We were never going to get rid of Cole on such high wages.  To be reducing the burden is all we could ask for.

Liverpool FC agree deal to sell Christian Poulsen with others set to follow him out of Anfield

      by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo
      Aug 31 2011

LIVERPOOL have agreed a deal to sell Christian Poulsen to French club Evian TG with Joe Cole and David Ngog set to follow him out of Anfield on transfer deadline day.

The size of the fee for the Danish international hasn’t been revealed but the Ligue One new boys have been given permission to hold talks with the midfielder.

Poulsen’s departure has been expected with him a long way down the pecking order at Anfield.

The 31-year-old was bought by Roy Hodgson for £4.5million from Juventus last summer but struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Poulsen, who had also been linked with a loan move to Espanyol, started just three league games under Kenny Dalglish and hasn’t featured for the Reds since the Europa League tie against Braga in March.

His lack of action recently cost him his place in the Denmark squad for their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Cole will decide on his future today after holding talks with French champions Lille over a potential season-long loan deal.

Lille are able to offer Champions League football and are keen to snap up Cole after losing Gervinho to Arsenal and Yohan Cabaye to Newcastle.

There is also interest closer to home from Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers and Cole will weigh up his options before making a decision.

      Villa to make Cole move
Villa boss McLeish joins hunt for Reds midfielder

      Last Updated: August 31, 2011 10:36am

Skysports.com understands Aston Villa are planning a late move for Liverpool's out-of-favour midfielder Joe Cole.

The former Chelsea man is being tipped to leave Anfield and had been in talks over a move to French side Lille.

However, Villa could be willing to hijack the move, with the Ligue 1 champions struggling to afford the winger's wages.

Villa have brought in Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan, but are still short of creative options after losing Ashley Young and Stewart Downing.

Premier League rivals Tottenham and QPR are also interested in the 29-year-old, but it seems Alex McLeish is keen on his services.

Cole joined the Reds on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer, but has struggled to impress after making just 20 league appearances.

Full steam ahead for Cole's Lille move as midfielder is allowed to commute from London

Last updated at 10:42 AM on 31st August 2011

French champions Lille are so keen to land Joe Cole they have told the midfielder he can commute from London.

Cole is out of favour at Liverpool and is considering a season-long loan move to a team based just 90 minutes from London on the Eurostar.

Tottenham and QPR have been linked with the 29-year-old but Lille can offer Champions League football after topping Ligue 1 and a deal could be tied up before the window closes.

Cole was then-manager Roy Hodgson's first signing at Liverpool when he agreed a four-year deal last summer after leaving Chelsea as a free agent.

He was sent off on his Premier League debut against Arsenal and managed just three goals in all competitions during the campaign.

The former West Ham trainee has 56 England caps, the 4-1 World Cup defeat by Germany last summer was the last time he represented his country.

Villa have inquired about Joe Cole but as we revealed yesterday he is on verge of 1 year loan deal with Lille. Has now had medical.

Think he should go to France and get a fresh start wonder how much of his wages we will be paying.

Aston Villa in talks with Liverpool over move for Joe Cole

      Aug 31 2011
      By Mat Kendrick

ASTON Villa are exploring the possibility of a bold deadline day swoop for Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole as Alex McLeish strives to add a creative spark to his team.

Cole was expected to sign for French club Lille on a season-long deal, but McLeish could yet hijack the deal before the transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.

The 29-year-old playmaker’s personal terms could be a sticking point with Villa striving to keep their wage bill in check having slashed it so far this summer.

But the claret and blues are talking to their Anfield counterparts about striking a deal for the former West Ham and Chelsea star, who is believed to earn £90,000 per week.

Liverpool were reportedly willing to finance part of Cole’s wages if he was loaned to Lille, but it is unknown whether the Reds would make a similar agreement with a Premier League rival.

Lille, who can offer Cole Champions League football, were prepared to let him continue living in England and commute the 90 minute journey from London to France by Eurostar.

But Villa’s late offer could tempt the England international to try and revive his Premier League career, after a miserable spell on Merseyside following his free transfer from Chelsea last summer.

Cole could see a switch to Villa Park as a chance to kickstart his international career ahead of next summer’s Euro 2012 championships.

His chances of first team football at Liverpool receded further when Kenny Dalglish signed Stewart Downing from Villa for £20 million in the summer.

Downing’s departure and the sale of Ashley Young to Manchester United have left Villa with a shortage of flair players and McLeish wants someone to share the creative burden with new winger Charles N’Zogbia.
