Hodgson eyes up Fanni as Johnson replacement

      http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Transfer-news-Liverpool-eye-up-Rod-Fanni-as-a-potential-replacement-for-Glen-Johnson-article629957.html

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is ready to move for French right-back Rod Fanni - as he looks to replace Glen Johnson.

Hodgson flew to watch the Rennes defender against Auxerre on Sunday and is poised to make a bargain offer of around £3 million in the New Year window.

Fanni, 29 next month, is one of the most respected right backs in his homeland and has won five caps for France.

He has been close to coming to the Premier League before when Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton tried for him.

Hodgson is in the market for an experienced defender and is frustrated by England right back Johnson’s injuries and average form since he took charge.

Johnson will be sold in the January market if a suitable offer comes in and Hodgson’s decision to look at potential replacements points towards a change in that department.

Hodgson and Johnson’s relationship has become fraught in recent days after the Kop boss called Johnson’s England credentials into question.

He said: “To be frank, he has not performed up to now to the level I would expect of him. You would have to ask him the question, “Do you think you are playing at top form and are you playing like the best right-back in the country for your club?” If he says yes, we will have to agree to differ. And if he says No, then you have to ask the question, why not?”

Johnson’s response was to label Hodgson’s tactics ‘boring”.

Fanni is a regular in the Rennes side but almost joined Atletico Madrid in the summer before the move fell through.

Hodgson has been playing Jamie Carragher and young Martin Kelly as cover for Johnson during his absence, but a sensible investment in a mature international would fit in with his plans.

Liverpool’s new owners would like to sign young talent for the future, but there are short-term measures also needed - and landing a player who could take over from Johnson and give them a profit would also tick boxes

Not so sure at 29 years of age, he'd fit in with Roy's transfer policy, however I doubt it would fit in with Nesv's or Commoli's

If he was something like 22 years of age, up and coming and starting to get International caps I'd probably say go on then.

      However... nah.

No thanks.  I don't want anyone that age coming in and pushing Kelly further down the pecking order.

What's the point in an Academy if we continually buy players at the end of their career.  That's really worked well with Insua and Konchesky.

Roy's mentality - stop gap replacements.

Having seen him play several times, I have to say he is a really good player (I'd say one of the two or three best of french ligue 1 for this position) who has the level to probably succeed in england.

Now he would be one more 29 year old player only going to decline, after (hopefully) one or two good seasons.

apparantly, before they failed in their bid to buy the club DIC wanted Fanni.

sorry, that really is the last one!

anyway, bit dubious about this. 29 and we have Johnson and Kelly.  Not really seeing the big picture here. What about a left back.

Maybe not.... With Carra and Agger out injured, and Wilson looking far from assured (but he still has plenty of time to get better) we are lacking in the CB dept.  Kelly is an option for that position, and will certainly offer us more pace than either Sotis or Skrtel.  Roy may be thinking that Fanni is a player who could add depth to the RB position which would allow Kelly to play in a more central role.

In short, Roy may be looking at Kelly as the next Carra.... a utility player who can be used anywhere across the back line.

I really don't think Roy is thinking about selling Johno.... If he was, we'd be seeing Kelly feature more now even though Glen is fit again.  I think if we buy Fanni it is because Roy is thinking about possibly selling Agger and using Kelly as a utility player who can cover at CB.  Let's not forget that Martin started off as a CB.  If this was to happen we'd have:

      RB:  Johno and Fanni
      LB:  Aurelio and Konch
CB:  Sotis, Skrtel, Carra, and Wilson
      * Kelly can play anywhere along the back line

I love Agger and think he's one of the best in the world when fit, but he rarely seems to be fit.  I think we receive offers in the 12 million range we should seriously consider them because the worst thing that could happen is if we hold onto him for years and he pulls a Johnny Woodgate/Owen Hargreaves.... We could also bring Ayala back from his loan to add depth at CB.

Sick of hearing that Kelly will be our future RB regardless of Johno's future.

Kelly is our future center back. End of.

I like how his name consists entirely of slang terms for genitals.

Yeah he could literally go F**k himself

      Is he better then Johnson?

At 29 is he a worthwhile signing? Granted 3 million isnt breaking the bank but what will we get out of him 1 maybe 2 good seasons?

He is not better than Johnson but not very far from his level.

His pace is impressive (for a 29yr old he's not showing any sign of losing his legs) as his reading of the game and you often never see the winger he mark getting a good ball for the whole match (now it's Ligue 1 wingers, not PL ones).

He is a reasonably good crosser and has a good passing range, but is a far less good dribbler and probably not as good finisher as Jonhson. His speed make him a good counter attacker anyway, but he often lose challenges if he recieve a ball while not running.

The main problem is : will he adapt to PL fast enough, considering he don't have that many seasons at his actual level left (especially being on the bench most of the time if he is purchased as number two RB).
