      Android Appreciation Thread
      Jul 27, 2011 04:10:23 pm

I feel there's a bit of a bias towards the iPhone considering there's a thread especially for it. So why not Android? ;)

Use this thread to talk about what Android phone you've got, what apps are a must have. ;D

Me I've got a Samsung Galaxy S II, which is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

      Must have apps/games for me:

      Angry Birds

      Tank Hero

      IMDB

      Bump

      Color Flashlight

      Viber

      Facebook and Twitter (preinstalled)

I am looking at the Droid by Motorolla. I want it to be global ready so when I travel the phone will be ready. I have a Blackberry Storm2 right now. So, I want phone to be similar. I have heard only good things about Android phones so that is why I am switching over.

I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy or the HTC desire or the HTC incredible.

I haven't got an android, but those are the best ones my friends have

The best thing about an android though, is that it's open source unlike the apple iPhone.

      It is an operating system.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications.[7][8] Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005.[9] Android's mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android's development and release.[10][11] The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android.[12] Android was listed as the best-selling Smartphone platform world-wide in Q4 2010 by Canalys.[13][14]

Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently more than 250,000 apps available for Android.[15][16] Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.[17]

The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 80 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.[18][19] Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.[20]

The Android open-source software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java-based, object-oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation. Libraries written in C include the surface manager, OpenCore[21] media framework, SQLite relational database management system, OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics API, WebKit layout engine, SGL graphics engine, SSL, and Bionic libc.

Dad has the Samsung galaxy s2, it is bloody awesome, much better then the i phone 4 IMO, he had both and i definitely think the samsung is a quicker smarter phone.

Diversion and Cookie Dozer will kill a fair few hours.

If you want an impossible game to try and play then get Craniati Enigma

Twisted Arrows isn't a bad one either.

I love my Google Nexus S.

      Must have app -

Adidas mi coach, free running tracker, giving you time, GPS distance calculation, real-time speed checks, k / mile splits, post-run speed analysis.  Brilliant.  This app is the main reason I bought a smart phone, it saved me buying a Garmin.

      Also...
Lew Rockwell app, great news / comment app from an an-cap perspective :)
Reason app, US news and analysis from a libertarian perspective

I want to get a live-scores app for the start of the season, but there are so many to choose from...

HTC's have decent Internet connection - it matters more on what provider you have. Orange and T-mobile are the best for internet IMO.

Hard to find a pin point number, but it's in well of excess of 100,000 apps on the android system; that's a conservative figure too.

There's around 350,000 apps on the IPhone but most of the "essential" and "best" apps are on both markets.

Never had O2 - some say it's pretty good - others say its pretty poor. Vodafone is the worse one IMO. Shocking network.

I just got my first smartphone this week. I got the LG Optimus V through Virgin Wireless. It runs Android 2.2.  I f***in' LOVE ANDROID.

It is so user friendly and easy to use. Not too mention a load of great Apps. Google apps run seamless with Android and I have 0 complaints about it. My Phone is a low end smartphone but it has everything the top end phones have. The only thing it doesnt have is Tethering/Hot Spotting. But It does have 3g, Wifi, a 3.2mp Cam good battery, nice size, brilliant screen and it was only $149.00. Plus my current plan which runs on the Sprint network has Unlimited, Data,Web,Email and Text and includes 1200 minutes. No contract. Plus for an add'l 5 bucks a month I could go to unlimited minutes.
