Cant see Jones having a change of heart, ok there may well be a hurdle or two to get over as far as Scum are concerned, but they wont see that as a problem, if it's a matter of a few extra million they'll find it, even if it means Rooney has to F**k a few more Grannies, look at the end of the day it will be CL football which will ultimately decide it, thats the biggest carrott any club can dangle, and thats fine by me because if a player any player who cant pledge his committment to LFC  can f***in do one, end of, so if messers Jones and Young do ply their trade at 'ol Toilet' then F**k 'em', it will be even more satisfying F***ing them over next season anyhow, we only want players who want to be here, not players with a half arsed attitude.

If we got him for 22 mill i don't think it would be that expensive relative to what we'd be getting, an already solid defender, with at least 10 years ahead of him and the potential to improve further with training from the likes of Steve Clarke, possible Sami H and Carra.

haha sorry i never watch them through principle, except when us and barca whooped their arses.

the point is this could just be the transfer of the season if we trump them, our status will leapfrog theirs and fergie will be left with scouse egg on his face......sweet
It may even be a tactic by us so they keep paying more and then their finances hit the skids

United's Jones bid in tatters: Blackburn warn they won't be bullied as Liverpool launch £22m swoop

      By Nick Harris
Last updated at 10:42 PM on 11th June 2011

Manchester United’s multi-million pound signing of teenage defender Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers lies in tatters.

Blackburn’s Indian owners have reacted furiously to what they perceive as United’s attempt to railroad them into selling the 19-year-old and have told United: ‘We will not be bullied’.

And in a stunning 11th-hour development on Saturday, the Mail on Sunday can reveal that Liverpool have told Blackburn they will pay £22million for Jones, a move that will ruin Sir Alex Ferguson’s holiday mood as he takes a break in the south of France.

Arsenal have also belatedly submitted a bid that tops United’s £16.5m offer, and with Chelsea showing serious interest in the player, too, an auction appears to be unfolding. It will come as a bitter blow to Ferguson if he misses out on Jones, and it will sting all the harder if the player ends up at United’s fierce rivals at Anfield.

Rovers’ owners have been angered by United’s attitude and at a meeting on Saturday in Pune, India, which was attended by manager Steve Kean — straight off a plane to Mumbai — they resolved to prevent the deal going through.

United have offered to make Jones the highest-paid teenager in the history of English football with a startling £80,000-a-week contract, but Blackburn are even prepared to top that.

Rovers chairwoman Anuradha Desai made it clear to Kean and fellow executives, who made up a ‘war council’ in India, that they must try to persuade the defender to stay. The prospect of being a future club captain is also being dangled before Jones.

Money is said to be ‘not an issue’ for Desai’s family, who are billionaires through their Venky’s poultry conglomerate.

They want to keep their best players, especially homegrown talents such as Jones.

But if they fail to persuade him, they will do all they can to elicit the best price from one of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, United or Tottenham, telling Jones: ‘If you go, you go where we get the best money.’

A source close to Rovers said. ‘United can’t do what they want in this case. Jones is a Blackburn player and while there is a clause that could mean he leaves, it’s far from the straightforward issue everyone assumes it to be.’

Jones signed a United shirt for fans while training with England’s Under-21s in Denmark on Friday and, along with his representatives and United, had thought the transfer was a formality.

The player wants to join United but it is not known whether he has even been informed yet that Liverpool have made a bigger offer.

A major headache for United is in the interpretation of the release clause in Jones’s contract. They triggered it with their £16.5m offer and were allowed to talk to the player as a result.

But Rovers have taken legal advice and insist the clause does not force them to sell to the first club to meet the figure.

The biggest loser in all this could be England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce.

He would not name his team on Saturday night for the opening game against Spain as the possibility of the transfer deal distracting the versatile defender grew.

Interesting article Mac_red but am I the only one thinking that if Jones wants to go there that much then best to look at other targets?

We could bid more and get the transfer but if his heart really isn't in it 100% then may not be the best move for us.

It's a great story, and is funny as fook over on redcafe.

The only sure thing is that there seems to be a hiccup.

But, using a bit of common sense, if ferdinand was worth 30 mil 10 years ago (give or take a year) then surely Jones is worth 22 mil now.

It would be very funny, but as to it happening, well...

He will go to the Mancs regardless ...

The only issue is the price they will have to pay, and it seems that we are driving it up at the moment ...  ;D

A lot of different reports on this one is right mate.

If he has had a medical there and been signing their shirts then his heart is probably set on the move and I'm not sure us bidding more to get the player is a good move.

I've no real interest in getting one up on the mancs, just want us to focus on getting quality players who want to play for this club, preferably as their first choice.

Lpool did make new bid for Jones today. Odd. Player already rejected #lfc for #mufc, so tough position for him. Utd to conclude tmrw.

If he's been signing manc shirts then that sounds to me like he's convinced he's going to be part of that scummy team next season.

Be good if we can push the price they have to pay up by a few million though :D

Manchester United confident of signing Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers despite Liverpool's hijack bid

Manchester United hope to complete the £16.5 million signing of Phil Jones on Sunday, despite an audacious last-ditch attempt by Liverpool to hijack the move.

      By Mark Ogden
      11:19PM BST 11 Jun 2011

United are confident they will finalise the deal with Blackburn to buy Jones, who is due to play for England Under-21s against Spain in Denmark on Sunday evening.

Jones passed his United medical and agreed personal terms with the club on Wednesday but the completion of the deal was held up by Blackburn’s Indian owners, who hoped to get a bigger fee for the 19-year-old defender.

On Saturday morning, the transfer took a dramatic twist when Liverpool stepped in with a counter offer for Jones, who has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for offers of more than £16 million.

Liverpool’s bid is believed to have been around £6 million more than that of United, and was therefore welcomed by Blackburn’s owners, who dispute United’s interpretation of the clause.

They think an offer of £16 million merely allows a club to talk to Jones, and have decided that if the player is determined to leave, they should aim to have an auction for his services.

But Jones has told Blackburn he wants to join United rather than Liverpool, and the Old Trafford club are convinced that the detail of Jones's contract means they will succeed in completing his signing within a matter of hours.

United have already beaten Liverpool to another mutual summer transfer target, Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.

Saturday’s drama was hardly the ideal build-up to England’s first game in the European Under-21 Championships.

Jones is expected to form a central defensive partnership with prospective new United team-mate Chris Smalling, as Stuart Pearce’s youngsters face tournament favourites Spain.

Pearce, who believes Jones will go on to captain England’s senior team, said the player’s move to United was not in doubt.
