      Films That Affected You
      Jul 12, 2010 04:33:57 pm
Films that have really touched you emotionally.

      Films that have shocked you.

Films that have sent a chill through your spine.

Films that you've cried to due to your feelings for the character.

Films that you've been either extremely happy or angry at, i.e. injustice/justice.

Films that you've sat in silence for a long period after viewing.

      You get the picture.

There's nothing wrong with a good 'take your brain out' nothing film now and then but these generally are the types of film that I like to watch most when I get the chance to. Hopefully I'll discover some things here.

The first film that came to my mind was 'The Machinist'. A gripping story-line with a very clever ending. Christian Bale is fantastic in that film.

      Quadrophenia.

Was the film that made me fall in love with the 60s music, fashion and generally the lifestyle. First watched it when I was abut 8.

      Stand By Me.

Probably touched me in a sense that it made me appreciate the close mates I had as a young lad.

I've just realised it could be quite hard to post in this thread without giving away spoilers. Maybe if you put the word 'spoiler' in bold before going on to say something.

Another one is American History X. A shocking depiction of how far you can go with your beliefs if you are force fed enough. It's actually sickening how misled some people are with their attitudes regarding race.

      Spoiler

The transformation in Ed Norton's character was really enlightening - provided a lot of hope. Then suddenly, you're hit with the ending. You're left thinking that maybe nothing got better, after all.

Schindler's List left a shiver down my spine and a terribly sad one to watch as well. At the end of the film I was left marvelling at it's brilliance for a long time after!

Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes - all superb especially Kingsley's performance of Itzhak Stern which gave the film sensitivity and warmth in amongst sheer brutality.

Agree about Schindler's List. My dad said that he went to see it in the cinema when it first came out. After it had finished, the whole audience got up slowly and walked out in absolute silence. He said he's never seen anything like it.

I never released how many big films Ralph Fiennes is in actually!

In all honesty I think it's the only film I've seen where he's in it....oh and Wallace and Gromit!

      Yes, and yes.

Would have to say Saving Private Ryan as well. A fictional story, but the beach landing and horrors of war make you realise you are lucky to be born here and now. What those men, and many others did, they cannot be thanked enough.

I had the same reaction for Saving Private Ryan. Sounds stupid, but everyone looked like a bomb had just gone off afterward. I was walking like a robot, on autopilot.

For pure magical emotion, The Green Mile. I cried like a baby! :lmao:

I must admit I cried watching that movie. It's that beautiful.

      Trailer - Cinema Paradiso

And I had another completely different reaction with this one, but still very strong:

      Straw Dogs (1971) - Trailer

It's shocking and disturbing. Loved it.

I've never seen The Green Mile. I thought it was a war film until now.

Just been looking briefly at the plot. Sounds really interesting. I think we may have it on DVD somewhere. If so, I'm going to watch it.

Another film that made me cry was Finding Neverland. I loved Peter Pan stories when I was a child and this is such a good film.

I've searched the films mentioned so far on IMDB and through reading the discussion boards they have led me onto other film pages.

Man, there are some weird sounding films out there.

Has anybody seen A Clockwork Orange?

That was a film that I wanted to watch for years and when I finaly got round to seeing it I was a bit disappointed tbh.

I've always meant to watch it again before passing judgment but, never got round to it.

I guess you probably got to A Clockwork Orange by reading about Straw Dogs? If I'm not mistaken they're both from the same year and both have a lot of violence (extremely controversial until today). A worse film than both ended up winning the Oscar that year, called The French Connection (still worth a watch, Gene Hackman is bloody brilliant!), but Straw Dogs and A Clockwork Orange are both much more historically relevant looking into perspective.

Love it or hate it, I think A Clockwork Orange is a must see for anyone who love cinema. I personally like it, it's weird but esthetically unique, and presents a completely different way to talk about important subjects such as violence, gangs, psychiatry etc then a regular film.

Liking this thread already - learning something already!

Another one is The Butterfly Effect. Extremely clever and original film. Watching it the first time I was nearly as frustrated as the character in it. Really digs deep into your mind, that one.

The movies that tend to affect me most are usually realistic drama type movies. Movies like Hotel Rwanda, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Pianist, The Lives of Others, and Requiem for a Dream.

Though I do also love The Machinist , American History X, Finding Neverland and The Green Mile.
