Hodgson breaks silence on Anfield “hurt”
Former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has spoken to the press about his torrid six month spell at Anfield.

Hodgson and Liverpool parted company early last month after a dismal first half of the season, with new owners FSG appointing club legend Kenny Dalglish in his place.

Hodgson’s time at Anfield will not only be remembered for the poor results on the pitch, but also the backlash from Liverpool fans, vocally illustrating their discontent with Hodgson’s signings, tactics and expectations of the club.

“I didn’t feel drained but you do feel wounded,” he said.

“I have had a very good spell in my career and it’s a long time since I have had a very serious knock-back so, when it comes, it wounds you.

“You wouldn’t be human if it didn’t but it hasn’t dented any confidence or belief. But I can’t lie and say it didn’t hurt me, or I didn’t care, because, of course, I care.

“I care very passionately about my job and I care about football and I have had an awful lot of praise. So, when you get the opposite, it’s not something you particularly embrace, but, if you’ve got half a brain, you accept that as being part of the job or par for the course.”

Hodgson this week was appointed as the new head coach of West Bromich Albion, following Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking last week.

He also says he didn’t feel wanted at Liverpool, but accepts that the club’s new owners were put in the difficult position of wanting to destroy any legacy left behind by former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

He added, “The people who wanted me at Liverpool didn’t last too long. The people who employed me didn’t stay for too long. The new owners found themselves in a difficult situation because we weren’t winning enough games and the fans were making it perfectly clear they wanted me gone and somebody else in.

“To be fair to them, they were in a very difficult situation. I can’t for one minute suggest I was wanted at Liverpool.

“But hopefully everyone will accept this club made a considerable effort to get me and worked hard to persuade me to come and try to help preserve the status so, of course, I feel much more wanted. But I have been lucky. I felt wanted at Fulham and there aren’t that many clubs where I haven’t felt wanted.”

He should of just said he wasn't good enough.

He lacked everything a Liverpool manager should be and even his 35 years of experience couldn't make up for it.

Yes, many Liverpool fans didn't want him as manager but were willing to give him a chance but he should have seen that coming with all his embarassing interviews, poor tactics and saying it was useless to protest against the previous owners or something like that.

It's just the standards at Liverpool FC which he couldn't live up to and he can't blame us fans for wanting more because that's what that made Liverpool successful in the past.

To be fair I don't believe the majority of fans DID want him (I know I didn't) but at least I gave him a chance, many fans didn't. I tried to support him for as long as I could but the results and the football he had us playing was intolerable. I have no doubts he can be very successful with a small club, but he was sadly just out of his depth at a big club.

Best thing he can do now is keep his mouth shut and just move on with his life. He managed to turn a drama into a crisis and I don't believe too many were sad (if any)when he was replaced.

High points - the win against Chelsea and signing Meireles

Low points - too many to mention.

I see in the Independant interview he's getting his excuses in early:
"One major difference, cautioned Hodgson, is that he had six weeks more at Craven Cottage, including a transfer window he exploited to good effect. "My first game in charge there was on New Year's Day and the first I watched was on 28 December, whereas the first I saw here was on 12 February. I had 18 games left at Fulham; I've got 12 times 90 minutes here and we have to make every one count. I'd settle for staying up on the last day again as long as we survive."

      Managing expectations again woy?

Hodgson wasn't wanted, because he didn't do the job we asked him to. We were in fear of relegation and that is unacceptable for Liverpool football club so jog on you selfish t*at.

No I'm sorry but if he was winning games and had the team playing good football, nobody would have been bothered that he was the remains of the H&G legacy  :tosser:

In a world of his own but what is amazing is that anyone would consider putting him in charge of a five a side kickabout never mind a premier league team in view of his off the scale CV.

      All about Roy again.

He forgets that we may have given him a little bit more respect if he had admitted that it was he who was not good enough and that he was struggling instead of blaming everyone else.

I feel sorry for West Brom fans as they have lost a guy in Di Matteo who seemed like a real good guy and one who tried to play football the right way. Now they have a negative manager who will blame everyone but himself if they go down.

Remember it won't be his fault as he has 35 years of experience and current LMA manager of the year.

Same as mate I didn't want Kenny's reputation tarnished trying to sort out the F**k up left by H&G and him being out of it for so long as well.
RH had no reputation to speak of, not by his own opinion of course but events have proved that Kenny has all the attributes to cope with a multitude of F**k ups.

So instead of admitting his mistakes, he yet again talks about himself. Even trying to make it seem like it wasn't that bad under him.

I'd have respect for him if he at least said he was just not good enough for us. But instead he continues being an arrogant pr**k.

      Hope WBA get relegated now.

He really believes that he has a good cv.  Still can't believe people think he's a nice bloke when he makes snidey comments like this.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what we did do Roy and we didn't like what we saw

“Do I still feel I’ve got something to prove? No I think my 36 years, for those who care to study it, speaks for itself,” said Hodgson. “I don’t think I’ve got anything to prove. I do feel I’ve got a very important job on my hands.

“A lot of people are depending on me to help the club retain its Premier League status. I feel that pressure and responsibility but I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove.”

I also read he blamed him leaving on two bad results.

I mean did he not even see how he was getting us to play, it was bloody horrendous.  I can only assume the press are saving up all their observations about his tactics in case he gets the England job - to then hound him out.

I just can't believe that he genuinely thinks he's one of the best managers in Europe just because he's won some mickey mouse trophies and has 35 36 years of managerial experience.

It is even more unbelievable that a manager who claims to have that experience doesn't know where Raul Meireles should be playing or can't see the fact that he's made Liverpool (it's LIVERPOOL FC for goodness sake) to play like a midtable team.

He should use his 36 years of experience and try to explain how King Kenny has got the same team to collect 14 points from 7 matches. Considering Roy got 25 points from 20 matches, that's almost 8.8 points from 6.99 matches.

He's blaming H&G now and the fact that if we hadn't lost two games we would have been 6 points better off???
H&G of course were instrumental in his appointment so by association RH in the managers job was not in the interest of LFC and their departure meant his days were numbered. Indirectly he is correct but he would never have got near the club had it not been for the nefarius schemes of the former owners.
His second scapegoat is self explanatory.

He just can't see the fact that the main reason Liverpool fans wanted him out is because he is a what a Liverpool manager isn't.

I've said before that we accept losses and poor performances occasionally but never a manager who disrespects the fans, the club and it's traditions. Plus that with his negative football, poor management skills and embarassing interviews.

He blamed everyone and everything and is just so arrogant.

Liverpool fans got me the boot, moans Hodgson
Roy Hodgson believes his Liverpool reign was always doomed because fans at Anfield "wanted me gone."

Hodgson, 63, took over at West Brom yesterday a month after leaving Liverpool and admitted: "I can't for one minute suggest I felt wanted at Liverpool.

"The people who wanted me at Liverpool didn't stay for too long.

"The new owners at Liverpool found themselves in a difficult situation because we weren't winning enough games.

"The fans made it perfectly clear they wanted me gone and somebody else in.

"Of course I wasn't happy to be sacked by Liverpool.

"I went there with the right intentions to work for three years.

"I wanted to take Liverpool back to the very top spots but wasn't given the time to do that.

"The perception of you when go into the job is very important.

"It is no secret I wasn't perceived by a lot of people as the manager they wanted at Liverpool, they wanted someone else.

"That makes life a lot more difficult.

"You just have to accept these things happen in football but you do feel wounded.

"Everytime you lose a job your pride takes a hit."

Hodgson lasted just seven months at Anfield after being hired from Fulham last summer by then Reds' owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But was sacked by Liverpool's subsequent US owners New England Sports Ventures last month.

His tenure was plagued by problems as the unpopular Hicks and Gillett sold up amid bitter legal wrangling at the debt-ridden club.

And successor John W. Henry gave Hodgson the sack after fans turned on the manager following dire Premier League defeats to Wolves and Blackburn.

But ex-Inter Milan and Switzerland coach Hodgson has penned an 18-month deal at Albion to keep the door firmly open to manage England in future as Fabio Capello's successor.

He added: "I have been fortunate enough to be mentioned in dispatches several times with England.

"If the FA decided I was the right man I would be more than happy to do the job."

Liverpool fans got me the boot, moans Hodgson
Roy Hodgson believes his Liverpool reign was always doomed because fans at Anfield "wanted me gone."

Tapping himself for the England job.
      Un-F***ing-believable.

I can't believe that West Brom wanted him after seeing the difference in play from Woy to KK :confused-smiley-013:

This is what I can't understand either. If your club is in serious trouble and desperately trying to avoid relegation, as West Brom are, then why in gods name would you hire roy? Unless you are on some sort of Kamikaze mission.

Yep - maybe they should do an article on the hurt he caused us.

Fat F***ing chance - they think him and fat sam are the second coming for fucks sake, when they are not even second rate managers.

That's why Allerdyce hasn't got another job yet, he's waiting for Jose to get the boot and Real to come a knocking.

You were never good enough - you're bitter because you knew it. You have your level, this isn't it - don't diminish yourself by suggesting this club isnt supportive. Good night brown owl

;D what i don't understand is how he can blame other people when its so clear cut.

Fans would liked him if he won games and played a good style of football but in reality we lost games and we played a sh*t style.

Don't blame the fans because you were not good enough to manage our team. F***ing old pr**k.

In reality would he last very long using the (35 year old) tactics he tried with us.  I suspect the press would turn very quickly as would the fans.  If they wanted to know what they were getting, they only have to ask any reds fan for a reference!
