Not to forget one of the biggest all time greats...Steve Heighway!  ;)

Anyways back on topic....I don't think that Long is really worth a punt at the moment...if he keeps improving at the same rate maybe he'd be worth a shot in a couple of years...time is on his side!

He is being linked again today for £7.5 million, have to say I think this would be an awful signing, ya the lad has had a decent season in the championship other than that he has being completely mediocre through his career. Please don't sign the poor mans Kevin Doyle

Would never be anything but a squad player. We have enough of them. We need world class quality.

To be honest I don't even think the lad is good enough to be a squad player. Don't think he has the quality to get goals in the Premiership

Think you're being too harsh there, but we don't need him. Poor mans Doyle and I'm not sure we'd need Doyle either

I don't, the lad is limited at best was getting bored by the Reading fans at the start of the season.  I've watched a hell of a lot of the lad since I played against him when he was 16 and am confident the lad would struggle big time in the Premiership. No way a club like us should be targetting Shane Long

I'm hoping that Crouch but it is a persisting rumour and Comoli has meant to have watched him on a few occasions

Isn't it a link that is coming from Ireland mainly? That may be why. And Comolli has been to France, Italy, Spain and across England looking for the best talent available. Reading, and Shane Long, seems a farfetched pit stop on his route across the continent.

      Reds watch Shane Long

      27th Jul 2011 - Transfer Gossip

Liverpool have watched Shane Long to assess the hype around the Reading striker.

Scouts from Anfield saw the Republic of Ireland international score twice during his side's friendly with Northampton at the weekend.

Long, 24, had been a target for West Brom and Everton but, as yet, West Ham are the only side to express a serious interest in a player who scored 28 goals last season. The London club made a £6m bid which was rejected.

Alberto Aquilani is expected to complete a season-long loan to Fiorentina in the next 48 hours while Fulham, FC Copenhagen and Udinese are monitoring Christian Poulsen.

Mexican starlet Marco Bueno will join Liverpool on trial with a view to signing a five-year deal.

I thought we throw him out of our radar but it seems he's down the list for another look. I don't think we took him serious and they say he's not up for big missions.

I thought Beckford would be sh*te for Everton and not worth a gamble but he was alright for them last year so a decent price for Long might be worth a punt.

Will add some pace to the line up and could make a very good impact sub.

      ROI standard, good Championship player.

Not Liverpool standard and never will be.
I'll reiterate my initial post when this was first mentioned.

He's good for a mediocre Irish national team (mediocre in today's terms) and is a good Championship player, but ill never be good enough to do a job for us.

Decent player with bags of pace that could do a job for us in my opinion but he's Irish and plays in the championship so that must mean he's gash.

And not a first choice for the Irish team either.

I do feel he could be decent to use as a last ten/15 minutes man though he does have pace and can score goals. 7.5 mill though????

He was excellent last season for both club and county, albeit he wasn't playing in the premier league or for the all conquering England. Still at 24 he hasn't reached his full potential and is definitely a step up from Ngog, could be a handy squad player.
