Hillsborough: Final Anfield memorial service in April
The final Anfield memorial service to remember 96 football fans who died at Hillsborough will take place in April.

Memorial services have been held at Liverpool's stadium in most of the 26 years since the disaster.

Hillsborough families have agreed that this year's service - on the 27th anniversary - will be the final one.

The coroner at the inquests into the fatal crush on 15 April 1989 at the Sheffield stadium will start summing up 279 days' evidence later this month.

The decision to end the Anfield services was made by the Hillsborough Families Support Group (HFSG) following consultation with the relatives of those who died.

On Tuesday, Coroner Lord Justice Goldring adjourned the inquests, being held in Warrington, Cheshire, until 25 January when he expects to summarise the evidence for the jury.

Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the HFSG, said: "The 96 will never be forgotten. This final memorial service will provide the families with some closure."

Mrs Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James died in the disaster, added: "The HFSG would like to thank everyone for all the support the families have received over the past 27 years and all those people who have attended the service at Anfield each year.

"We hope that the public and fans respect the decision of the HFSG and will continue to remember the 96 in their own, perhaps more private, way."

In the days after the disaster, Anfield became the focus of grief on Merseyside.

A carpet of flowers was laid over the pitch and a chain of football scarves stretched from the stadium, across the city's Stanley Park and to Goodison Park, home of local rivals Everton.

On the first anniversary the club unveiled its permanent memorial to the 96 - a 10-tonne granite block inscribed with the names of the victims alongside an eternal flame.

Since then bereaved families, survivors, Liverpool players and managers have attended the annual service at the ground.

The service has been a very public show of remembrance - but also of the support shown to those affected by the disaster.

More recently it has also helped keep the bereaved families' campaign in the public eye.

Margaret Aspinall is right when she used the word 'closure', we all at some point need to move on but never forget.

      I saw this earlier.

With the end of the Inquests coming up, I think it's the right course to take.

Obviously the Hillsbourgh Memorial will still be at the ground for people to pay their respects.

what a struggle for recognition the families have had and finally after close to 27 years the feel they are close to getting the Truth.
I hope what happens next gives them what they have been fighting for and that this years service can also be a celebration because we should celebrate these wonderful people as well as showing respect for those who had their lives taken from them

Just seen this, given they've requested no more donations and this is the last memorial service I guess they feel they can start to move on.

No doubt the fact there is finally an inquest has played a part, 27 years and now I think the whole country accepts there was a cover up and justice wasn't served at the time.

I was talking about this being the last Service to one of my clients yesterday and she was surprised that it was 27 years ago.  We got onto the lies and cover ups, the new Inquests and the reaction when the Independent Panel released it's findings in 2012.

Before I knew it she was in tears and apologising for getting so upset, turns out she was a teacher in Runcorn at the time and Thomas A Howard was one of her pupils and she had to give up teaching as a result due to the grief.

We all remember those who died and the family and friends they left behind but forget those on the fringes whose lives were also effected and I hope for her sake I haven't opened up old wounds that clearly have never healed, despite trying her best to forget them.

A reminder to us all that it wasn't just the 96 people who died affected, but their thousands of friends and family - and that's before we even get on to those who were there that day and witnessed the scenes.

Didnt want to ask in the "RIP 96" thread, but what are the broadcasting issues that restrict LFC.tv from showing the full service live?

It's any reporting or discussing the ongoing Inquests mate.  The Attorney General made it a Contempt of Court offense before they started so anything that the speakers say about them has to be off air.

watched an awful lot of LFC TV today. Getting to know more about the names behind the numbers. So many people are still traumatised by this. Wonderful stories about childhood memories and growing up, first loves, first jobs first holidays abroad just stories of good people who's only ambition that day was to go and cheer their beloved Reds something we have all done many times.
