the last few weeks, I'm really liking this verse, particularly the highlighted bits.

      Call all your friends
And tell them you're never coming back
      'Cause this is the end
Pretend that you want it, don't react

      The damage is done
The police are coming too slow now
      And I would have died
I would have loved you all my life

A bleak song for this time of year but I love the lyrics as they get you thinking about those less fortunate.

      Glasvegas - Cruel Moon

      Slipping in,
      Under all conciousness,
Homeless is where the is heart is,
Walk on by and I'll be fine,
      This cardboard cover,
Keeps away the gales of the night,

Cos at some points I think this ain't real,
Some nights I say this shouldn't be me,
This christmas even I'm out on the street,
With a lifetime to spend it hurts me this truth,
      Under this cruel moon,

      Slipping,
      Under all conciousness,
Homeless is where the is heart is,
So walk on by and I'll be fine,
      This cardboard cover,
Keeps away the gales of the night,

And I know it's late and you're thinking I'm crazy,
I share the same dreams as you, yesterday,
You think this is a world away,
Beware of darkness because this could be you could someday,,
      Under this cruel moon,

      Well now I'm no hero
      That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
      Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?
      Except roll down the window
      And let the wind blow
      Back your hair
      Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real

      Great song.

Great song mate - also love Mary Queen Of Arkansas:-

Mary queen of Arkansas, it's not too early for dreamin'
The sky is grown with cloud seed sown and a b***ard's love can be redeeming
Mary, my queen, your soft hulk is reviving
No, you're not too late to desecrate, the servants are just rising

Well, I'm just a lonely acrobat, the live wire is my trade
I've been a shine boy for your acid brat and a wharf rat of your state
Mary, my queen, your blows for freedom are missing
You're not man enough for me to hate or woman enough for kissing

The big top is for dreamers, we can take the circus all the way to the border
And the gallows wait for martyrs whose papers are in order
But I was not born to live to die, and you were not born for queenin'
It's not to late to infiltrate, the servants are just leavin'

Mary queen of Arkansas, your white skin is deceivin'
You wake and wait to lie in bait and you almost got me believin'
But on your bed, Mary, I can see the shadow of a noose
I don't understand how you can hold me so tight and love me so damn loose

But I know a place where we can go, Mary
Where I can get a good job and start out all over again clean
I got contacts deep in Mexico where the servants have been seen

Elvis Costello - Tramp The Dirt Down

I saw a newspaper picture from the political
      campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously
      in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips
Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
      long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
      Margeret [sic] was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
      the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
      haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
      dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
      justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful
      discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
      for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
      haven't got the whole disease
      Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
      the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord
      your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms
      and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life
      could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

I'm banking on playing this very loud, for a very long time one day soon. She makes me so f#n angry  :f_steam:

I have too many to put on here, however I don't think many bands write good lyrics.

With your feet on the air
And your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it .... Yeah
Your head'll collapse if there's nothin in it
      And you'll ask yourself
      Where is my mind
      Where is my mind
      Where is my mind

Someday you might find your hero
Some say you might lose your mind
I keeping my head down now for the summer
I'm outta my mind let me pull the other
I'm gonna take that tiger outside for a ride

      What a life!
      What a life!

Keep on chasing down that rainbow
You'll never know what you might find
Over the sunset on the horizon
Maybe you dream but it tastes like poison
I'm gonna take that tiger outside for a ride

      What a life!

      I don't think Noel Gallagher is a great lyricist, nor do I think he's a bad one, barring some howlers - but I'm a big fan of his, and he is personally the greatest vocal melodist I've ever heard. However, these ones from him are probably the best;

'Strangle my hope and make me pray/to a god I've never seen but who I've betrayed' - Let's All Make Believe

      Gas Panic
"What tongueless ghost of sin crept through my curtains?
Sailing on a sea of sweat on a stormy night
      I think he don't got a name but I can't be certain
And in me he starts to confide

That my family don't seem so familiar
And my enemies all know my name
And if you hear me tap on your window
Better get on yer knees and pray panic is on the way

My pulse pumps out a beat to the ghost dancer
My eyes are dead and my throat's like a black hole
And if there's a god would he give another chancer
An hour to sing for his soul"

^ I think this one here's got great imagery and sums up the paranoia and delusion of drug abuse better than any other song.
Of course, anything by The Smiths will do, and plenty of Morrissey's work too.

Went to see them at The Cathouse in Glasgow early '94 (I think) before they made big breakthrough. One of worst gigs I've ever been too because they just bickered the whole way through and walked off a couple of times.

I was never a fan - but their tunes were a constant in the pubs and clubs throughout my mid twenties hedonism!
