Music That Defined You Growing Up
      Feb 21, 2011 03:23:16 pm
Looking back through the Grunge thread got me thinking.
There are bands that I loved growing up that don't fit into that thread.
Bands that would be wasted in the what are you listening to thread, but bands that influenced me heavily growing up.
What bands shaped your tastes and how good are they when you listen back.
Faith No More - Epic - [Official video]

Metallica - Enter Sandman Music Video

      The Smashing Pumpkins - Zero

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

Can't post youtube links cause I'm at work now, but there are quite a few. Nirvana were my first favorite band. I could listen to them all day long, non stop. They're one of the main reasons why I like rock.

Rolling Stones - the first rock band I ever listened to. My uncle gave me a tape with one of their concerts recorded when I was very little and I remember I was like... "Wow!". My fav song back then was Start Me Up, which nowadays I see as one of their worst, actually, but I still love it for all it means to me.

The Beatles - don't need to say much, I grew up listening to them, sometimes I would love them, then I'd suddenly turn to punk rock and forget them for years, just to come back asking for their pardon.

Ramones / The Clash - 2 of the most relevant, if not the most important bands in my life. There was a time in which I would only listen to Punk Rock. Thankfully these days are over cause as much as I still love punk rock, my horizons were too narrow back then. Anyway, those 2 bands defined my taste more than any other.

From the Ramones, I take the beauty of simplicity. I'm not against a guitar solo, or instrumental virtuosity (well, not anymore! :D), but the Ramones taught me an important lesson about what's really important in music. It's music, after all, not a Guitar Hero contest.

Thanks to the Clash - in my eyes, the best band ever -, I had my first contact with many different musical styles and rhythms, such as reggae and ska. I still remember the shock when I listened to the London Calling album for the 1st time. "Is it punk rock?". I had too many pre-concepts about music in my head and was not used to see so much stuff mixed and combined. With time this album grew on me and today I'd say it's just the best album in the history of rock ;D

I went through different stages growing up, the first music I really got into (and still love) was Linkin Park.

Linkin Park - One Step Closer

      07 Linkin Park - Faint

Then, I lead onto grunge (leave that to that thread) but I also discovered LED ZEPPELIN.

      Led Zeppelin - Kashmir (HQ)

Led Zeppelin - Australia 1972 (Immigrant Song)

You know whats funny though, my parents always got edgy when I discovered something new like when I started listening to Nirvana and stuff like that, thinking it would 'change me' - yet I discovered all the Led Zeppelin in amongst their childhood music collection, as well as other stuff :D

Me own taste is music was shaped by me mam and dad's music taste, but since me mam's taste in music is sh*t I took me arl fella's. Then as I grew into the Mod music I started listening to the Kinks and Small Faces a lot more and not as much of the Motown like me dad.

Then me own generation was central to Oasis and the Verve. Last few years it's been the Rifles and the Enemy. Always favoured music that says something to me and music I can generally relate to. One of the reasons why I weren't greatly influenced by music until me teens but as a kid was still finding meself enjoying Oasis' music.

When I was a litte kid, I listened to the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and Westlife alot. :lmao:

Don't like boybands anymore but I liked punk rock bands now. Used to listen to Simple Plan but their songs are too weird now. Also loved Avril Lavigne's early albums.

Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, The City Drive, Drake Bell, 3 Doors Down and Blink 182 play the kind of music I like listening to but the two stand out bands I still love until today would be Green Day and Rilo Kiley.

I was a soul and Tamla Motown girl  ;)  That was when I first started going out and hitting the clubs  ;D  Loved Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Four Tops, The Temptations etc - still do to this day  ;D

I then grew up with the likes of Blondie, Michael Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, 10CC, T-Rex, the list could go on and on.....

I have quite a diverse taste in music and enjoy lots of different genres.  Even now, I love dance music- at my age !! ...think I need to grow up  :lmao: :lmao:

I love Mod and Soul music but I only got into it when I was older.

But I totally forgot to mention Blur in my first post, they were my favorite band for a few good years. I couldn't even like Oasis cause of the Blur vs Oasis fights, and as a good dedicated fan, I hated them for a while ;D But then I saw how stupid it was, and that both were great, great bands.

Oasis, Roses, Charlatans for me. Loved the nineties scene. Still listen to them, as well as the music they were influenced by as well as the bands these days that have been influenced by them ie Rifles, Courteeners and such like.

I grew up in a musical house and had a good influence. Plus, being a DJ for the last 6 or 7 years, I never really allowed myself to get tied into one genre, but tried so kinda specialise in a few. I did change styles an awful lot.

Main ones through my teens were like Eminem, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Blink 182, Green Day, Bruce Springsteen or anything from the 80's rock-y wise. I did change so much it's hard to even name bands, let alone songs.

Not a music from a band, but by the best film score composer, Hans Zimmer.

I grew up watching this again and again and again. And again

The bands I listened to growing up was the likes of Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Will Smith, Kid N Play and many others. I had quite the collection of random bands of different genres of music. I remember dancing to Bon Jovi songs in my Aunt's garage while my older cousin went to see Bon Jovi. It was my way of being at the concert. I think I was about 7 or 8 years old.

Seeing how the title specifies a time in my life I can answer this one a lot easier than the other music related threads.

I started finding my own way in music when I was about 14. My first album was Under A Blood Red Sky and I was all about U2.

Still one of my favorite U2 songs:
      U2 - Party Girl

Probably the second band I was into was The Cure and The Head on the Door was my first. Favorite track would (still) be:
      Push-The Cure

Other than these two, it was what was then called "college rock"... REM, The Smiths, etc.

Growing up I often had the sound of classical and Celtic folk music entering my ears thanks to my Dad. It was pretty good but the first band as a kid I admired and I bonded to was The Beatles. Whether it was singing When I'm Sixty Four or Yellow Submarine and the such in Primary School or watching The Bootleg Beatles on Blue Peter perform Hello Goodbye I was captivated. It'd be years before I got all their albums because I then found U2 who became just awe inspiring to me. Also being a sucker for Coldplay their performance of Clocks at the 2003 Brit Awards on tv when I was 12 really awed me.

Brilliant thread this! Can't believe I missed this before. Very interesting read aswell.

My mother loved soul music. Sam Cooke, Sam & Dave, Marvin Gaye etc. But my favourite by far was Otis Redding, what a voice. Still absolutely love his music. My father listened to old rock mostly, The Who, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones. But Led Zeppelin was by far the most listened to by him and myself. Then there was my older brother, who was really into hip-hop. A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, stuff like that. He really got me hooked on hip-hop for a while. The Wu-Tang Clan being one of my all-time favourites there besides the ones I just mentioned. But I also really loved and still love grunge, Nirvana the most. That's what defined me early on. A bit later on I mostly listened to Radiohead, The Shins, Tool, Joy Division and Sigur Ros.

First record bought for me - Michael Jacksons , Thriller (aged 8)

First record I bought for myself - Bon Jovis , Slippery When Wet (aged 12)

Record that turned me to metal (and nothin but metal from there on) - Iron Maidens , Powerslave (aged 14)

Record that showed me there is more to music than just metal - Radioheads , The Bends (specifically "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" (aged 21)
