      Shaun Wright Philips (Manchester City)
      Aug 08, 2010 05:05:56 am
Liverpool are winning their battle with Arsenal for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The England winger has been told he can leave Manchester City for about £7million. But Arsenal are unwilling to pay him more than the £65,000 a week he earns at City.

That has opened the door for Roy Hodgson to beat Arsene Wenger again after the Liverpool boss persuaded Joe Cole to move to Anfield ahead of the Emirates.

Wright-Phillips turned down City’s offer of a £10,000-a-week wage hike at the end of last season.

Roberto Mancini preferred Adam Johnson and Craig Bellamy on the flanks late last season and will add Aston Villa’s James Milner to his squad this week after also signing David Silva from Valencia.

No no no no no no no no no no no no. Winning the battle. Has been a failure at every club he has gone to. We have Jovanovic, Maxi, Kuyt, Pacheco, Amoo. If we need to go further we have Sterling and Silva. We do not need this player. Waste of money when the players we have at our disposal are taken into consideration

This just goes to show the damage the 8 man english rule is doing. Inflating the interest and therefore prices of sh*te players, meaning yet again, the cheaper foreign players look even more of a bargain.

No for me as well. Poor end product, would get right on my nerves.

I would rather count some of our under 21s in the squad than bringing in mediocre players because they are Homegrown

I'd back this 100%! Offload Ryan and bring in a genuine talent in Elia who could help set the league alight. I am sure Ryan would be happy returning to Holland anyway.

As for SWP, have to agree he is yet another over-rated player who gains additional pull due to the impending regulations regarding 'home grown' players. Much in the same respect as Aaron Lennon in my opinion, not the best football player but gets by on his pace. It seems that we would have to spend a lot of what is no doubt a limited budget on him when Dirk, Maxi, Joe, Milan and so on would do better.

Shaun Wright-Phillips is a good talent, but I think we have enough similar attacking players. We don't need him. If to boost our attack I think getting another striker is more important than another winger/attacking midfielder.

SWP is older than Joe Cole and has never had a consistent end product/cross.  Chelsea ruined him, like it has a few players.  Maybe he needs to go to a team where he's automatic first choice for a change.

I hate that being said, it's so lazy, there are so many reasons, doesn't get on with the manager, doesn't fit in the system, wants to leave for a new challenge.

Even if that isn't true with him, working under Roy, may improve his confidence and consistency in which case he would be a great buy for us.

Rather than waste money on SWP I would look to utilise what we already have. Maxi would start on the right for me. babel can also play out there ( Roy needs to work with babel as he is talented ) as could Johnson even. We also have Amoo and young players like him have to be brought on. If we have money to spend, spend it on a striker were we are really lacking.

So it is a no for me!

Didn't say I wanted him, bar him being consistently good. I just don't like the excuse being, why should we buy a player Man City don't want anymore. Bet that person didn't say the same about Joe Cole, say what you like about money, if Chelsea wanted him they would of kept him.

Chelsea wanted to keep him. But they could not because his contract ran out! So we signed a player that they were desperate to keep. Even better we got 6m out of them as well for Beneyoun. All you hear from chavski now is sour grapes!

If Chelsea wanted to keep him that badly they'd of offered hima  contract he wanted, they obviously weren't too bothered he was going. Probably until he signed for us, they probably thought he'd sign for another London club, and besides Arsenal they didn't see any other London club as a threat.

We have plenty of players that would keep him out of the team. I wouldn't say he was sh*te, but he's no better than anyone we already have.

No end product, plus we have Maxi so what's the point. I'd also rather give Amoo a few games, he looks like he can skin heads that lad. I just hope Kuyt isn't preferred over Maxi, it would piss me off to watch another season of Kuyt on the wing!

Chelsea tried for over a year to tie him to a new deal. Money was not the problem. Cole wanted to move on. So as desperate as they were to keep him, he was as desperate to leave, which turns out to be a good thing for him, us and a bad thing for the chavs

Anyways, this is a SWP thread. I do not want him.

agree totally with what you have said. I am really interested  to see how ryan babel does this year. a new manager and a new start for him, he could be like a new signing, hes got the talent, he just needs to show what he can do. 2 seasons ago Andy the Gay Blue Gray said that ryan abel was a player to watch for the future and I still believe that he has all the attributes to be a top class player, he has power, pace and a good shooting ability as was demonstrated against lyon last year. His attitude has improved immensely. I was not the biggest Roy Hodgson fan to say the least but he now has my ful backing as Liverpool coach and I believe he can re-ignite Babels flame so that he shows all the Liverpool faqns what they have missed over the past couple of years. We are gonna win the premiership finally this year, YNWA

his brother Bradley Wright Phillips walked past me with a right attitude during TruroFC and Plymouth Argyle (I live in cornwall now).

Watched the match and both the Wright Phillips brothers have got something in common, they are sh*t. Then again Peter Reid managers argyle so that's no suprise.

I shouted "peter reid" good luck next season lad, you'll need it" had me liverpool shirt on just to rub his nose in it.

He's not from Ajax, he plays at HSV, and he's only 2 months younger or something, he is alot better though, I'll agree with that.

Ajax are going to lose alot of there players, Wiel, Sketenberg GK, Suarez, Elia.. if they go they are fooked.
That's what you'd expect after this world cup but it doesn't look like Stekelenburg and van der Wiel are going anywhere at the moment, Suarez, maybe. And like I said, although Elia has played a few years in Ajax's youth, he's never been part of their first team and doesn't currently play there.

I'm seriously getting worried here, first Charlton Cole now SWP....I was just getting optimistic thinking Roy was going to this right, starting from scratch bring in some of the youth team, blood them carefully and take one step at a time and build a team with youth and hunger and determination...But then i get up and read this..Look SWP is absolutely useless,at Chelsea he was just a bit part player so he goes back to City and he's even worse,he can't even cross it so what use is he,we'll get 3 goals from him if we are lucky....Don't get desperate Roy,invest in youth.

I remember almost exactly 6 years ago him making his debut for England in a friendly against Ukraine (3-0 the score was and as St James's Park...how do I remember it?!) and he scored a very very good goal and I thought this guy could go places. In all honesty looking back he hasn't improved one bit which is quite a shame and his crossing is still a disgrace. It's no disaster if he comes since he does have a bit of pace and can put in the odd performance time and again. I'd only buy him as an impact sub late on in then game if we're needing a goal.

He's garbage, might just sneek into Blackpools side, doubt their that desperate either. If it wasn't for his old man he'd be languishing in the lower leagues, totally over rated.

I'd say yes lets sign him if we wanted a winger that likes to run in circles and not get a ball in the box the whole game.
But fortunately we don't (hopefully) so I'd much prefer someone like Elia or even Ashley Young, I know he didn't have a brilliant season last campaign, but I really do think Young could do the business for us.

Dont think so, I dont mind the lad but we already have enough frustrating players who have the ability but un-willing to show it, not mentioning any names Babel.

I think he would be a good signing and I am slightly suprised by the general reaction him joining us is getting on here. He is a skillful player with pace and direct running. Arguably similar to Babel but I for one would like pacey alternatives to Kuyt and Maxi on our right side.

By no means is this a position we are in desperate need of strengthening and I certainly don't think SWP is the exceptional. But a good player with proven experience in the Premier League.

In summary, we could do a lot worse in my humble opinion

Why exactly are we being linked to him, right midfield is not a position we are weak.

Kuyt, Cole, Babel Maxi and Jovanovic can all play so why would we buy this lad.

No F***ing way, one of the worst players ever, can't get into citys team yet still plays for Capello-bizarre, another head down runs up his own ass type of player, another one of city's reject mercenaries. Average with a capital A. sh*te with a capital S. We should be shopping at the top table not picking up scraps from the soup kitchen.

Okay, I'll buck the trend here: yes. Pacy and can beat a man and get behind defences, which is something we do not have from our current wide midfielders.  Yes, I'd prefer Turan and Mata, but I think SWP would improve our team/squad.  Unpopular view apparently, but there you go.

I'll agrre with pacy, beat a man & get behind a defence, but his end product is far too often weak or non-existant.
