Americas Cup, 1919. Uruguayan keeper Roberto Cherry refuses to be substituted even in extreme pain, and finishes the match against Chile (no subs at the time). His hernia is strangled and dies.

Uruguay had a friendly arranged with Brazil, but declines to participate mourning its young lost player. Argentina takes Uruguays place, and plays the friendly...wearing Uruguays jersey!!!. Brazil plays the match...wearing PeƱarols jersey( Robertos club)!!!  The money raised was donated to the family of the deceased player.

The match ended 3-3, and the "Roberto Cherry Cup" was donated as well

Tought id post this, to remember and honor a long lost time.

There are some beautiful stories in South American football that Eurocentrism has stopped many football fans to enjoy
