Is that Montoya that used to drive for Maclaren a few years back in Formula 1? If so, that was the last time I really watched it. Formula 1's heyday for me.

      He drives this now.
Miss him and Kimi from F1.
It's not the same since they left.
They genuinely didn't give a sh*t about the politics.

      Edwards takes Las Vegas victory
      http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89773

By Diego Mejia   Sunday, March 6th 2011, 23:18 GMT

Carl Edwards rounded up a weekend of Roush Fenway domination at Las Vegas with victory in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race as Tony Stewart led most of the way before a penalty.

The trademark back-flip celebration of Edwards was seen for the first time in 2011, but for the third in the last five Cup races counting his successes at the end of 2010.

Although Stewart looked to have the fastest car of the field, a costly penalty for the two-time champion meant it was Edwards who went on to park his car on Victory Lane, giving team owner Jack Roush his seventh Vegas win.

Edwards grabbed the lead for the first time following the sixth restart of the race and Stewart's penalty, which was caused by an air hose getting dragged out of his stall while pitting as the leader.

During the next caution the leaders pitted again for fuel and tyres and Stewart moved back up to the lead as he only took on right-side tyres, while many other changed all four. Earnhardt Ganassi's Juan Pablo Montoya also beat Edwards in the pits, but with a final stop for tyres and fuel ahead, the victory was still up for grabs.

The race went to the finish under green, making the final pitstops critical to the outcome. As Stewart pitted for the last time he had to get a full new set of Goodyears bolted to his #14 Stewart Haas Chevrolet while both Montoya and Edwards could afford a shorter stop for right-side tyres only.

First to pit after Stewart was Edwards while Montoya grabbed the lead, making the most of his speed on the long runs. After the Colombian's final stop, Edwards' momentum allowed him to put the pressure on, and he overtook for the lead with 23 laps remaining.

From behind, Stewart tried to make the most of his grip advantage while overcoming his longer final stop and although he caught Montoya and passed him with five laps remaining, he ran out of time to eat into Edwards' lead.

The victory for the former Nationwide Series champion and Sprint Cup runner-up rounded up an impressive weekend for the Roush Fenway Fords as Matt Kenseth was fastest in every practice session and claimed pole position with a new track record, before Edwards went on to give the blue oval its second win of the season.

The team's form proves it is back in business after a slow start last year, but Edwards believes there is even more to come.

"We have been performing really well and it is just a joy to drive these racecars right now," said Edwards. "You look at the way we qualified and ran, the Fords are back and are strong. It is due to the work of these two guys next to me and the guys back at the shop like [RFR general manager] Robbie Reiser. Everyone has worked really well together. It is great to drive these racecars.

"I think the team performed well but I don't believe they performed their best. There is more to come. They did do what they had to do at the right time which I was very happy with but I think they will get even better from here. I believe that all the programmes probably will. I know there is more potential in the crew that goes over the wall for me and the crew that works on these racecars so I am very excited about that."

Stewart's second place handed him the lead in the Cup standings, although that did not lessen his disappointment, as he felt without his penalty a win was guaranteed.

"It kills me to throw a race away like that, especially at a place we haven't won at yet," said Stewart, who has won at every Cup track but Vegas and Darlington. "This was a big deal today, and when you lead that many laps and have a car that's that fast and you lose it... I'm sure tomorrow when the emotion dies down we'll look back and say it was a great weekend, but it does not sit good right now."

Montoya claimed his best result of the season and his best at Vegas, as he continued to build on his best season start in Cup. He seemed to lack speed on cold tyres despite being more consistent through the long runs, making him vulnerable to Edwards and Stewart on the short run to the flag after the final stops.

"Our car was very good all day," said Montoya. "There was nothing for Tony, I think Tony had the dominant car. I think I could have been a little further ahead after the pitstop, if I had been a little more aggressive. We needed a good result for the team. [The car] has been amazing today. All weekend the guys did an amazing job."

Australian Marcos Ambrose had an impressive race, finishing fourth in his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford after starting from the front row of the grid. Meanwhile Stewart's team-mate Ryan Newman proved the speed of his boss was no fluke by taking fifth.

Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin recovered from an engine change that sent him to the back of the grid to finish seventh ahead of Hendrick's Dale Earnhardt Jr. Penske's Kurt Busch also came back from an early spin while battling Montoya for position, taking ninth ahead of Red Bull's Brian Vickers, who claimed his first top-10 finish since the blood clots diagnosis that sidelined him from most of the 2010 season.

Polesitter Kenseth was 11th after recovering from an early puncture, while reigning champion Jimmie Johnson had a lacklustre day with 16th in his Hendrick Chevrolet, ahead of the similar Impala SS of Richard Childress Racing's Kevin Harvick, who also had to charge back after speeding on pitroad during the sixth caution of the day.

Phoenix winner Jeff Gordon ended his race against the wall after his right front tyre went down, while pre-race points leader Kyle Busch survived a similar incident before his engine blew up on lap 109.

Kurt Busch, Edwards, Montoya and Newman now trail Stewart in the points standings.

      Raikkonen seals Busch Truck deal

By Diego Mejia   Saturday, April 2nd 2011, 15:20 GMT

Kyle Busch Motorsports announced on Saturday that former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen will drive for the NASCAR Truck Series leading outfit in selected races this year, starting at Charlotte on May 20.

Contrary to previous reports, Raikkonen will not be fielding his own squad in the Truck series but driving for NASCAR star Kyle Busch, whose team has won two of the series' three races that have taken place during the 2011 season.

Raikkonen will be driving as team-mate to Busch in a limited number of races, as the former Ferrari and McLaren racer will alternate his NASCAR foray with his World Rally Championship schedule.

As AUTOSPORT reported on Friday, Raikkonen will start his NASCAR transition next week with his first test at Gresham Motorsports Park, a half-mile track where he will get his first taste of an oval.

"I am really excited to have the opportunity to start my venture into NASCAR with Kyle Busch Motorsports," said Raikkonen.

"Kyle is one of the best in NASCAR, and being able to draw on his knowledge will be a valuable asset as I make my transition to a new form of racing. He has put together an experienced team that builds fast race trucks.

"I look forward to being a part of a team that has proven to be a winner on and off the race track."

Busch was thrilled with the opportunity of having Raikkonen in his team, as he looks to help the 31-year-old in making a smooth move to NASCAR.

"We are honoured that Kimi Raikkonen, a former Formula 1 world drivers' champion and proven winner, has chosen to start his career in NASCAR with Kyle Busch Motorsports," said Busch.

"Adding one of the most talented drivers in the world is a continuation of building a team of proven winners and champions at KBM. I look forward to assisting in Kimi's transition to NASCAR as both an owner and team-mate."

The Busch team's announcement made no mention of Foster Gillett, which it had been suggested would be a partner in Raikkonen's NASCAR move.

Starting off in Trucks. Wondered how long he would stay in the rallying.
Another F1 convert. Could be interesting

      All-Star return planned for Bayne
      http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91338

By Diego Mejia   Thursday, May 12th 2011, 14:16 GMT

Roush Fenway Racing officials are planning for Trevor Bayne to return behind the wheel next week for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race, driving for the Wood Brothers.

Bayne has missed the last two Nationwide Series races after being hospitalised and undergoing a number o medical tests, being released already from the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota, last week.

A diagnosis of his illness has yet to be disclosed, but the 20-year-old, winner of this year's Daytona 500 at his first attempt, has made positive progress and plans are in line for him to race in next week's NASCAR Sprint All-Star race, where he earned his place through his victory in the season-opener.

Roush Fenway Racing had hoped to have him compete again in the Nationwide Series at Dover this week, but it has taken a more cautious approach to his return, according to team officials.

"Trevor's symptoms have subsided and we are very encouraged by his progress," said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark. "Still, we are going to exercise an element of caution with his return to the track and keep him out of competition for at least another week.

"Trevor is itching to get back out on the race track, and, although it's hard to keep someone with his passion away, we feel it is in his best interest to hold off for another week. As of now, we, along with the Wood Brothers, are planning for Trevor to return next week and compete in the Sprint Cup All-Star event in Charlotte and the Nationwide Series race in Iowa."

Two weeks ago Bayne was hospitalised with symptoms initially believed to be a consequence of an insect bite that had already forced him to visit hospital following the Sprint Cup Series race at Texas on 9 April.

Tests performed at the Mayo Clinic later pointed at an "inflammatory condition" as the cause of his symptoms, according to neurologist Brian Crum, M.D.

Bayne is competing full-time in the Nationwide Series for Roush, while running a limited schedule in the Sprint Cup series.

      FSG look after Bayne.
Which means in my opening post in this thread FSG had a 1-2.
      Interesting what you find out.

I very much take Schumi's opinion on Nascar ie not that positive towards it! It's incredible how popular it is in parts of America though.

Saw it when I went to Boston last year. Commercially unparalleled and an unbelievable event. Would I go again? No. Montoya was fastest, but the yellows backed him into the pack and eventually he was put in the wall. If you could get the event size and Formula One's technical ability it would be quality. As it is Racing by numbers. Stay in the pack early on, break near the end

       Montoya praises Raikkonen's debut

By Diego Mejia   Tuesday, May 24th 2011, 05:42 GMT

Juan Pablo Montoya praised Kimi Raikkonen's performance on his NASCAR debut last weekend and does not anticipate that the Finn will have much trouble quickly stepping up the stock car ladder.

The Colombian followed the debut of his former McLaren Formula 1 team-mate closely, even offering advice during practice and ahead of the race - and admitting they probably talked more than they ever did during their time in F1.

Before Raikkonen ran at Charlotte, Montoya had said he would not choose the mile-and-a-half venue for a start in NASCAR but following Friday's race he said the Finn showed he could adapt quickly not only to the car and track but also to the different style of racing, despite a few brushes with the wall.

"Kimi did really good," said Montoya. "I thing it's good that the trucks are a bit flexible and the noses don't push in the fenders like we do [in Cup] but I think overall he did a good job. He learned a lot. It's funny because he started in the back and [was] patient, he'll start getting it. I think when you follow people you learn what they do and you can pick it up a lot faster."

Montoya remembered how he got plenty of help and support from rivals when he landed in NASCAR in 2006 and said he wanted to show the same kind of support to Raikkonen as he understood what the 2007 F1 world champion was facing at the start of his NASCAR foray.

Their meeting in practice last Friday at Charlotte was their first encounter since they retired on the first lap of the 2006 US Grand Prix after a multi-car pile up in what turned out to be Montoya's final outing in F1.

"It was more the team than him you know, telling them why is he so loose and why is he struggling," said Montoya. "Our driving styles were a little bit different in Formula 1 but I know what I would like out of a car... I just went to say hi and see how he was doing. People did it to me here and I was really shocked so if I can help, I'll lend my hand."

The Colombian says Raikkonen moving to NASCAR full-time will depend on how much he likes it and believes the first impression of the racing can be an eye-opening one. Raikkonen admitted following his debut that the racing part was better than what he expected, as he moved up from 31st on the grid to finish 15th.

"It depends if he likes it, I don't know how much fun he had [on Friday]," said Montoya when asked about the chances of seeing Raikkonen making a full-time move. "I think it's shocking at the beginning of the races - once you race around so many people all the time it's like 'wow! Haven't done that in a while, or ever', you know?"

Montoya doesn't anticipate Raikkonen having much difficulty in stepping up to the Nationwide Series next weekend, as he is already in the preliminary entry list for Saturday's event at Charlotte where he is set to drive a NEMCO Motorsports Toyota prepared by Kyle Busch Motorsports.

"I think [the car] would be very similar [to the truck], but it depends on what car he's in. I don't know, I've never driven a [current] Nationwide car but I think if he has a decent car he should be fine."

Montoya's first Nationwide Series outing was his third stock car race after competing twice in the ARCA Series. Driving at Memphis for Chip Ganassi's outfit, he started the event from ninth and crossed the finish line in 11th place and on the lead lap.

Roush Fenway and Edwards won the All-Star race. Pity I missed this now.
Another sign of FSG letting the men on the ground make the decisions, while giving them the backing they need.

Not even crazy conspiracies can sink Edwards

Nearly instantaneous charges of intentionally wrecking All-Star car bring laughs
      By Joe Menzer, NASCAR.COM
      May 23, 2011 10:53 PM, EDT

CONCORD, N.C. -- Carl Edwards hadn't been out of the winning race car more than 20 minutes Saturday night before word spread from the conspiracy theorists and reached his lips.

Edwards was sitting on the edge of a massive, champagne-soaked stage on the frontstretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway following the Sprint All-Star Race. His No. 99 Ford sat a few feet away, attached to the hook of a tow truck that was required to get it to Victory Lane after Edwards' post-race celebration in the infield grass went wildly awry.

It's fine. It doesn't matter to me. Nothing could ruin my night. If I had flipped over and broke both my arms, I'd still be sitting here smiling.

      -- CARL EDWARDS
"This is the All-Star Race. This is a big race. I finished second in the Daytona 500; I finished second in the Southern 500. So to win the All-Star Race is huge, just huge," Edwards said.

"It's not without controversy. I guess they're over there looking to see if I intentionally tore up my car, which I did not. I was trying to do a nice, full slide there and I hit a drainage pipe. I guess if you're going to tear it up, that's the time to tear it up."

Say what? Yes, officials from NASCAR were examining Edwards' car and the patch of grass where he tore it up. And yes, as is customary, they took the winning car back to their nearby Research and Development Center for further examination.

But it's a big-league stretch by the theorists to suggest, as they were in social-media spaces almost as soon as the race was over, that perhaps Edwards intentionally destroyed the front of his winning car to hide the fact that he and crew chief Bob Osborne had conspired to do something illegal to it, allowing it to fly around the 1.5-mile track faster than everyone else.

      Jack's attack

Car owner Jack Roush was incredulous at the thought of it -- meaning intentionally destroying a race car, not the fact that someone would think almost instantly that Edwards had done it on purpose to hide something.

"That might be the case, that some people might think that," Roush said. "But these celebrations after race wins have become more and more outrageous. He wasn't trying to set a new precedent for tearing a car up, but unfortunately he hit a manhole cover."

      A manhole cover?

"Yes, he hit a manhole cover. Who would guess they'd put a manhole cover in the middle [of the grass] like that?" Roush asked.

So was it a manhole cover or a drainage pipe?

Actually, it was neither. Track spokesman Scott Cooper confirmed that no such obstacles were located in the area of infield grass where Edwards' car turned into a high-speed, suddenly clumsy high-speed plow and set the theorists all a-Twitter.

Edwards credited his final restart, the work of his pit crew, and a powerful engine from the shop of renowned engine builder Doug Yates for his victory. He joked that with his share of the $1 million prize that came with the victory, he could buy lots of diapers for his family that as of a couple weeks ago added a second child to the mix. But that wasn't all.

Addressing the theorists, he wondered why anyone would think he would deliberately destroy a perfectly good race car -- one that he would have liked to have run again in the Coca-Cola 600 at the same track in eight days.

"That's pretty dumb," he said. "I really would have liked to have run that car next week. Bob says we've got as good a car as that one back at the shop. But it's not the car as much as it is the things they did to set it up -- and all that secret stuff down there in the grass."

Then Edwards quickly flashed his now-famous grin.

"I'm kidding. That's a joke. Make sure you tell everybody that's a joke," he said.

      Rock star and back-flipper

After winning and wrecking his car to a dead stop in the secret grass, Edwards climbed from it and shrugged before performing a flawless back flip that long ago became his signature move following race victories.

About 45 minutes later in the CMS media center, Roush was asked if he could talk about the value Edwards brings to the Roush Fenway Racing organization with which the driver is in the midst of contract extension negotiations.

"Well, Carl is a rock star," Roush said. "He's the only back-flipper in the field. He's the first one to crawl up into the stands [to be with fans after a win]. Some of the drivers wouldn't go up in the stands like that after a race, and for good reason.

"But Carl, he's well thought of and he's out there doing things that other people wish they had thought of first -- and he drives the hell out of our race cars."

He sure does. Sometimes he drives the hell out of them until they can't be driven any more, like on Saturday night.

Lost in all the mess being proliferated by the post-race conspiracy theorist was the fact that Edwards still remains the leader in the Sprint Cup points standings. Roush certainly hadn't forgotten as he put the lucrative All-Star win into perspective.

"It's a great win. We've had a great finish to last year and a good start to this year," Roush said. "This is not a points race, so it's not to be equated to the race we're going to have here next weekend. But certainly it raises confidence in our team that our engineering is doing a nice job, and that we're on track with what we need to be doing right now."

Meanwhile, there was that mysterious patch of car-eating grass ...

Edwards wasn't going to let it ruin his mood. He said he didn't care what anyone was saying and wouldn't allow it to possibly taint his latest win.

"It's fine. It doesn't matter to me," he said, smiling again. "Nothing could ruin my night. If I had flipped over and broke both my arms, I'd still be sitting here smiling."

And someone, somewhere, would be wondering if he did it on purpose to dupe NASCAR.

Carl Edwards Wrecks His Car During Victory Celebration! LMFAO!!! XD

Kenseth frustrated by fuel-mileage NASCAR races
      http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94684
By Diego Mejia   Tuesday, September 20th 2011, 16:29 GMT

Matt Kenseth would like to see a fix to fuel-mileage races after he ran out of gas on the last lap of Monday's Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland, taking a hit on his chances of contending for this year's title.

The Roush Fenway racer led from pole the first portion of the rain-delayed event and was in contention for victory in the closing laps, where the leaders ran off the pace to try to save enough fuel to finish the race without pitting again.

Kenseth was set to secure at least a top-five finish but his tank ran empty on the last lap and he was then pushed by fellow Ford driver JJ Yeley so that he could cross the finish-line. Although he was initially classified eighth, he was penalised for being assisted on the last lap and was demoted to 21st, a blow to his championship bid.

"I don't know what to do about the fuel mileage," said Kenseth. "It is really frustrating to be a race car driver and they drop the green on the last run of the day when you are supposed to put on a show for the fans and you have to run half throttle and can't floor it or you will run out of gas.

"It is pretty aggravating to do all the work and qualifying and pit stops and adjustments but none of it makes a difference."

He added: "It is not a great definition of racing, but how are you going to fix it? I don't know how to fix it. It is frustrating. You do all that work and for nothing.

"There were so many races this year that have been like that already where the guy running half throttle, or pitted off sequence or whatever and has won. I wish they could figure out how to fix it because it is not a lot of fun."

Kenseth was among a number of Chase contenders who ran out of fuel, others including reigning champion Jimmie Johnson, former Chase leader Kyle Busch, Hendrick's Jeff Gordon and Stewart-Haas Ryan Newman.

Johnson and Newman still managed a top-ten finish, but Busch and Gordon have lost ground in the title race after being classified 22nd and 24th respectively.
