      LulzSec to disband

LulzSec says it is to disband
Hacking organisation announces move on Twitter after attacks on entertainment company and law enforcement agency sites

The LulzSec hacking group, which has sabotaged a trail of websites over the last two months including attacks on law enforcement agencies and the release of private data, has said it is dissolving itself.

The group made the announcement through its Twitter account on Saturday. It gave no reason for the disbandment, which analysts say could be a sign of nerves in the face of law enforcement investigations.

Rival hackers have also released information they say could point to the identities of the six-member group.

LulzSec claimed hacks on major entertainment companies, FBI partner organisations, the CIA, the US senate and a pornography website.

Kevin Mitnick, a security consultant and former hacker, said the group had probably concluded that the more it kept up its activities, the greater the chance was that a member would make a mistake enabling the authorities to catch them.

LulzSec has inspired copycat groups around the world, he said, meaning similar attacks are likely to continue. "They can sit back and watch the mayhem and not risk being captured," he added.

As a parting shot, LulzSec released documents and login information apparently gleaned from gaming websites and corporate servers.

The largest group of documents – 338 files – appears to be internal documents from AT&T, detailing its building of a new wireless broadband network in the US. The network is set to go live this summer. A spokesman for the phone company could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the documents.

On Friday, a LulzSec member told AP the group was sitting on at least five gigabytes of government and law enforcement data from across the world, which it planned to release in the next three weeks. Saturday's release was less than one-tenth of that size.

In an unusual strategy for a hacker group, LulzSec has sought publicity and conducted a conversation with the public through its Twitter account.

Observers believe it is an offshoot of Anonymous, a larger, more loosely-organised group that attempts to mobilise hackers for attacks on targets it considers immoral, such as oppressive Middle Eastern governments and opponents of WikiLeaks.

LulzSec, in contrast, attacked anyone it could for "the lulz" – internet jargon for laughs.

      Very poor journalism indeed.

LulzSec have said nothing of the sort, and they're nothing to do with Anonymous.

LulzSec took down 4chan's /b/ forum and used 50% of the users there as a Botnet to down other websites. Anonymous mostly hail from 4chan. You do the maths.

Actually, LulzSec and Anonymous do have ties. Members of LulzSec were former members of Anonymous. Which probably resulted in them doing some attacks on each other. However, it seems since a few days ago they have simply disbanded because things got too hot for them after one of their members was arrested and they were getting this much publicity, only to join forces again with Anonymous for their common goal #AntiSec. LulzSec promoting Anonymous on their twitter right after their disbandment statement seems to confirm that.

From what I understand they only left Anonymous in the first place because they felt it should be more about AntiSec, not about targetting organisations or whatever because Anonymous doesn't like them or disagrees with them. So their goal was to bring AntiSec back into the spotlight again.

yeah fair enough, seems they've achieved that.  surely having a member arrested would have played a part in deciding to go a little more underground too, they've got enough spotlight and lulzsecitaly and lulzsecbrazil have now formed so the organisation isn't entirely dead just shifted somewhat.

Maybe a couple of members, but collectively - as a group - they have nothing to do with Anon.

Why would they take down /b/ (Anon's main fanbase & home) if they're former members? They wouldn't.

Why not? They left Anonymous. Hacker groups have done attacks for less reasons. Some say it was just a prank even. Who knows really what exactly went on between them at that time. LulzSec actually consisted of about 6 members by the way. Topiary is a former prominent member of Anonymous. And Sabu is also a former member of Anonymous. And I highly doubt the other members weren't connected to Anonymous whatsoever. In this document, which contains converations from their IRC channel, Topiary mentions some of the other members. One of them, Avunit, obviously is also at least a former Anonymous member just by the look of his twitter. And some of the others are supposed to be too. And LulzSec anounced their cooperation with Anonymous for AntiSec aswell. And called them their brothers, and promoted their IRC channel etc. on twitter. Then there's Anonymous themselfs on twitter who have pretty much implied that LulzSec is Anonymous, that they came from them and now have returned.

Doesn't seem to me that they have nothing to do with Anonymous.
