Liverpool lead race to sign Nigerian international
      22nd Feb 2011 - Transfer Gossip

Reports in Nigeria have claimed that some of Europe’s top clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham have been following the progress of Marseille left back Taye Taiwo.

Liverpool apparently sent talent scout Damien Comilli to watch Taiwo in the recent friendly against Sierra Leone and view the player as a ready made fit for the problem left back position.

The Nigerian Tribune also claims that Tottenham have watched the player along with Real Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus, but their headline made it clear that it is Liverpool that are the clear front runners.

It would be strange for Tottenham to go after the player, they already appear to be set with left sided players, the same to a certain degree applies to Manchester United, the same however cannot be said about Manchester City, they will but almost anybody.

One thing is becoming clear, that Liverpool will be very active in the transfer window come the summer as they continue the rebuilding process at Anfield.

Would be a fantastic addition!  Him, Mexes, and Marveaux are all available on Bosman's.... splash some cash on a DM (Matuidi/Mvila) and a class winger and we'd be set.

Supposedly he has Crouchy, or he's in talks with the Club he wants to go to.  Which makes me think it's not us mate as it "appears" like we are still looking at LB's.

Don't rate him like many of you guys do. He gets disinterested defensively, he's not an intelligent player and he shoots way too F***ing much for how little success he has with his shot.

He's better then what we have but I think there is better out there.

I agree Debs. Too much talk of a left back for it to be us i feel.

      Would prefer Coentrao myself anyway.

Agreed here mate. In an ideal world I'd go for Coentrao, but I'd be happy also with Jose Enrique.

Coentrao's name seems to be number 1 on everyone's list for the LB spot. I myself would much prefer Aly Cissokho, but Coentrao's a great player too. Hope we get one of them.

Taiwo would be a good signing but if the rumours are true then hes already decided where he wants go. Though who knows maybe it's us he's in talks with. 8).

Never rated Coentrao and still don't. He was terrible for Portugal in their recent friendly.

Cissokho all day long for me if it's between them.

I think Taiwo's strongest reports are with Atletico right now.

Well would be a good if we get him for free (+ sign on fee). I don't think we'll get him, he's said he's agreed to join a team and I the talk is that we've been looking at left backs recently.

Apparently so mate. They're in the shits financially so probably waited one season to get him for free.

Hope we get him in the summer. Saw last night's game and Taiwo was perfect for me. He kept quiet lady Nani all night and his distribution and crossing were fantastic as well.

Don't know why we're discussing Cissokho and Coentrao in a thread about Taiwo but anyhow...

Purely talking about LB, Cissokho all day long but he won't be leaving for anything less than £25m (and that's an extremely conservative estimate, closer to £35m IMO) but Coentrao is certainly second choice.

The only reason I'm leaning more towards Coentrao is: a) could probably pick him up for £20m; b) because of his added versatility of being able to play at LM/LW.

Was brilliant last night I thought.

If he can be that consistent then I'd love to see him here. Doubt we are the club he has 'already signed for' though.

He certainly represents the best value for money :)  While I'd have Cissokho before him, he (Cissokho) would cost us at least half our summer budget.  We could probably land Taye by simply offering him like a 5mil signing bonus.  Good business for a solid and relatively young LB.

He has signed a pre-contract with Porto.  Perhaps Coentrao is on his way out?
