Don't know about Degen too soon, but Carragher apart, I think Finnan was our best defensive right back.  However he didn't cut the mustard in the attacking stakes and I think Rafa wants a bit more attacking threat from the right back slot.

I hope Arbeloa doesn't think he's got an easy ride now though.  He has been sh*t all season and he has got a lot of improving to do to match Finnan.

I want Darby snapping at Arbeloa's heels... I think Arbeloa has to get his head in gear again (big improvement vs Villa)... he still has a lot to prove... getting into the Spanish squad means jack sh*te to us if he can't deliver the goods in OUR red shirt... I am sure he will come good... him and Doss are so very critical to Rafa's game plan this season.

Shame to see Finnan go, but as I always say the good players need to play and I hope Espanyol give him the credit he deserves as I doubt Rafa would have this season with the new signings.

Cheers for the good times mate, especially in the big games ;D

      Buena suerte en España!

Im still wondering if arbeloa is unsettled. I mean after the rumour about him wanting to go i havent read quotes from him denying it and last season he started as our best player. Looks a completely different person now.

He's had a decent start so far though and seems settled but he's a quiet type I guess.

I think he never really got the praise he deserved but i think thats a good thing because he did'nt have anything go to his head and meant he could just fully focus on the game.

Steve Finnan, a solid player who always gave his best and wether we shall miss him depends on Arbeloa and if true that he is finding the rain not to his liking then we may have made a mistake in letting Finnan go, going to Spain may suit him and rather than see him at Villa I for one think he picked the right country to ply his trade....

I am very very surprised that he has been off loaded as I can't fault his Liverpool career.  Like most of have said MR consistent.  When we have been taught by Rafa to always have options then Finnan was an excellent defensive RB option.  I hope we have recieved more than the 1m speculated as that is day light robbery.

what you on about jd? ???
Stephen John Finnan (born 24 April 1976) is an Irish international football player who currently plays for Espanyol at right back. He is the only player to have played in the World Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup, all four levels of English League football, the English Conference and shortly in La Liga with Espanyol. :rasp:
In the summer of 2003 Finnan found himself courted by many of England's top clubs and eventually joined Liverpool for a fee of £3.5m. The incumbent right back, Jamie Carragher, greeted his arrival with the warning "If Steve gets ahead of me in the team then I'll just have to find out where he lives and I'll send the boys round." :lmao:

Nice challenge for the lad at his age.

Amazingly consistent for us in Rafa's first 3 years. Not so good last year, and maybe the time was right to move on.

He gets to live in Barcelona. Can't be bad, eh?
