Nice interview from Peter so thought it about time he had his own player thread.

      Gulacsi eyes number one spot
24th Jul 2010 - Media Watch  Liverpool Echo

The life of a reserve team goalkeeper can often be thankless and there is no role within a modern squad that requires more patience.

Though Liverpool are blessed to have someone as talented and reliable as Pepe Reina as their number one, you cannot help but have a great deal of sympathy for the men who must play second fiddle to him week after week.

Take Diego Cavalieri. Since arriving from Palmeiras in the summer of 2008, he has made just eight appearances for the Reds but has yet to sample any action in the Premier League - no wonder, then, he is contemplating finding pastures new this summer. But for Peter Gulacsi the situation is quite different. Whereas Cavalieri will be 28 later this year, the giant Hungarian has only just turned 20 and is more than happy to receive an education from the shadows at the moment.

Don't, however, mistake that for a lack of ambition. Listening to Gulacsi speak after another intensive training session in Bad Ragaz this week, it is clear he is desperate to one day succeed Reina between the posts.

So while Reina has been relaxing after helping Spain win the World Cup, Gulacsi has been pushing himself to the limit in an attempt to show Roy Hodgson he is capable of making an impression in the here and now, as well as the future.

He certainly did nothing wrong when playing the second 45 minutes of Wednesday's friendly with FC Grasshopper, showing confidence and authority; in all likelihood, he will get another chance when the Reds lock horns with German side Kaiserslautern this afternoon.

"Spending any time with the first team is a great opportunity for us to show what we are capable of, especially with the first team players being away," said Gulacsi. "We have a chance to show that maybe we can play for the first team.

"Pre-season is really good because you might get a game here or there to try and impress the manager as during the season, when the team is playing important, competitive games, it is much more difficult for younger players. Now is the time to do it. I have to understand I am at the beginning of a long journey. Goalkeepers get better with age and experience, playing games and time. Sometimes it is difficult to be patient but you have to understand that everyone wants to play and show that you are good enough.

"But I understand my position. If I get any kind of chance - one minute, five minutes, a full game - I want to show what I can do and prove that I deserve to be at Liverpool because this is a real top level club."

A point proven by the fact Reina is the man in possession of the gloves; his enduring consistency, approach and passion for the club have made him a hugely popular figure with supporters and Gulacsi makes no secret of the esteem in which he holds the Spaniard.

"Even when you watch Pepe in training it is such a big help," he said. "You pick up things and you try to copy what he does. As a goalkeeper, for me he is the most complete in the world - shot stopping, distribution, covering the team; every part of the game he is top class.

"You can find really good goalkeepers all around the world like (Iker) Casillas, who is in front of Pepe in the Spanish squad. Is it a surprise he doesn't play so much? It is a difficult situation; Casillas plays in Spain and is in front of the coach every week.

"He is also playing for Real Madrid and he is number one for them; in some ways, it is difficult to beat that. It is a difficult situation for Pepe but, as far as I am concerned, he is the most complete and I'm lucky to work with him."

If Cavalieri happens to remain on Merseyside, the chances are Gulacsi will head out on loan at some point, as he did with great success last season; he kept two clean sheets in five games at the end of the campaign to help Tranmere Rovers retain their place in League One.

"It was a great experience to taste senior football again," Gulacsi, who has also had a spell on loan at Hereford, reflected. "We stayed in the league; it wasn't the right time to try things because we were under great pressure. I had to make sure I stayed safe and gave good support to the team.

"Of course I wanted to show what I could do but the main thing was to play simple and safe. Now I am back here and I have to keep doing well in training. You have got to give 100% and show you are good enough. Then it is up to the manager who will play."

Born in Budapest, Gulacsi followed compatriots Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon to Anfield on loan in 2007 before signing a permanent deal 12 months later; he showed why the Reds were keen to land him last year when helping Hungary reach the last four of the Under-20 World Cup.

There were suggestions Chelsea were trying to spirit him away after that tournament - he had starred in a last 16 penalty shoot-out win over the Czech Republic - but leaving was never an option and Gulacsi is adamant he is at the right club to continue his development.

"I sometimes think about where I was before I came here," he said. "I was second choice in my age group in Hungary but now I am playing for the Under-21s and I have been on the bench three times for the national team.

"I have also been on the bench five times for Liverpool. That proves that I am at the right place. I think I have improved a lot and become a much better goalkeeper. I'm really happy here. I like the people, the city, the mood. This could be an encouraging season."

I would have no problem selling Cavlieri and having Gulacsi as back up! I think it would benefit gulacsi alot more aswell!!

I have massive wraps on him. I reckon for his age, he is potentially a top class keeper in the future. Brilliant reflexes and shot stopping, he can only get better and has Pepe to learn from.

I hope he makes it, he seems a great player and fella.

Peter Gulacsi has lifted the lid on the competitions that take place on a daily basis at Melwood between Liverpool's goalkeepers.

Gulacsi insists there is a sense of camaraderie between the four custodians at the club's training complex, with the Hungarian working alongside Brad Jones and Martin Hansen in addition to first choice Pepe Reina.

However, a degree of competitiveness also exists as the trio try and stake their first-team credentials alongside Anfield's number one stopper.

Gulacsi told LFC Weekly: "First of all we are good friends. I think it's important to have that unity

"But between ourselves we have serious competitions. We count who's let in the most goals in training. And whoever does gets a punishment.

"Sometimes he will have to go around collecting all the balls after the session or something similar. It's all fun, but there is a serious part too. We all want to win. Even in training, the feeling of winning is still great. It also makes all of us more competitive and better. It helps you to focus and we all benefit from it."

Given Reina's status as one of the world's finest goalkeepers, is it fair to assume he's the favourite when these contests take place?

      Not so, according to Gulacsi.

"Of course he does well. But he doesn't win all of the time," he says. "Probably the best feeling is beating him and we all try to do it. Now and again I win, or Brad, or Martin. It's not the case that he wins on every occasion."

Gulacsi added: "Pepe gives us advice, but doesn't talk too much. He doesn't want to be like a father who is always telling us what to do. Instead he will just mention an area where we can improve.

"As well as listening to him I always try to look at how he works and how he prepares. I try to copy his game all of the time."

Though he's yet to figure in a competitive game for Liverpool, Gulacsi has been named on the bench by Kenny Dalglish for every Liverpool game since early January.

The 20-year-old also spent time on loan at Tranmere Rovers earlier in the campaign.

"I've been involved in the squad quite a lot recently," he reflects. "But I would never say 'I'm second choice'. I just try to do my best and stay in contention for as long as possible.

"It makes me proud when I'm included. It's a big experience and an achievement too. I just try to be ready and be as good as I can.

"I want to show people that I deserve to be in the squad. I want to earn the trust and show that if I'm needed to play I am able to."

Good that he's overtaken Jones recently, I rate him.

Lets be honest, hes 20. If he was of top standard he'd be first team somewhere across Europe. He may well develop over the years but he'd need to be playing regularly. We arent a club who can afford to give time for young keepers to develop there game

Look at how Mihaylov is getting on at Twente. Doing a good job there so who knows, maybe he could turn out the same.

IF Reina did leave, I would rather spend the money elsewhere. I believe he has got what it takes. But then we won't find out until he is given some games.

Yeah I said keepers dont develop till later but we cant afford him that time. If he was of the highest class of keeper he wouldnt be a 2nd or 3rd choice some decent club would have him as first choice

He is going to be a very good goalie, and should be our future #1 after Pepe.

Hope he gets brought on by a Premier League team for the season and shows how good he can be.

Who has been the reserve goalkeeper this season? Pretty sure it has not been Gulasci...

Belford I think.  Peter's on loan at Hull.

Commentator said last night he hasn't played since December, not sure how accurate that is.

They've a few reserve keepers on loan there, they have that Vito Mannone lad from Arsenal too.

Think I read somewhere last night that you are not allowed to recall season long loans.

Belford or Ward will most likely be on the bench.
Sure you never need a keeper sub anyway...

Looks like we're recalling Gulasci after all! :)

      Liverpool recall Gulasci
Linkedy link to the Hull website

Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi is set to be recalled from his loan spell with the Tigers by parent club Liverpool.

The Hungarian stopper will return to Anfield later today with goalkeeping options currently thin on the ground at the Merseyside club.

With first choice keeper Pepe Reina suspended and back-up Alexander Doni sent off against Blackburn on Tuesday night, third choice goalkeeper Brad Jones is left as their only experienced cover.

It all means that Gulacsi is likely to be part of the Liverpool squad that travels down to Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final against Everton at the weekend.

Gulacsi made 15 appearances for the Tigers after joining on loan last summer and the club would like to thank him for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

Reading reports that Peter has moved to Red Bull Salzburg. Shame really, always rated him and actually thought he was better than Jones.

      Good luck, Peter.

Peter Gulacsi – Red Bull Salzburg’s first new signing

23-yead-old Hungarian signs contract with the Red Bulls running until 2017 and becomes candidate for number 1.

The first new signing for next season has been unveiled as Peter Gulacsi. The 23-year-old joins from Liverpool to sign a four-year contract with FC Red Bull Salzburg.

The former Hungarian under-21 stands at 1.92 metres tall and was able to impress during a trial in Salzburg in the spring. He is looking forward to his new challenge, saying: “I am pleased that as of now I will be able to play for an Austrian top club. My goal is to compete to be the club’s number 1 and be successful with FC Red Bull Salzburg both domestically and in Europe.”

Sporting director Ralf Rangnick said on the new signing: “We have signed a goalkeeper in Peter Gulacsi that will further improve our quality. He was here for a three-day trial where we watched him very closely and put him through his paces physically. We are convinced that he has great potential.”

All the best to Peter. Looked a real prospect when he first came to the Academy, but we never really got to see him play.

Best of luck to him. Good player but he had one of the best ahead of him. I am sure he will do well in Austria. Bit closer to home as well.

      Good luck Peter!
