New York Yankees Owner...George Steinbrenner Dead!!!

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner...Died this morning of a heart attack.  He was 80.

For Yankee fans and baseball fans this is a big loss.  He was a controversial owner when he originally took over and purchased the Yankees. However he resurrected the franchise and turned them into one of the biggest sports franchises in the world. 11 Pennants and 7 World Series.  He bought the Yankees for $8 Million and its now worth over $1 Billion US.

This also follows the death of Bob Sheppard. The Yankee announcer since 1951. Who was good friends with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and was lucky enough to watch the 27' Yankees and "Murderers Row"..He called every Yankees game from 1951-2006...What a life!

Bad week for all of us Yankee fans.

Yeah it was. The character of Steinbrenner on Seinfeld was not far off.  Steinbrenner was a sociopath for the first15 years or so he owned the team. He fired 15+ plus managers in 15 years. He just got too involved yelled at players and made it a bad team to play for. They couldn't get players to sign for the club and the Yankees had a long run of sh*t seasons.

Then he got suspended by Major League Baseball in 1988 I think. He was supposed to sell the team and was almost banned completely. But baseball reinstated him and after that he cooled down. He allowed his GM and coaches to run the team and he won 5 more World Series.
He was really hated in New York for a long time. Then when he cooled down and fixed the Yankees and did good things, he was forgiven and was loved.  Sad loss, no one like him, one of a kind.

Saw something on ESPN this morning before i left for work , sounds like he was difficult man to work for , but certaintly he was a character .

Only knew of this bloke through Seinfeld, his and George's interaction were legendary.

RIP to both George and Bob. The reason im a Yankees fan would be Georges doing without a doubt. He reinstated the Yankees juggernaut and would be the reason my mum was able to buy Yankees merchandise in Australia for me, just cos she thought it looked nice.

Thanks for the memories, lets win number 28 for them.

As much as I disliked him, he was good for baseball.
