Aston Villa's Luke Young poised for Liverpool move

Young has not travelled with Villa on their pre-season tour
Aston Villa defender Luke Young is on the verge of joining Liverpool, according to the player's agent.

Young's representative, Andy Evans, said the two clubs had agreed a fee and were discussing personal terms for the 31-year-old former England right-back.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill stated on Tuesday that an offer had been made by an unnamed club.

Liverpool would not confirm the bid, although Young has not travelled to Portugal for Villa's pre-season tour.

The full-back was made available for transfer in May and is believed to have been coveted by Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson when he was at Fulham during the 2009-10 season.

"There has been an offer from a football club which Luke is mulling over," O'Neill said.

Young joined Villa in summer 2008 from Middlesbrough in a £5m move and became a key performer in his first season at Villa Park.

Last season he suffered early injury problems and was later given compassionate leave after the death of his brother, with Carlos Cuellar cementing his position at right-back.

Liverpool have been weakened at the full-back position by the departure of Fabio Aurelio on a free transfer. The Reds have also released Switzerland international Philipp Degen.

Another full-back, Emiliano Insua, is still waiting to hear if a £5m move to Italian club Fiorentina will go through.

      I don't get it though.

Are we buying a right-back to play at left-back or is Young supposed to be back-up to Johnson?

I would assume we are buying him for both positions, incase Johnson gets injured and incase we cant sign anyone for left back

I think both, his versatility should come in handy. I still don't think he will be a first choice back, just a good bench guy.

Oh for fucks sake people! He's a improvement on bloody Philip Degan yet when Rafa signed him there wasn't this amount of kidding around. He had a very good run of form for Aston Villa filling in for Bouma and is a fantastic person to have in reserve in case of Johnson getting injured. Also remember Insua didn't have a good season last year but Young had a better one.

Never been a fan of this fella.

Hopefully he's a backup for a fully fit and never injured first choice left back.

My dad said Young was singing from Villa, I got excited and then realised it's not the Ashley one :\

The headline on BBC text got me too. Was thinking it was Ashley til I saw the fee involved. :(

In my opinion he is a better defender than Insua, Aurelio, Dossena or Riise. I think for the fee we are stated as paying and for a player of such experience, I think its an excellent bit of shrewd business.
He will be a good and solid starter or bench warmer.
And another englishmen...all in all, once again Roy has delivered.

If he has been bought as a first eleven player it is a disgrace, if he is being bought to play left back I'm baffled and angry the lad is brutal at left back, he is fairly average at right back never mind left back.

If he is being bought for right back why exactly I want Kelly to be Johnson understudy and if he is injured Carragher can play there.

I'm absoluted baffled that we can afford to play £2 million on a Villa understudy. Would be a very poor signing and I wouldn't be impressed if this is one of Hodgson targets. A joke of a signing.

Where is he being bought for Ross, ya he has played left back not to well though, surely he isn't being bought for right back. A complete waste of money. This is exactly the type of signing that deflates fans along with Muntari I would be truly F***ing disgusted.

Exactly. How can some people have the cheek to criticise him when Insua had a shocker last season?

All I can say is hopefully he's backup, and to be honest he's okay backup due to his versatility. We did need more than one left back didn't we? Maybe Roy's got a first choice waiting to sign as well....

He fills the English quota too.

I hope he's just for the ressies, because if he takes that back up RB spot off Kelly I'll be kicking a few cats.

I'm all for Luke Young as a backup to the defence as he's versatile but you've seriously got to start asking questions about him for even pondering whether to move to Liverpool or not.
