Former Luton midfielder David Preece has died at the age of 44 following a short illness.
Preece began his career with Walsall before moving on to Luton where he made 395 appearances and was part of the Hatters' 1988 League Cup winning team.
He also had spells at Derby, Swindon Birmingham, Cambridge and Torquay.
A statement on Luton's website said: "The chairman, directors, manager and everyone at Luton send their deepest sympathy to David's family."
Former Walsall team-mate Mick Kearns said on the Saddlers' website: "Of all the players I ever played with at Walsall, David was up there in terms of ability.
"Everybody connected with Walsall will be devastated by this news and our hearts and thoughts go out to his family at this terrible time."
44 years old is no age to go, especially when you have spent most of your life physically fit.
My thoughts go out to the family and friends of David Preece.
RIP mate.
