Taye Taiwo rejects #LFC and signs pre-contract with Benfica reports O Jogo via the excellent @cahiers_dusport
Wow, he's going to regret that.

I assume Coentrao will be on his way out in the summer then.

He has signed a pre-contract with Porto.  Perhaps Coentrao is on his way out?

Coentrao plays for Benfica mate, and Benfica is the club Taiwo, I like Taiwo as a player, haven't seen much of Coentrao apart from a little in the world cup, but from reports he's better.

A source mentioned to me they think Coentrao to Real is all but agreed, although with Marcelo playing well not sure why they need him

Got confused there, don't know how his moving to Porto would affect Benfica's Coentrao leaving.  Got confused because the last time I got excited over a LB from the Portuguese league he was from Porto [Cissokho].  A simple click on the link would tell you Benfica.  Cheers for clearing that up.

edit: Coentrao is far superior to Taiwo, no questions about it - I think most people will agree on that.  Added bonus is that Coentrao is also no stranger to playing at LW (pretty much every European match or derby against Porto) and handles it with ease frequently chipping in with goals.  Cracking player and in the words of bacon face "I'd love to have 'im at the club".

Concentrao could be going to us, journalists aren't always right as we know.

It says Taiwo has signed a pre-contract with Benfica, having offered him more than double his current wages and a substantial signing prize, to replace Fabio Coentrão who might be leaving for 30 million euros at the end of the season. It doesn't say where Coentrão would be going though. And considering his versatility, I don't think Taiwo arriving at Benfica necessarily means Fabio leaving.

Would rather have Taiwo for free than Coentrao for 20+ million. Might even rather have Taiwo for free than Coentrao for free. So pretty good deal by Benfica if true.

Probably a combination of guaranteed first team football (which he struggled to hold down at Marseille) and the generous wages.

Interesting, wonder what it means for Coentrao (sp) Unless he is playing LM/LW currently. Not seen them play since they played against us.

I don't believe we seriously wanted him to be honest, because like you said he would have chosen us over Benfica.

AC Milan have confirmed they have signed both Taiwo and Mexes.  Mods, lock away.

Milan confirm Taiwo and Mexes captures

MILAN - New Serie A champions AC Milan will sign defenders Taye Taiwo from Olympique Marseille and Philippe Mexes from AS Roma on free transfers, coach Massimiliano Allegri said on Monday.

"In defence, Milan are sorted. We have taken Mexes and Taiwo," Allegri told a news conference on the eve of their Italian Cup semi-final second leg at Palermo.

Nigerian left-back Taiwo, who the Rossoneri are trying to sign as an EU player if he can gain a relevant passport, will fill the only troublesome spot in Milan's line-up this term.

The 26-year-old has been with the French champions since 2005.

France centre-back Mexes, out with a cruciate ligament injury, said last month that he would probably be joining Milan in the close season after seven years in the Italian capital.

Milan's ageing squad is in need of renewal despite their scudetto triumph and a possible first league and cup double.

Several players including out of favour midfielder Andrea Pirlo are out of contract in the close season and others are in their mid-30s.

"When the season is over we will talk with the club," Allegri said of Pirlo's situation while responding to questions about media speculation linking Milan with former playmaker Kaka - now at Real Madrid - and Santos's Brazilian youngster Ganso.

"The first has won everything in his career and the second must still learn a lot," Allegri said.

Owner Silvio Berlusconi loosened the purse strings this term to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic having previously reined in spending during the global economic crisis and watched Inter win five straight scudettos.

However, the two free transfer deals show the Italian prime minister is still keen on a bargain when he sees one.
