      Mark Van Bommel (Bayern Munich)
      Jan 17, 2011 10:54:03 am
Wasn't believing it when I've seen the rumour on a french transfert site, but some papers seem to seriously link Liverpool with the Netherland 33yr old butcher. I've found on lfctv this copy of a sunday times article :

Kenny Dalglish is close to the first signing of his second spell in charge at Anfield, with Liverpool tabling a bid for Mark van Bommel that meets Bayern Munich’s valuation of their defensive midfielder.

Van Bommel, the Holland captain, has been told he can leave Bayern for any club willing to pay €3m (£2.53m) for his services. Liverpool have made such an offer, although they face competition from AC Milan, who have also bid €3m. A number of other clubs are interested in the 33-year-old but only Liverpool and their Italian rivals have come forward with solid bids.

Van Bommel has long spoken of his desire to play in England, although the lure of AC Milan, who unlike Liverpool can offer Champions League football, is considerable.

Van Bommel has wanted to leave Bayern since the German giants refused his request for a new two-year contract earlier this season. He has just six months left on his current deal, hence his low price tag. With Bayern having signed another central midfielder, the Brazilian, Gustavo, from FC Hoffenheim, the Germans had entered the January transfer window willing to let Van Bommel go.

A snag has developed, however, in the shape of an injury crisis. Bayern’s chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, is expected to hold a meeting tomorrow with Christian Nerlinger, their general manager, and Louis van Gaal, their coach, at which a decision on Van Bommel’s future will be made. Liverpool’s case may be helped by the fact that relations between Van Gaal and Van Bommel have become strained.

Van Bommel, a former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona player, was instrumental in getting Holland to the World Cup final and is seen as an experienced, combative performer who can give authority to a Liverpool midfield that has struggled this season after the departure of Javier Mascherano. Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles have not convinced in the role Mascherano used to fill and Liverpool have once more relied too much on Steven Gerrard, who is suspended for today’s Mersey derby at Anfield. Van Bommel also brings a degree of passing ability, another quality Liverpool have lacked since Xabi Alonso left.

Dalglish, installed as caretaker after Roy Hodgson left by mutual consent last weekend, believes Liverpool have to strengthen their squad during this transfer window. Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s director of football strategy, is understood to share that view. Comolli and Dalglish will this week meet John Henry, one of the club’s principal owners, to discuss transfer policy, with Henry flying to Liverpool from the US to spend several days addressing issues at his club, including appointing a chief executive, with Celtic’s Peter Lawwell favourite to get the job.

it's also reported by nesn that we made an offer :

      and other rumour sites

      http://www.totalfootballmadness.com/2011/01/17/liverpool-interested-in-bayern-munich-midfielder-mark-van-bommel/

(edit : in fact not too much reasons to worry their only source may be the sunday times)

WTF... I was thinking Liverpool had no longer the plan to become a retirement house for overpaid ex stars.

Ok he was as good as Gattuso or Mascherano in his prime. But will he really be better than Poulsen when he will be 34 ?

... and also hope that Liverpool anthem will remain "You'll never walk alone", not "You'll never walk again" after his leg breaking tackles.

Can't see it happening, thought NESV were all about buying players with youth on their side.

This would go against everything we've been led to believe so far.

He'll be better than Poulsen when he's 64 Tonio. ... but I get your drift. Personally i'd prefer we signed a play-maker if we are to strengthen that area. We've already got a plethora of non-scoring, specialised limited, holding players, thank you.  >:D

Might as well spend big on a younger and better player now rather than buy a 33 year old for a season then struggle to offload him when we want to buy a younger player next season.

Makes sense if Kenny sees Shelvey as being the future, kind of a stop gap whilst Shelvey matures.

Kind of makes sense, in a Gary Mac sort of way.

Shelvey isn't a DM, he's a creative offensive midfielder similar to (a poor man's) Gerrard.

But we have the actual Brazil DM, the Portugal DM/CM, and that old danish one and Spearing as back up.

I can't see how recruiting an international DM older than all them may be considered a good idea. If all those aren't rated good enough, the logical choice would be someone with a future, like say M'Vila or Veloso.

Wouldn't say Bommel is a DM ala Masch he also creates has great passing and gets his fair share of goals but he also has steel. Yes getting on a bit now and plays holding for Bayern but think his scoring rate for his country is not that bad.

Van Bommel is more a central midfielder than DM in my opinion. I think the last 2 years he's been better than he ever was. That said, he's too old and would only give us 1,5 seasons. Obviously I'd prefer him to Poulsen though.

He is a dirty fooker for sure, you only had to watch him in the world cup to see that.  But is it his natural instinct or the fact he has slowed down and has to foul?  He would add some steel that's for sure, but with how many central midfield players, do we really need him?

He was exactly the same in 2006 world cup (remember Portugal-Holland), and in the few Bayern matches I've seen, so I guess it's an instinct.

Now his big quality is to usually succeed to avoid punishment, while making several tackles like the one Gerrard got a red for every match (+ an incredible number of little fouls to break play). Considering the problems Liverpool often have with referees, he may be a good recruit as negociator. :)

Momo Sissoko? Are you serious, I would rather have Bommel...

Neither are young or good enough, if we want a batteling midfielder then Steven Ireland or Charlie Adams...

The only reason why you get Mark van Bommel into your club is when you desperately need a leader who holds the team together. We got the best leader in the world, we don't need no f***in MvB. Terrible player btw.

Ireland. . . There's a players with an ironic name and serious mental strenght issues. Forget him. Not a battling defensive mid either. More suited to playing in the hole
