Report: Summer Reading On John Henry’s Liverpool, Discretion & Baseball
      Jun 07, 2011 06:57:39 pm

Don't know if this can go in the 'owner thread"

It’s summer, there’s no football and rumours are flying from one end of Europe to the other regarding managerial changes and player transfers. While many clubs feign outrage at the deals that tabloids throw at them, hoping that something sticks – “Total lies!” Inter’s technical director Marco Branca called reports that he was negotiating to bring Kaka back to Milan – there is no reply from Liverpool FC to any of the audacious transactions to which they have been attached. That’s down to the fact, as Kenny Dalglish will tell you, that the club has recommitted themselves to conducting business in the ‘Liverpool Way’.

New owner John Henry and his Anfield lieutenant, Tom Werner, have acknowledged their unfamiliarity with Reds’ traditions, asking for time to learn the local customs and pledging to properly respect them when they do, but discretion is one characteristic that they have long had in common with Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. As we first saw with Roy Hodgson’s continued employment, then Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll’s signings, and finally with the long-awaited removal of caretaker from King Kenny’s job title, Fenway Sports Group will say nothing if they can and the absolute bare minimum if they must about any ongoing business.

Thus, we have no idea whatsoever whether Damien Comolli truly has offered Sunderland wunderkind Jordan Henderson 80,000/week or if he is indeed attempting to wrest Bojan Krkic away from Barcelona. For all we know, he may be on the verge of bringing Kaka to Liverpool. After all, the Brazilian’s mother did tweet that her son would be bringing her to London this summer. Maybe she misunderstood. The two cities both start with L…

Relax, relax. I’m just throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks.

Unlike Tom Hicks, who rashly attempted to take over Corinthians, then blew $250 million on Alex Rodriguez, hoping that he would make the already home run happy Texas Rangers into champions, abandoned to bankruptcy his one success, the Stanley Cup winning Dallas Stars in a vain attempt to meet the interest payments on Liverpool and, finally, convinced a Texas judge to intervene in the High Court’s ruling on the LFC sale because he wouldn’t realise a profit - unlike all that – John Henry doesn’t act foolishly or impulsively. He carefully considers his options, takes advice where he can find it, then keeps his own counsel until his decision is made and his plans have been put into motion.

That’s exactly the type of owner that any club, in any sport, would want. Unfortunately, with no matches on tap to fill in the empty summer hours, Liverpool’s silence quickly becomes excruciatingly boring.  So, if you’re looking for some entertainment until LFC finally announces the Kaka signing, you might consider repaying John Henry’s rescue of the Reds by taking a passing interest in his other venture, the Boston Red Sox.  They are currently in a heated American League East battle with their ancient rivals, the New York Yankees, for supremacy in the American League East Division.

      Hah! Good post....but....

not long after I moved to Canada 20 years ago I tried to get into baseball but couldn't manage it.

I watched one game on TV and for about 5 minutes NOTHING happened. Every time the pitcher finished wiping the ball on his groin, adjusting his cap, stretching his neck, looking all around then FINALLY started his windup to throw the guy on 1st base started to edge forward so the pitcher turned towards him, feigning to throw to get him out so, of course, the runner stepped back to the base and EVERYTHING stopped.

So, this EXACT action, or lack of, was repeated 4 or 5 times. It was so mind numbingly boring that even the TV crew started losing interest and the director started picking up shots of women and celebrities in the stands.

Suddenly we cut back to the "action" only to find we had missed the actual pitch, although it was hard to tell because there was no obvious change in players' positions or sounds from the crowd. (Who, by the way, spend the whole 3 hours eating, drinking, talking on the phone, wandering about, etc. safe in the knowledge that they are rarely going to actually miss anything important)

Then the commentator came out with this all-time classic remark; "Sorry about that folks but you didn't miss anything...it was a no-hit". 'kin hilarious!

Someone once said of baseball: "If it were any slower they'd call it farming." Truer words were never spoken. For me, even when something is actually happening in baseball it is still deadly dull. Grown men all dressed up in their tight "uniforms" and running around a circle. Wow!

So, if you don't mind, I'll stick to watching paint dry when I miss the football...it is far more interesting.
