Ya agree Roddenberry, I think Johnson is light years ahead of Downing and he went for a fee of around £7 million £3 million less than Downing

Agree about Johnson but I think he is right side isn't he may be wrong. But Kuyt is holding that ok it's the left we have been really struggling on. Not to say that Johnson wouldn't of improved us but the left a greater priority in my opinion.

He is left footed, but is capable of playing on the right as well.

Good left peg, great crosser of a ball but no pace. I wouldn't be too excited either but when you think about it, People were crying out for Adam Johnson because he might become available. He's no pace either so its a tricky one.

Difference between Johnson and Downing is Johnson has ability to go past players Downing doesn't, Johnson has much more quality than Downing.

Ah come on now don't exaggerate Kuyt ok there? He has being a disaster there for years. We need both sides sorted.

Dont know man id put them on a par. Only slight advantage for Johnson is he's younger.

Johnson is much better and why he has taken Downing place in the England squad. I actually think he has a big England future in front of him. He made a bad move going to City but the fans love him there

If i had a choice between the 2, straight answer = Johnson. But I'd have a pacey winger over him any day. ie Hazzard even N'Zogbia. I'm crying out for a pacey winger years.

Downing would be a bit like Rieira. Solid if unspectacular left midfielder. Probably the most impressive I saw from him was in the Germany v England friendly in November 2008 where he was fantastic it must be said. Would never be a signing to build for the future team but would be a start nonetheless.

It almost seems we've bluffed our way past with no proper/classy wingers but that's being found out this season.

Ashley Young and Charles N'Zogbia are streets ahead of Downing it has to be said. Young would probably cost a bomb though and you have to question N'Zogbia's temper he cried off at Newcastle and messed Wigan around a lot last year trying to go.

Although I suppose Riera was as bad for us. Young would be a dream signing but as the old saying goes: if it sounds to good to be true...it probably is...

Downing would be solid and add depth to the squad as would the Zog, provided the money's not extortionate I'd gladly take either.

As others have said, its an improvement on what we already have. Thats all we can ask for.

Also, gives us more depth. Don't know why so many people are against the move. Its the January window FFS.

Downing is a good winger at times and does the basic things well. He works hard and tracks back and is a very good crosser of the ball on occasion.
But for 10 million I'd say no.
The problem is that villa need cash if they are to buy bent (god knows why) and will look to get over the odds for downing.
Can see why kenny wants him (if at all true) but only see buying him if we got him for less than stated and that he was the first of 5 players we need in total (striker, right wing, centre back and left back). 6-8 million bracket only would make it sensible to buy him.

It's as simple as this - is he an improvement on what we have now? Answer for me is yes. If we can get him for a decent price, go for it. If anything it makes others sweat on the postition more and creates competition for spots.

Not to mention we're extremely lacking in any natural width whatsoever, personally think Johnson is our only natural wide player at the moment, Still unsure about this one though, would have to step up his game a considerable amount, if we were being truly ambitious Adam Johnson is a better option, although very unlikely it may be.

Downing has buckets of creativity and that's what we need on the left. Someone who can use his wing well and create chances.

He wouldn't be my first pick - i'd rather have N'Zogbia or Adam Johnson - but he's a good player and someone i've liked since his Middlesbrough days. Not quick, but not slow and has a superb left foot.

He and Suarez on each flank in an advanced position would be very much better than Maxi and Dirk (even though i love Maxi).

10 mill is a good price for a quality winger, or we could pay double that for Young.
I personally think Downing is mush better than N'zogbia. And we dont have a left winger at the club, not a real one.

May be its just me, but I feel like Kuyt is a poor mans Suarez.

I agree with the points made about Downing that he's an improvement on what we've already got, but I'm not sure that he's a player that's going to get us back into the top four again.

He's naturally left sided so that'll bring some good balance to our side, he does have talent but i question his consistency.
