ASTON Villa are exploring the possibility of a bold deadline day swoop for Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole as Alex McLeish strives to add a creative spark to his team.
Cole was expected to sign for French club Lille on a season-long deal, but McLeish could yet hijack the deal before the transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.
The 29-year-old playmaker’s personal terms could be a sticking point with Villa striving to keep their wage bill in check having slashed it so far this summer.
But the claret and blues are talking to their Anfield counterparts about striking a deal for the former West Ham and Chelsea star, who is believed to earn £90,000 per week.
Liverpool were reportedly willing to finance part of Cole’s wages if he was loaned to Lille, but it is unknown whether the Reds would make a similar agreement with a Premier League rival.
Lille, who can offer Cole Champions League football, were prepared to let him continue living in England and commute the 90 minute journey from London to France by Eurostar.
But Villa’s late offer could tempt the England international to try and revive his Premier League career, after a miserable spell on Merseyside following his free transfer from Chelsea last summer.
Cole could see a switch to Villa Park as a chance to kickstart his international career ahead of next summer’s Euro 2012 championships.
His chances of first team football at Liverpool receded further when Kenny Dalglish signed Stewart Downing from Villa for £20 million in the summer.
Downing’s departure and the sale of Ashley Young to Manchester United have left Villa with a shortage of flair players and McLeish wants someone to share the creative burden with new winger Charles N’Zogbia.
