Liverpool FC board scrambled to try and take down owners
22 September 2010
Yesterday I updated our members about some activity relating to certain members of the Liverpool FC board, who had headed to America for urgent talks with whom I believe to be a potential buyer of the club.
If you are a member, you can read that article here, if you are not a member you can support craptalk by becoming one here.
Liverpool officials head overseas
Liverpool officials were scrambled because the potential buyer seemed to be developing cold feet about a possible takeover because they had become concerned at the actions of supporters groups following news of the planned 'Direct Action - Sunderland and Blackpool' protests that have been organised by Spirit of Shankly, along with other recent campaigns by them, other groups and individuals.
SOS and individual supporters scored a huge result this week when scaring off private equity firm Blackstone. From what we're told, potential backers are fleeing from Tom Hicks because of the various emails, calls, faxes and letters that they have received. This should be applauded.
However, while this was a huge plus, one potential buyer apparently sees this as extremely worrying. They fear that they will be vilified if they were to do something wrong as the new owners of the club.
Fan protests have certainly helped keep the fight up against the current owners but there are suggestions from within the board room that they could also scupper a takeover going through. It's certainly a hard one to balance, as on one hand we need to protest to scare off those who may be prepared to back the current owners but on the other hand, is it also damaging in terms of attracting new owners?
Following my update yesterday, Tom Hicks and his son Tommy were snapped outside a bank in New York. It was then suggested by a couple of our members that maybe the board had flown to meet Hicks to assist in refinancing. This is definitely not the case. I was told prior that the trip had absolutely nothing to do with assisting Hicks to refinance and I documented this in my update well before the snaps appeared.
When the snaps of Hicks appeared I was fuming because I was in New York myself only a few days ago. Had I seen those pics, the minute they appeared, I'd have been in a cab armed with my camcorder and anything I could throw at the ****. It would have been the best YouTube video you'd ever have seen. So yes, I'm gutted that I missed out. What's more saddening though is the fact that someone just snapped the pics and left it at that and where the hell were our NY-based Liverpool fans? Seriously, I'd have been there in minutes. I immediately called my best friend who lives out there but he was five hours away by car. A chance missed.
I said in my update yesterday that the club was considering making some kind of statement before the weekend to try and calm fans. The board are desperate for any public protests and online drama to cease to try and not frighten off the interested party that they have flown to see. Today, the official Liverpool FC website publishes another '21 questions with Christian Purslow'. Was this what my source was talking about? It's highly possible because of the timing but I would urge you to monitor the official LFC website until the Sunderland and Blackpool protests by SOS have passed for anything else that could be deemed positive or a distraction.
Today I have been informed that at least Ian Ayre remains in America although that update came in overnight and I don't know which time zone my source was working to as I haven't had time to touch base yet. Phil Nash is in France on 'holiday'. I'm not sure where Christian Purslow or Martin Broughton are as I type this but if you email Christian, an autoresponder kicks in advising you that he's away.
