Lyrics that mean far too much to me personally. I listened to this (or rather the NIN cover) on the drive away from my ex wife's house where I had to leave my kids behind. I'm never sure whether they helped me get through or almost tore me apart. For a while it was touch and go whether I would still be here today and even now, I can't listen to either version or even read the lyrics without a lump in my throat. It's a brilliant song anyway but a very powerful emotional anchor for me.

      'Hurt' - Johnny Cash :

      I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
      I focus on the pain
      the only thing that's real
      the needle tears a hole
      the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
      but I remember everything
      what have I become?
      my sweetest friend
      everyone I know
      goes away in the end
and you could have it all
      my empire of dirt

      I will let you down
      I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
      upon my liar's chair
      full of broken thoughts
      I cannot repair
      beneath the stains of time
      the feelings disappear
      you are someone else
      I am still right here

      what have I become?
      my sweetest friend
      everyone I know
      goes away in the end
and you could have it all
      my empire of dirt

      I will let you down
      I will make you hurt

      if I could start again
      a million miles away
      I would keep myself
      I would find a way.

For the ladies, one hundred and ninety-five pounds of beef,
chinky eyes, curly hair and gold teeth,
Swingin' with this here stud, you need practice,
i'm leaving floods of blood on your mattress,
I'll leave you holdin' your swollen backside and rollin',
fillin' all three holes just like bowlin',
Don't ask me what the price is,
but it's more than your battery-operated devices

      My favourite Beatles lyric

      In My Life

      There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
      Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

You know mate there are many threads in here, most favorite album, top 5 whatever, most favorite band, but I haven't posted in them cause truth being told I am a very indecisive person in that area. But when I saw this tread, I knew, without a doubt what was gonna be my first choice  ;)

I'll go for a less introspective lyrics, but still very beautiful in my eyes. It's about the Spanish Civil War.

      The Clash - Spanish Bombs

      Spanish songs in Andalucia
The shooting sites in the days of '39
Oh, please, leave the vendanna open
Fredrico Lorca is dead and gone
Bullet holes in the cemetery walls
The black cars of the Guardia Civil
Spanish bombs on the Costa Rica
I'm flying in on a DC 10 tonight

Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
yo te acuerda oh mi corazon
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
yo te acuerda oh mi corazon

Spanish weeks in my disco casino
The freedom fighters died upon the hill
      They sang the red flag
      They wore the black one
But after they died it was Mockingbird Hill
Back home the buses went up in flashes
The Irish tomb was drenched in blood
      Spanish bombs shatter the hotels
My senorita's rose was nipped in the bud

The hillsides ring with "Free the people"
Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39?
      With trenches full of poets
The ragged army, fixin' bayonets to fight the other line
      Spanish bombs rock the province
I'm hearing music from another time
Spanish bombs on the Costa Brava
I'm flying in on a DC 10 tonight

Spanish songs in Andalucia, Mandolina, oh mi corazon
Spanish songs in Granada, oh mi corazon

      I've been a moonshiner,
      For seventeen long years,
      I've spent all my money,
      On whiskey and beer,
      I go to some hollow,
      And sit at my still
And if whiskey dont kill me,
Then I dont know what will,

I go to some bar room,
      And drink with my friends,
      Where the women cant follow,
      And see what I spend,
      God bless them pretty women,
      I wish they was mine,
Their breath is as sweet as,
      The dew on the vine,

Let me eat when I am hungry,
Let me drink when I am dry,
A dollar when I am hard up,
      Religion when I die,
      The whole world's a bottle,
      And life's but a dram,
      When the bottle gets empty,
It sure aint worth a damn.

Lyrics-wise, Lupe Fiasco is definitely my favourite artist. Unlike other rappers, his lyrics aren't shallow. For example:

      'Words I Never Said'

      [feat. Skylar Grey]

      [Skylar Grey:]
It's so loud Inside my head
With words that I should have said!
As I drown in my regrets
I can't take back the words I never said
I can't take back the words I never said

      [Verse 1: Lupe Fiasco]
I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit
Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets
How much money does it take to really make a full clip
9/11 building 7 did they really pull it
Uhh, And a bunch of other cover ups
Your childs future was the first to go with budget cuts
If you think that hurts then, wait here comes the uppercut
The school was garbage in the first place, that's on the up and up
Keep you at the bottom but tease you with the uppercrust
You get it then they move you so you never keeping up enough
If you turn on TV all you see's a bunch of "what the fucks"
Dude is dating so and so blabbering bout such and such
And that ain't Jersey Shore, homie that's the news
And these the same people that supposed to be telling us the truth
Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist
Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn't say sh*t
That's why I ain't vote for him, next one either
I'm a part of the problem, my problem is I'm peaceful
And I believe in the people.

      [Verse 2: Lupe Fiasco]
Now you can say it ain't our fault if we never heard it
But if we know better than we probably deserve it
Jihad is not a holy war, wheres that in the worship?
      Murdering is not Islam!
      And you are not observant
And you are not a muslim
Israel don't take my side cause look how far you've pushed them
Walk with me into the ghetto, this where all the Kush went
Complain about the liquor store but what you drinking liquor for?
Complain about the gloom but when'd you pick a broom up?
Just listening to Pac ain't gone make it stop
A rebel in your thoughts, ain't gon make it halt
If you don't become an actor you'll never be a factor
      Pills with million side effects
Take em when the pains felt
Wash them down with Diet soda!
      Killin off your brain cells
      Crooked banks around the World
Would gladly give a loan today
So if you ever miss payment
They can take your home away!

      [Verse 3: Lupe Fiasco]
I think that all the silence is worse than all the violence
Fear is such a weak emotion that's why I despise it
We scared of almost everything, afraid to even tell the truth
So scared of what you think of me, I'm scared of even telling you
Sometimes I'm like the only person I feel safe to tell it to
I'm locked inside a cell in me, I know that there's a jail in you
Consider this your bailing out, so take a breath, inhale a few
My screams is finally getting free, my thoughts is finally yelling through

Bit of generalisation there.  There's a ton of great rappers whose lyrics aren't shallow (Lupe himself included).

Generally speaking, most of my friends aren't fans of rap but most will usually like a few (not all) of the tracks I'll play for them.  The one that people usually are blown away by is "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique.  Granted, it's quite long but the backing music is "A Love Story" by Henry Mancini which is quite pleasant.

Immortal Technique - Dance With the Devil (Full Version w/ Lyrics and Hidden Track ft. Diabolic)

One of the most raw and lifelike personifications of the ghetto and the mentality that plagues what the hip hop industry and it's followers have become.

I totally agree with you on Immortal Technique.

I mostly listen to rap music, but I still think most rap songs are shallow. I'm a big fan of the Game as well...

      A Song For Bob Dylan

      Oh, hear this Robert Zimmerman
I wrote a song for you
About a strange young man called Dylan
With a voice like sand and glue
      Some words of truthful vengeance
They could pin us to the floor
Brought a few more people on
And put the fear in a whole lot more

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know your alive

And I don't want the world to see me
      Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Billy Joel has written some amazing stuff. This is a tale about being a soldier in Vietnam. It is one of his most amazing live concert songs(once it hits the 2nd half), with deafening helicopter sounds and "searchlights" as the song begins. Some of the people on stage in the video below are survivors of the 9/11 tragedy in NY.

      Goodnight Saigon lyrics

      We met as soulmates
      On Parris Island
      we left as inmates
      from an asylum
      and we were sharp
      as sharp as knives
and we were so gung ho to lay down our lives.

      We came in spastic
      like tameless horses
      we left in plastic
      as numbered corpses
      and we learned fast
      to travel light
our arms were heavy but our bellies were tight

      we had no homefront
      we had no soft soap
      they sent us Playboy
      they gave us Bob Hope
      we dug in deep
      and shot on sight
and prayed to Jesus Christ with all of our might.

      We had no cameras
      to shoot the landscape
      we passed the hash pipe
      and played our Doors tapes
      and it was dark..
      so dark at night
and we held onto each other
      like brother to brother
we promised our mothers we'd write

      (chorus)
and we would all go down together
we said we'd all go down together
yes we would all go down together.

      Remember Charlie?
      remember Baker?
      they left their childhood
      on every acre
      and who was wrong,
      and who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight,...

      We, held the day,..
in the palm of our hands
      They, ruled the night
And the night, seemed to last as long as six weeks
      On Parris Island
      We held the coastline
      they held the highland
      and they were sharp
      as sharp as knives
they heard the hum of the motors
      they counted the rotors
and waited for us to arrive

      (repeat chorus)
