I remember a quote from some Serie A player (off the record) who said in Italy an team pays off the ref to make sure the game is fair, because you know the other team will. A paradox maybe but it goes along with the perception of Italian culture that mirrors the saying, "an italian doesn't care if the glass is half full or half empty, they want to know if it contains poison." I love Tardelli thought on players now and then, he certainly loves Maradona.

there's a book called calcio by David Foot about Italian football which is well worth reading, it's a few years old but certainly gives a lot of context and background.

I'm gonna get it, thanks. I was speaking to an Italian guy who was mad on football and wanted to play at some level but did his knee. He said training in Italy even from a very young age is tactically driven. Lots of routines about positioning etc

One thing I hate about Serie A clubs is the way in which they go about their business with loan deals. When they're loaning a player from another club and there is an agreed fee at the end of it, they do all they can to get out of paying it or try their best to reduce it. If, on the other hand, they loan a player out to another club then they try and force them to pay the fee and offload the player. Clubs in our league need to wise up to it and stop adding these daft clauses. A prime example courtesy of Sky Sports Transfer Centre:

      SUNDERLAND STUCK WITH ALVAREZ?

Here’s an interesting line from the Sunderland Echo, who are reporting that Sunderland will have to sign Ricky Alvarez on a permanent deal from Inter Milan.

Alvarez arrived from Inter on a season-long loan last summer with a clause for Sunderland to sign him permanently if they were able to remain in the Premier League.

However, he is now facing surgery on the knee injury which limited him to just five league starts and Sunderland think there is a legal avenue in the loan contract to pull out of the £7.5m deal.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio, though, thinks otherwise: “It’s very simple, there are no concerns on our part,” he told the Italian press. “We made an agreement, a transfer with Sunderland. For us, he is absolutely a Sunderland player.”

I can see both sides of the coin on this one. Sunderland technically did stay up with Alvarez in the squad, however, he barely ever played so it's not as though that player contributed to them staying up.

Vidal's punishment for the crash he caused through drink driving:

      - Driver's license suspended for two years
      - Pay compensation to victim
      - Give two motivational speeches to inmates
      - Donate 100 football shirts, balls, shin pads and socks to inmates
      - Donate a signed Copa America final shirt to Buin fire station

Why the F**k should inmates get footballs, kits and shin pads?! Basically, if you go to prison you get rewarded. The world's gone mad!

The names of those who died at Superga ?

Later edit : The shape of the striking bull consists of the names of important players in the rich history of Torino, including the stars of the famous Grande Torino team, who won five titles in a row.

Juve seem to have fallen off a cliff face this season, bit odd considering their squad quality and depth.
Surely the loss of a great like Pirlo doesn't give the whole story.

Napoli just beat Inter by 2-1 in what was a great game of football. Pepe Reina made an incredible save in the final seconds of the match and celebrate as if he had won the World Cup! Very nice to watch. I miss Pepe!

Napoli are now top of the league! Hope they go on to win it.
