After a disastrous spell at Inter, former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been handed an "extremely attractive" chance to return to management by Atletico Madrid, reports The Times.


The Spaniard - who still lives on Merseyside - had been linked with a move back to the Premier League, but has told Atletico he will consider the opportunity while on holiday and make a decision when he returns.

Benitez - who endured a torrid spell in Italy after leaving Liverpool in 2010 - is said to be in no rush to return to club management and keen to select the right option.

His Inter tenure saw one trophy - the World Club Cup - but also saw the Scudetto slip out of his hands and to rivals AC Milan, with a public spat with Nerazzurri owner Massimo Moratti over transfer funds resulting in some bizarre outbursts, including an cryptic reference to a "mountain of sugar" in one post-match conference.

Benitez has long admitted his admiration for Atletico, having started his coaching at Real Madrid's youth teams, but often spoken on his fondness for their cross-town rivals.

In February he said: "I have always had sympathy for Atlético Madrid, because, among other things, I have friends there and my father always liked Atlético. He said he was going to support Atlético Madrid ahead of Real and I have always had much sympathy for them since. The team has always seemed spectacular, especially their fans."

Benitez returns from holiday in 10 days time.

I hope Rafa takes it myself, he's looking for a project and Atletico are certainly that at the moment, but will he turn them down and wait for a job in England to come up ?

I would love to see him land this job and make a real go of it! For obvious reasons I would rather see him take this job than the Chelsea one...just incase like!  Also I'm sure he could tell Aguero where he should ply his trade

Added pressure knowing your nemesis in european football is back in a leauge which you have to win & dealing with guardiola who is close to rafa.

Jose would love that little rival back. Be a good move for RAFA as well. I would have thought Villa must be looking at him as well. Perhaps the Chelsea rumours could also be something to ponder. RA wants a Euro tactition after all. Of course the fact Torres is there might have hidden meaning as well. Rafa would be better placed in pursuading the likes of Matta & Navas to the Bridge. Add those 2 & Kaka & Chelsea will really be pushing on & getting the avergare age down.

Navas won't transfer to another club, he's homesick.
Anyway, I doubt Rafa would take the Chavski job, reckon he respects Liverpool too much to do that.

Don't know how keen he would be to join the club when they may have potentially lost De Gea, Forlan and Aguero? He'd hardly be off to a flyer, add to that Atletico's rumored financial position and he'll get a fraction of sales to strengthen the squad. On top of all that he's a Real Madrid man.

Still it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world if he did go there, I just think it is unlikely.

Rafa Benitez has confirmed today Atletico Madrid do not sign for Atletico.

The Benitez has been without a club after visiting Inter Milan , but still want to live in Liverpool where he has his home.
