Mate I've been reading Pratchett for 20 years. They are quite simply the funniest books i've ever read, I've never read another author who can make me laugh like Pratchett (it drives the mrs crazy). The early books are a bit heavy going and to be honest, you need not read them all, particularly the first 2 Rincewind books. My favourites are the books starring the guards (there are 5-6 of these at least) and would suggest you read "Guards, Guards, Guards" which is the first of the series. If you want any other suggestions on Pratchett give me a shout, he's my favourite author by far.

I've wanted to read his books for a while. I'm a big Douglas Adams fan and a friend of mine compared him to Pratchett, but I just couldn't find his initial books to buy here in Brazil, and I'm a bit neurotic about reading orders... I couldn't just read a random book, I need to begin from the beginning :D

Now I have a kindle though, so I can get all of them pretty easily. Will probably do so in the near future.

Been told, with Pratchett, that the best/proper reading order isn't necessarily the published order with the Discworld books.  Worth picking up Dark Omens before you start as well, which reminds me, I need a new copy, mine is in tatters.

Started the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell. Great way to continue in the same topic as the ObrienĀ“s Aubrey Maturin saga.
If anyone is into historic novels, and likes the Napoleonic wars, it seems to be a good option. More action packed than the Obrien books, but not as well written. Still, very acuratte, and if you read the Naval books, this will give you the other side of the war (Infantry)

Has anybody read The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky? Got it on my Nook but not sure whether to go with it.
Thick Book, hard to read, but fantastic points. Personally, i didnt like it as a whole, just bits here and there. DOnt get me wrong, i like a good intelectuall debate, but that was too much. I guess all of the guys books are pretty much like that, but this one was the one that made me decide never to read anything by him again.

Its a book for "intellectuals"....if you know what i mean. People who have higher understanding of things (and people who think they do will read it, wont understand a thing, and discuss it till boredom)

Bottom line, its a good book if you have the stomach for that kind of reading. Clearly, i dont

      Hope that helps

Yep! Dark Omens was my first ever Pratchett book, I read it when i was 17 as was a big Neil Gaiman fab from being into comics (I think he had just written Black Orchid and was also writing Grendel a the time). My Pratchett love went from there.

I would always recomend starting with Guards, guards, guards to anyone who hasn't read discworld before. I also love the 'Wee Free Men / Tiffany Aching" series which have me in absolutel hysterics.

Been a while since it came out but I've just finished Stevie's autobiography, and it was a brilliant read I have to say, really really enjoyed it.

Can anybody recommend any other Liverpool players past and present that have an autobiography similar to Gerrard's? It's in first person point of view, it feels as though I was sitting with Gerrard and he's telling me his life story  really engaging read!

Robbie Fowlers is brilliant, I loved reading that. Pele also has a rather interesting one that is written in 1st person. Outside of football, I'd probably recommend Joe Calzaghe, always been one of my favourite boxers and he is an interesting character, him and his Dad Enzo have a fascinating relationship.

I've been meaning to read Gow's book "The Hunter Inside" since its publication but I had so many books on my to-read list, I finally decided to ignore some of them and jump to Gow's work as I'm very curious about it. Read the 1st chapter earlier this morning and it surely made me want to continue to read.

Just reading my latest Kindle purchase,  Bill Shankly -- The Hard Road Back
It started life as a 14 week series published in 'the Pink' after Liverpool had returned to the first division at the start of the 60's written in his own words all of which were before they started to fill the trophy cabinate !
Now in Kindle book form, It really is fascinating to read the words of the Messiah !

I've been reading the original James Bond novels by Ian Fleming. I've already brushed off "Casino Royale" and "Live and Let Die," and am about 40 percent through with "Moonraker." I've read a few of them before, but want to read the whole series in order.

They're really good books! Obviously a bit dated since they were written in the 50s, but they're enjoyable reads. Fleming was a pretty good writer. As you can imagine, the movies have taken SEVERAL liberties with the stories haha

Read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher not long ago and was pleasantly surprised. It's about a girl that looks back on her reasons to commit suicide. And 13 individuals in particular that each receive a set of tapes with the now dead girls stories of them all.

Reading Born To Run by Christopher McDougall, great insight into the physics and mental attitude involved in running. Also perfect incentive to dust off those trainers for another blast  :)

Currently reading Mort, one of the Discworld books.  Love Pratchett's warped thinking.

Been meaning to jump into Discworld for soooo long. Are they a continuing series? Do you have to start at book 1 etc? Cheers  :)

Only one I've read is Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks, not really my kind of thing but was surprisingly good. Not sure if that was Faulks writing will have to try one of the Fleming novels, what's been the best so far?

Too be honest, it's probably not best to start with the first 2-3 books.  I'd probably start with Guards! Guards!, though before you start Discworld novels, I recommend reading The Bromeliad Trilogy, although ostensibly a kids book, it gives you an insight into Pratchett's writing style.  Their probably is a recommended reading order, but I'm not sure what it is.

Ok, thanks for the heads up, think I'd better finish a few of my half-reads before I tackle that lot  :o. Pratchett's writing style often gets quoted as 'different' thanks for the advice on the Bromeliad Trilogy.

I really liked "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." But my favorite Bond film that was based on a book is "From Russia With Love," so I'll let you know once I get to that one!

Just started reading 'The Story of The Streets by Mike Skinner'. I was never a huge fan of The Streets but I found their music, and Skinner himself, quite intriguing.
