Why? Because they hated the idea of rivals AEK Athens playing as the home team at their stadium so much, that they trashed their own stadium…
AEK failed to bring their Olympic Stadium to UEFA Europa League standards and so had to find a local alternative. Panionios said they can use theirs, much to the dismay of their fans who decided to trash their own stadium and rip up their own pitch. So AEK had to then find yet another location to play their Europa League match with Dundee United, according to the Daily Mail there was 6 location changes!
Eventually they settled for Olympiakos’ home ground and thanks to the tear up, no AEK fans can come in to watch the game, in case Olympiakos fans come in and rip up their stadium too.
