Gomes and AC Milan? He'd be the new Dida. That isn't a compliment...

Former U.S. international Brad Friedel is set to leave Villa Park to join Tottenham Hotspur, sources have confirmed to FOX Soccer.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, having finished a three-year run at Aston Villa, will move to White Hart Lane on a free transfer, with an announcement from Spurs expected early Friday.

Friedel, whose ongoing streak of 275 consecutive appearances is a Barclays Premier League record, will be joining his fourth club in England's top division, having previously played for Liverpool (1997-2000) and Blackburn (2000-2008) before his stint in Birmingham.

Friedel had been in discussions with Liverpool about a return to Anfield, with Arsenal also having shown interest in bringing the veteran goalkeeper to the Emirates. Ultimately, Friedel agreed to play for Harry Redknapp and Spurs, though details of his new contract were not available.

In his 14 seasons in the Premier League, Friedel has made 428 appearances, winning a League Cup in 2002, earning a runners-up medal in 2010 in the same competition last year. He was chosen Blackburn's Player of the Year for the 2002-03 season and also won the Turkish Cup while with Galatasaray in 1996.

As a member of the U.S. men's national team, Friedel made 82 appearances, the last of which came in February 2005. In 2002, Friedel was in goal as the United States reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup, the States' deepest venture in the competition.

During coverage of the 2011 UEFA Champions League final (on which Friedel appeared), FOX Soccer Channel analyst Eric Wynalda referred to Friedel as the best goalkeeper the United States has ever produced.

He now joins a Spurs club coming off back-to-back top five finishes, Tottenham having relied on Heurelho Gomes in goal since the 30-year-old Brazilian moved from Ajax in 2008.

Gomes is currently in discussions with Serie A champions AC Milan about a move to Italy, a transfer that would leave Friedel with undisputed claim to Spurs' starting goalkeeper position.

      Spurs complete Friedel deal
Tottenham have signed goalkeeper Brad Friedel on a free transfer from Aston Villa.

Friedel, 40, first moved to the Premier League in 1997 when he joined Liverpool from Columbus Crew, and he then established himself as one of the league's top goalkeepers during an eight-year spell with Blackburn.

The USA international left to join Villa in 2008 and remained first-choice despite the presence of compatriot Brad Guzan and, in February, Friedel became the club's oldest ever player.

With his contract due to expire this summer, he has now agreed a move to Tottenham, which is likely to increase speculation over the future of Spurs' current No. 1, Heurelho Gomes, who has come under fire after a series of errors during the run-in.

Harry Redknapp said on the club's official website: "Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience. It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club in Gomes, Carlo [Cudicini] and now Brad and it means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well."

Villa chief executive Park Faulkner said: "I would like to thank Brad for the terrific contribution he made at Aston Villa in his three seasons here and our supporters will no doubt echo these sentiments. We wish him well in the future and look forward to seeing him again at Villa Park."

In fairness to him, he put football over money (I'm assuming, even though he could be getting more at Spurs) so fair play.

It's Tottenham's cheap way out IMO. They need a striker or two and my guess is they didn't have enough money to splash out on a GK.
