      Stewart Downing (Aston Villa)
      Jan 16, 2011 10:31:13 am
Liverpool are trying to tempt Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier to part with England winger Stewart Downing.

New Kop manager Kenny Dalglish believes Downing, 26, would give his side much-needed width and pace.

Dalglish's predecessor, Roy Hodgson, had also been eyeing Villa's Ashley Young, 25, but it's Downing who is on a shortlist of possible Kop signings during the transfer window.

Liverpool believe Downing would come cheaper than his Villa Park team-mate at around £10 million.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

      No thanks.

He would come cheaper than Young as he is nowhere near as good and way over rated in my opinion.

I'd much rather have N'Zogbia who would cost similar but is a much better player.

Not that bad but not really good.

10 millions seem a lot for him. I'd rather buy N'Zogbia, younger, faster, and estimated half this price.

Always thought he was good and had some talent behind him, but is very inconsistent, would prefer both young and N'Zog.

Used to be much better like about 3 years ago. Hasn't really been the same player ever since he left for Villa.

      I'd take Young instead.

I would like N'zogbia over Downing. N'zogbia has more pace, better crosses, better skill but has a poor attitude but is cheaper. Young is so overrated it's unreal.

10m is way too much. I actually admire Downing but he's not worth that.

The only players I would have from Aston Villa are Ashley Young and maybe those youngsters Albrighton and Clark, but haven't seen enough to fully judge them.

      So Ashley Young, please.

Maybe kennys thinking more about versatility for the team?
I see this guy as a similar to Riera type in style of football
Got a cracking cross on him i.m.o.
Now atm we have Babel (although possibly leaving?) Joe Cole, Jovanovic and Maxi to potentially play on the left
Babel and Jova are quick but don't have the best cross
Maxi and JC will cut in because of they're natural right footedness
Downing isn't slow and won't cut in because he's left footed but also has a better cross than all our current potential left wingers imo
Yes maybe Dani could play there, but he's more of a flair type...bascially like maxi and jc but just better prospect :P
So all the players have a use, just only aainst particular opposition depending on our method of attack/crossing etc.
And to be fair, Kenny won't be able to spend megabucks atm, so maybe the team might look a bit makeshift at times, but if its whats needed, then we have to trust the man and in all honesty this team doesn't look at all bad...if the rumours are true:
      Reina
      Kelly
      Skrtel
      Agger (when fit)
Coentreou (spelling)/Emmanuelson/Taiwo (please be him ;D)
      Raul Merieles
      Lucas
      Suarez
      Gerrard
      Downing
      Torres

Theres alot more attacking flair to that team than what we have now

Decent player but not worth £10m and I think we should be aiming at better players than Downing.

Brings more to the table than young IMO, I.e tackling back strength etc. Had a tough season coming back from injury but a player I like.

Not as bad as a lot on here are trying to imply and certainly a case can be made that he has been as effective, if not moreso, than Young this season.  One has 5 goals 3 assists, the other 3 goals & 5 assists.  And add on to that, Downing has been playing largely out of position on the right to accomodate Young on the left.  Not a huge difference between the two and either would strengthen our left hand side at present.
