^ Yes, too injury prone was the phrase I was trying to think of :D

No, it was a two year contract that he signed.

Liverpool youngster Mavinga set for Rennes move but Cissokho not coming

Last updated at 10:58 PM on 17th July 2011

Liverpool left back Chris Mavinga, 20, hopes to complete his £1million move to Rennes on Monday after the clubs agreed a fee.

However, Liverpool have distanced themselves from a move for Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho despite claims a £9.5m deal was imminent.

Lyon had been asking for £16m for the 23-year-old who has been scouted by Liverpool and Manchester City prior to their signing of Gael Clichy.

Makes sense they'd want £16m, considering what they paid only a year ago.

Seems like a bargain deal... they bought him from Porto for €15m and are supposedly selling to us for €9m...

      This is either:
      a) total bullshit
      b) a sign that we should be worried
      c) proof that Lyon have appointed Richard Paris as their negotiator...

I think we can file this one in column a)

personally i think Robinson is ready even at 17/18. He's an exceptional left back in the making.

He is a good young player mate but I'd be worried about destroying him like we did Insua, he should be eased and nurtured into first team action.

I agree, we can't rush these kids as hungry and impressive as they have been, can't pile first-team responsibility on them at such a young age.

That said, I won't be that bothered if we go into the season with Johnson at LB, with Insua, Aurelio and Robinson for cover and Kelly at RB with Johnson (with one of the LBs filling in) and Flanagan as cover. We'd only struggle if there were a couple of long term injuries.

In January, I thought this would be the priority, but three impressive youngsters make it less urgent. If we can get Baines though... ;D

I'd agree with the above, I think in January we were making lb a priority this summer but the emergance of Robinson flanagan and Kelly plus jonnos performances at lb have possible caused a re think, I'd certainly agree we don't want to run these kids into the ground, they need managing and not played week in week out but I genuinly think they may be re thinking the lb situation.. I do think we need a cb more though now

Robinson Kelly and flanagan have saved us millions in the transfer Market

Careful now people, we've seen this scenario too many times for our liking to have not learned anything from it.  Promising youngsters supplement the squad, they don't form half of it (exaggeration but you get the drift).  How would buying Cissokho in this case be bad for Robinson's development?  It's all a bit to "eggs in one basket" riding on the fact that an 17 year old (who is still physically developing and not yet conditioned to be put under such intense duress) is expected to be a first team starter ASAP just to appease the fans.  Let Robinson develop at his own pace and learn from those more experienced than him (which includes Cissokho), let's not get carried away and burden him with additional pressure just yet.

I think our prioritys have changed for LB. We have Insua back, he knows the EPL, he looks strong and we have plenty of cover there now. Johnson, Aurelio, Robinson and Flanno can play there + if we are desperate Agger and Wilson can play there. Aly Sissokho is a good player but he would need time to get used to the EPL. I say we have more pressing positions to get hold of, CB and striker.

Johnson will start as our left back this season in my opinion, I think Kenny rates Kelly as the better right back hence cooling on Enrique and the like.

Not buying a left back while spending 71 M since january would be crazy IMO. Left back has been our Achilles' heel for quite some time and we need to solve this problem. It was similar situation with strikers when we had no backup for Torres. There were so much quality left backs available (Clichy, Enrique, Cissokho, Izaguirre, Taiwo) and we still haven't signed anyone.

We do but we need to clear some names off the wage bill in that position first. Still question marks over Insua, Aurelio and Degen who are still at the club.

We don,t have to prioritise LB now, we have cover there. Everyone seems to say that Insua is,nt good enough and we need a better LB. Insua was trown into the squad by Rafa and it did hinder his development but how many players, last season, improved under Kenny and Clarke. Why cant Insua improve under Kenny and Clarke. Why spend money for the sake of it. Roy and co made a big booboo loaning out Insua and wasting money buying Konchesky, lets not make that same mistake.
