Social Distortion - I Was Wrong

      Well, when I was young
I was so full of fear
I hid behind anger, held back the tears
It was me against the world,
I was sure that I'd win
But the world fought back, punished me for my sins
Well I felt so alone, so insecure
I blamed you instead made sure I was heard
And they tried to warn me of my evil ways
But I couldn't hear what they had to say

      I was wrong
      Self destruction's got me again
      I was wrong
I realize now that I was wrong

And I think about my loves,
well I've had a few. Well I'm sorry that I hurt them,
      Did I hurt you too?
      I took what I wanted
Put my heart on the shelf
But how can you love me when you don't love yourself?
It was me against the world
I was sure that I'd win
The world fought back, punished me for my sins
And they tried to warn me
      Of my evil ways
But I couldn't hear what they had to say
      I was wrong
      Self destruction's got me again
      I was wrong
I realize now that I was wrong
      I was wrong, yeah
      I was wrong
      I grew up fast
      And I grew up hard
Something was wrong from the very start
      I was fighting everybody
      I was fighting everything
But the only one that I hurt was me
I got society's blood running down my face
Somebody help me get outta this place
How could someone's bad luck last so long?
Until I realized that I was wrong.
      I was wrong
      Self destruction's got me again
      I was wrong
I realize now that I was wrong
      I was wrong
      Self destruction's got me again
      I was wrong
The only moment that I was me
      I was wrong

The Slackers - Rude and Reckless ;D

I asked my father for some advice,
He answered quickly, he didn't think twice.
He said a thinkin' man don't do too much,
Know what you're doing and do as you must.

And learn to be rude and reckless,
      Don't make a fuss.
You have to be rude and reckless,
      Do as you must.
You have to be hard and callous
In your heart and your hands.
Learn to be rude and reckless,
      It'd make you a man.

I said now Papa, I'm just a boy.
I want to get groovy, I want to bring joy.
He said that's well and good for the son of a richer man,
But that ain't you now sonny, please understand.

You have to be rude and reckless,
      It'd make you a man.
You have to be rude and reckless,
      Don't misunderstand.
Women will try to run you,
      And when they're done
You'll be a nice young man,
      Not too much fun.
You have to be hard and callous,
      You have to be strong.
You have to rude and reckless,
      Don't be all wrong.
You have to be a no hesitation,
      Don't think too much.
'Cause a good love is sayin'
Of a hand that leave a touch.

      You have to be...

I said now Papa, I'm just a boy.
I want to get groovy, yeah, I want to bring joy.
He said that's well and good for the son of a richer man,
But that ain't you now sonny, please, please understand.

You have to be rude and reckless,
      It's part of the plan.
You have to be rude and reckless,
Do right by your fellow man.
There should be no political correctness,
      You have to drive fast.
You have to be strong, not wrong,
      You have to be strong.

You have to be rude and reckless...

Sorry to repeat myself but I can actually add the video now so anyone who doesn't know the song will know what I mean.

Lyrics that mean far too much to me personally. I listened to this (or rather the NIN cover) on the drive away from my ex wife's house where I had to leave my kids behind. I'm never sure whether they helped me get through or almost tore me apart. For a while it was touch and go whether I would still be here today and even now, I can't listen to either version or even read the lyrics without a lump in my throat. It's a brilliant song anyway but a very powerful emotional anchor for me.

      'Hurt' - Johnny Cash :

      I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
      I focus on the pain
      the only thing that's real
      the needle tears a hole
      the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
      but I remember everything
      what have I become?
      my sweetest friend
      everyone I know
      goes away in the end
and you could have it all
      my empire of dirt

      I will let you down
      I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
      upon my liar's chair
      full of broken thoughts
      I cannot repair
      beneath the stains of time
      the feelings disappear
      you are someone else
      I am still right here

      what have I become?
      my sweetest friend
      everyone I know
      goes away in the end
and you could have it all
      my empire of dirt

      I will let you down
      I will make you hurt

      if I could start again
      a million miles away
      I would keep myself
      I would find a way.

Just so you know the Johnny Cash version is the cover mate. The song was written by Trent Reznor, not Johnny Cash. But Johnny's voice took this song to a whole new level and Trent has even been quoted as saying he prefers Johnny singing it.

I didn't know that. I love the NIN version and have seen it performed live but the bit that niggles me is the lyric 'crown of sh*t' rather than 'crown of thorns'. Ruins it a bit.

Yeah, it was Johnny who cleaned it up with 'crown of thorns'. I remember when this came out he had only recently lost his wife, June Carter Cash. It made it that much sadder.

      Good call, though. Gut-wrenching tune.

I love lyrics that tell stories, like this one:

      The Raconteurs - Carolina Drama

I'm not sure if there's a point to this story
But I'm going to tell it again
So many other people try to tell the tale
Not one of them knows the end

It was a junk-house in South Carolina
Held a boy the age of ten
Along with his older brother Billy
And a mother and her boyfriend
Who was a triple loser with some blue tattoos
That were given to him when he was young
And a drunk temper that was easy to lose
And thank god he didn't own a gun

Well, Billy woke up in the back of his truck
Took a minute to open his eyes
He took a peep into the back of the house
And found himself a big surprise
He didn't see his brother but there was his mother
With her red-headed head in her hands
While the boyfriend had his gloves wrapped around an old priest
      Trying to choke the man

      Ah Ah Ahhh...

Billy looked up from the window to the truck
Threw up, and had to struggle to stand
He saw that red-necked b***ard with a hammer
Turn the priest into a shell of a man
The priest was putting up the fight of his life
But he was old and he was bound to lose
The boyfriend hit as hard as he could
And knocked the priest right down to his shoes

Well, now Billy knew but never actually met
The preacher lying there in the room
He heard himself say, "That must be my daddy"
Then he knew what he was gonna do
Billy got up enough courage, took it up
And grabbed the first blunt thing he could find
It was a cold, glass bottle of milk
That got delivered every morning at nine

      Ah Ah Ahhh...

Billy broke in and saw the blood on the floor, and
He turned around and put the lock on the door
He looked dead into the boyfriend's eye
His mother was a ghost, too upset to cry, then
He took a step toward the man on the ground
From his mouth trickled out a little audible sound
He heard the boyfriend shout, "Get out!"
And Billy said, "Not till I know what this is all about"
"Well, this preacher here was attacking your mama"
But Billy knew just who was starting the drama
So Billy took dead aim at his face
And smashed the bottle on the man who left his dad in disgrace, and
The white milk dripped down with the blood, and the
Boyfriend fell down dead for good
Right next to the preacher who was gasping for air
And Billy shouted, "Daddy, why'd you have to come back here?"
His mama reached behind the sugar and honey, and
Pulled out an envelope filled with money
"Your daddy gave us this," she collapsed in tears
"He's been paying all the bills for years"
"Mama, let's put this body underneath the trees
and put Daddy in the truck and head to Tennessee"
Just then, his little brother came in
Holding the milk man's hat and a bottle of gin singing,

La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la, la la la...
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la, la la la...
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah
La la la la, la la la la, yeah

Well now you heard another side to the story
But you wanna know how it ends?
If you must know, the truth about the tale
      Go and ask the milkman

One of the best Bob Dylan lyrics

      Bob Dylan - Desolation Row

They're selling postcards of the hanging
      They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
      The circus is in town
      Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
      They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
      From Desolation Row.

      Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
      Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend
      You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
      After the ambulances go
      Is Cinderella sweeping up
      On Desolation Row.

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
      The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
      Everybody is making love
      Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
      On Desolation Row.
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
      On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
      She wears an iron vest
      Her profession's her religion
      Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
      Noah's great rainbow
      She spends her time peeking
      Into Desolation Row.

      Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
      He looked so immaculately frightful
      As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
      And reciting the alphabet
You would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
      For playing the electric violin
      On Desolation Row.

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
      Inside of a leather cup
      But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
      "Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
      You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
      From Desolation Row.
Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
      The Phantom of the Opera
In a perfect image of a priest
      They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
      After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get outa here if you don't know"
Casanova is just being punished for going
      To Desolation Row.

      At midnight all the agents
      And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
      Where the heart-attack machine
      Is strapped across their shoulders
      And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
      By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
      To Desolation Row.

      Praise be to Nero's Neptune
      The Titanic sails at dawn
      Everybody's shouting
"Which side are you on ?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
      Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
      And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
      Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
      About Desolation Row.
Yes, I received your letter yesterday
About the time the door knob broke
When you asked me how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke ?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Dont send me no more letters no
      Not unless you mail them
      From Desolation Row.

Yeah, that one I did know but not until a couple of years ago. I was listening to a Johnny Cash album (Unchained?) without track listings and thought, 'hang on, this sounds familiar' ;D

I remember getting slated by one of my mates years ago over Hurt.
He asked me what my favourite Johnny Cash song was and I said Hurt.
      He went made.

That's not one of his songs it's a cover of NIN. I hate when people say that's there favourite.

I told him to get over it. Just because it's a cover doesn't mean it's not his best song. Heartbreaking song that.

San Quentin Prison is a great album. It's almost like a riot is about to break out. I love the bit when he asks for some water after winding up the guards with the San Quentin song and one of the prisoners shouts at him not to drink it. Classic

Yeah 'Hurt' is both my favourite Cash song and NIN song!

To see Trent Reznor perform it on a dark stage with just a dim red spotlight on him is a special moment.

I think Glasvegas James Allan is a great lyricist and this is my favourite of his from It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry.

So this is where the outcome unfurls and the truth is being told
A cloud has gathered over my head and now i know
Infidelity and my good friend ecstasy doesn't work, it makes you worse
I'm feeling so guilty about the things i said to my mum when i was ten years old
I'm feeling so guilty about any old sh*t
And how I think my missus is F***ing every guy that she looks at
This is it, the end was always coming and now its here

So this is the grande finale
      The crescendo of demise
      This is the happy ending
Where the bad guy goes down and dies
      This is the end
With me on my knees and wondering why?
Cross my heart, hope to die
Its my own cheating heart that makes me cry

Glasvegas its my own cheating heart

      Fake Plastic Trees

She lives with a broken man
      A cracked polystyrene man
      Who just crumbles and burns
      He used to do surgery
      For girls in the eighties
      But gravity always wins

It wears him out, it wears him out
It wears him out, it wears him out

I know she won't be classed as a lyrical genius or anything like that, but I really like the lyrics to this one as I feel that money is not everything, is not the end of the world and don't need it to be happy. If you have your friends, your music, Liverpool and a beer, what more do you need? ;D

      Jessie J - Price Tag ft. B.o.B.

Everybody look to their left (yeah)
Everybody look to their right (ha)
      Can you feel that (yeah)
      We're paying with love tonight
It's not about the money, money, money
We don't need your money, money, money
We just wanna make the world dance,
      Forget about the Price Tag
      Ain't about the (uh) Cha-Ching Cha-Ching.
Aint about the (yeah) Ba-Bling Ba-Bling
      Wanna make the world dance,
      Forget about the Price Tag.

      Shame they split up.
The Depreciation Guild – My Chariot

terrifying is the sound, the ice breaks beneath you
they would never pull you out, but i would and i will
drawing ever closer now, the construct surrounds you
i can only give you more, though you push me away

the hole you feed, it will gratify you instantly
but what of me, am i far too real for you to see?

"the end is nigh, it lives i die
      or bow before its feet
      we synthesize, blow open wide
      and i'll wake up obsolete"

      all alone out there,
miles of beach stretched between us
all your feelings soiled with with acid and sad
crawling through the sand, your mountain of data
everything you've sought, corrupted and bad

the hole you feed, it will gratify you instantly
but what of me, am i far too real to see

"the end is nigh, it lives i die
      or bow before its feet
      we synthesize, blow open wide
      and i'll wake up obsolete"

in the waning light of what's digital
      make you whole
I will pick you up, i'm your chariot
      take you home

Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed
      Is here in my arms
      Words are very unnecessary
      They can only do harm

How to Save a Life - The Fray

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
      Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

      Land of Confusion - Genesis
There's too many men, too many people
      Making too many problems
And not much love to go round

This is Your Life - The Killers
The sky is full of dreams
But you don’t know how to fly

She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
It’s not always rainbows and butterflies
It’s compromise that moves us along
My heart is full and my door’s always open
You can come anytime you want

      Invincible - Muse
      And during the struggle
      They will pull us down
But please, please let's use this chance to
      Turn things around
And tonight we can truly say
      Together we're invincible

Just heard this song again today and a very powerful lyric in my opinion.

      Daddy don't go out tonight
Just stay home till morning light
Me and mamma don't feel right
      Please hold us tight
Daddy why did you go to work
When you know just how much we love you so
      Please come back tomorrow

They're giving out guns in the ghetto
They're saying they will set you free
One day I'll have children of my own
But I'm afraid they won't have me

A couple of Tim Minchin efforts

      The Good Book

Swing your daughter by the hand
But if she gets raped by a man
And refuses then to marry him
      Stone her to death!

If you just close your eyes and block your ears
To the accumulated knowledge of the last two thousand years
Then morally, guess what? You're off the hook
And thank Christ you only have to read one book

      Just because the book's contents
      Were written generations hence
      By hairy desert-dwelling gents
      Squatting in their dusty tents
      Just because what Heaven said
Was said before they'd leavened bread
      Just 'cos Jesus couldn't read
Doesn't mean that we should need
      When manipulating human genes
To alleviate pain and fight disease
When deciding whether it's wrong or right
To help the dyin' let go of life
Or stop a pregnancy when it's
      Just a tiny blastocyst
There's no reason why we should take a look
      At any other book
      But the Good Book
      'Cause it's good
      And it's a book
      And it's a book
      And it's quite good!

Good is good and evil's bad
And kids get killed when God gets mad
And you'd better take a good look
      At the Good Book

      Prejudice

      In our modern free-spoken society
There is a word that we still hold taboo
A word with a terrible history
Of being used to abuse, oppress and subdue
      Just six seemingly harmless letters
Arranged in a way that will form a word
With more power than the pieces of metal
That are forged to make swords

A couple of Gs, an R and an E, an I and an N
Just six little letters all jumbled together
Have caused damage that we may never mend
And it's important that we all respect
That if these people should happen to choose
To reclaim the word as their own
It doesn't meant the rest of you have a right to it's use

      So never under estimate
      The power that language imparts
Sticks and stones may break your bones
      But words can break hearts
A couple of Gs - jeez, unless you've had to live it
An R and an E - even I am careful with it
An I and an N - and in the end it will only offend
Don't want to have to spell it out again...

      Yeah

Only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger
Only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger
So listen to me if you care for your health
You won't call me ginger 'less you're ginger yourself
Only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger

      The levellers another mans cause.

      levellers-another mans cause-lyrics

Gunshots shatter in the peace of night
      Just another fire fight
For the people of this little town
      But for the dying soldier
Well he's feeling ten years older
As he's lying face down on the ground
All the words that are in his head
And all the words his mother said
As she would put him to bed back home

Your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother he was killed in the Last War
And your mother well she's lying home alone

Every day she sees your face
On the picture on the fireplace
With your brother as he was leaving school
Then a day came five years ago
You said, "Mother, I need to know"
And you spoke the words your brother spoke before
"I seen the things my Daddy's done
And I've seen the medals Daddy's won
And I know that this is what he would have wanted for me."

But, your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother he was killed in the Last War
And your mother well she's lying home alone

Now she wonders at it all
Just in whose name do these brave young heroes fall
And how many more are going to answer that call
They're going to fight and die in another country's war
They're going die for a religion they don't believe in at all
They're die in a place they should never've been at all
      Oh, never've been at all

'Cause, your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother he was killed in the Last War
And your mother well she's lying home alone

And your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother he was killed in the Last War
And your mother well she's lying home alone

      Oasis Masterplan.

      Oasis - The Masterplan Unplugged

Take the time to make some sense
Of what you want to say
And cast your words away upon the waves
      Bring them back with Acquiesce
On a ship of hope today
And as they fall upon the shore
Tell them not to fear no more
Say it loud and sing it proud
      And they...

Will dance if they want to dance
      Please brother take a chance
      You know they're gonna go
      Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don't know
      What is gonna be
      Please brother let it be
Life on the other hand won't let you understand
Why we're all part of the masterplan

I'm not saying right is wrong
It's up to us to make
The best of all things that come our way
And all the things that came have past
The answer's in the looking glass
There's four and twenty million doors
      Down life's endless corridor
Say it loud and sing it proud
      And they...

Will dance if they want to dance
      Please brother take a chance
      You know they're gonna go
      Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don't know
      What is gonna be
      Please brother let it be
Life on the other hand won't let you understand

Never heard that Levellers one before Redblood. Very good lyric.

One of my all time favourite lyrics

People say I'm the life of the party
'Cause I make a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
      Deep inside I am blue

So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer it's easy to trace the tracks of my tears
      I need you, need you
