Liverpool 'make enquiry' over €17m Brazilian star
      1st Mar 2011 - Transfer Gossip

Liverpool have reportedly made enquiries with regards to the availability of Michel Bastos.

The Lyon left back has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Ligue 1, leading to speculation that Kenny Dalglish is keen on bringing the player to Liverpool in the summer.

French sources claim the Anfield outfit have already made contact with the French side, and that a bid in the region of €17 million could be made by the Liverpool boss.

Dalglish is thought to be in the market for a left-sided defender, with Paul Konchesky out-of-favour on Merseyside and set for a summer exit after joining Nottingham Forest on loan for the remainder of the season.

Taye Taiwo and Jose Enrique have also been linked with a move to Liverpool, who appear set to splash the cash once again after huge spending in January.

NESV, the club's new owners, spent over £55 million on Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in an effort to bolster the club's attacking line, but 'King Kenny' has hinted at further additions to strengthen the squad as a whole.

Bastos, who can play in a more advanced position and is renowned for his crossing ability, would also provide Liverpool with experience. A former Feyenoord player, the 27-year-old has 10 caps to his name for Brazil.

Liverpool have a number of options available for the problem left back position, and it seems certain that they will make a move at the end of the season.

Bastos isn't Lyon's LB, Cissokho is - he only plays at LB for Brazil.  Either way, I think this could be a great move for our left back position if we keep playing the 5-3-2/3-5-2/3-6-1 or whatever it is we're playing.

Imagine being able to pick from Kelly (could be used as a CB in the three man defence too), Insua, Johnson  and Bastos as our wingbacks - all bar Kelly would benefit from being used in that role rather than a traditional fullback position and Bastos is equally confident playing further up the field too.  All width could be provided by the wingbacks, we'd still have three centrebacks - not a bad move at all IMO.  Dead ball specialist too!

£17 million for a 27 year old would kinda go against the supposed philsophy of NESV. This lad is more a wing back then left back but then maybe that is Kenny plan for next season, wing backs.

Heard a lot about him only raising his game for champions league occasions heard he has not being as impressive in the league. Only should be targetted if Kennyis going to play 3-5-2 next season.

He's not a wingback. Plays for Lyon on the left side of the front 3. I'm a fan to an extent, but I don't think he's up to English football personally. Would rather get a true left back.

I personally think he is a wingback and have seen a lot of similar comments about that today, he has played more wing back or left midfield for Brazil. Saying that he played left back for them during the world cup but was seen as there weak link

To me he's a winger, that's how he plays for Lyon aswell. He only played as a wingback for Brazil.
If we're interested in him I'd be surprised if it wasn't for the left winger position. Had his best season at Lille before moving to Lyon.

I'm not so sure about this one.... he is definitely talented, but at 27 years old, it would be a risk to splash that much money on a winger who might not be able to adapt to the English game.  He is definitely not an option for the LB role in a 4 man defense.  While he can play as a wingback, he's more of a traditional winger.  I'd prefer Ashley Young as he is younger, cheaper, and has proven he can do it in England.

Versitile can play on the wing or as a left back. The 17 million price tag might put NESV of this lad,at 27 he would be seen as a bit old in there eyes.Would not be a bad signing all the same.Agree with Harry there,Ashley young would be my option if i had to choose.

A brilliant player, but it would take time for him to adapt and I doubt he would want to go to a physical league at his age. We desperately need a dead ball specialist though.

He's even played on the right for Lyon in quite a few games so i don't see him even as a wingback.

We cannot seriously expect to bring in Bastos and use him as a left back? Play him as a winger yeah, as a defender... only if we want to play like the Madrid Galaticos/Keegan's Newcastle.

Would he work as a wing back though, in a 3-5-2?  Is he capable/athletic enough to get up and down the pitch for 90 minutes?

From what I've seen he doesn't have the work ethic I think to be a true wingback. I think Brazil playing him at left back was more of an experiment than anything (and one that didn't go over too well).

But we aren't playing 3-5-2 all the time are we? Bastos is a great player and one I hugely admire but I think he's a left winger, wing back at best. I wouldn't want to buy him as a left back because there's no point, we need a proper left back. Whilst I realise Bastos is a good player and would improve our squad, I don't see this as a feasible transfer because we need a proper LB and also seem to have Marveaux as LB/WB/LM cover down the left.

Bastos is a good player, for sure. He's skilled. Since this season he plays on the left or on the right. He doesn't play as LB with Lyon. Playing as a midfielder don't rely on him for the defensive tasks. To my mind it's the negative point about him.
Beig honest he disappoints me. I expect more from him.

sh*t source tbh, and I can't see it. As a player he is very good when he wants to be would be how I would describe him. Doesn't consistently perform at a high level.

Big name player though. Is £17M a lot of money in todays market? Not really. Could be worth a punt for a LWB/LW slot.

We won't be signing any 27 year olds or older this summer, let alone for that amount of money. Quality player but this transfer is a non-starter.

FSG would sanction a 27/28 year old...just not to a 5 year deal. There is a misconception that we will never sign "older players" that's just not true IMO. The idea is not to do deals like Joe Cole's, I would guess that a 27yo would fetch a 2-3 yr deal max...but a deal could be done.

I think FSG are willing to look at players in their late 20's, but they would have to be available for fairly cheap transfer fees as they will only lose value over the next few years.  Contrast that with players like Aguero, Mata, Hazard, etc who will gain value in the next 2-3 years.  I think FSG are looking for players who will be the Aguero, Mata, and Hazards of tomorrow though....  I don't see us splashing 30-40M on any one player any time soon.
