      IP Spoofing, Techy Help.
      Aug 28, 2011 05:06:17 pm
Now as some of you are aware.. I was banned for breaking the forum rules by supposedly creating another account to circumvent a ban.

Well I can put my hand on heart and say with %100 conviction that wasn't the case, I even thought at one point that myself Macedonian_Red and Devil Hunter were 3 different users when we were all logged in at the same time.

That was until JD showed myself a screent shot of Devil Hunter logged in under my IP.

Now the techy help that I need is simple.

Ever since the Devil Hunter incident my laptop connection does strange things such as this.

notice how I have no connetion to the net in the bottom right hand corner and that the page in my second tab obviously wouldn't load up because of it. Then look at what it says in the box in the middle, there are no other computers in my house on this network besides the ps3 which was turned off at the time

Then it keeps on doing this too almost every time I load a page.

Now I looked on google and thought this was just a firefox problem, until I loaded Google Chrome

Then this happens almost every time I load a page.

So I guess what I am asking is, why is my laptop playing up ever since Devil Hunter spoofed my IP ?.

Easiest way to find out just what is happening is to download Network Magic (its free for 7 days ) It will tell you and visually show you just who, what and when anyone is connected to your network.  http://www.purenetworks.com/

You can't buy it over here, but you can use the trial version. If decide to try it and want to keep it PM me

Tut, its a sick jokes site ha ha.

Still need some advice on this, need to know if I've been compromised, running panda security and I've run spy bot and both don't show anything.

One thing I forgot to mention too, is that ever since all this sh*t has happened, when I put football manager on or stream video, my laptop gets very hot and just shuts itself down.

Never used to do any of the above until the Devil Hunter account appeared.

Not entirely related but I've just had to buy a lappy off fleabay with a smashed screen to replace mine because my lappy was shutting itself down when I played video. Turned out to be the graphics chip on the motherboard was shot.

Another reason for a laptop to shut down is the cooler vent inside by the fan is full of dust which stops the processor cooling down properly so it shuts down so it doesn't explode.

As regards the IP spoofing Daz, as far as I'm aware if someone spoofs your IP then all they do is show up as you on the internet. It shouldn't have any effect on your home network. If they show up on your home network then you have a major issue because somehow they've integrated their ghost machine into your network on a permanent basis or at least a basis of their choosing.

Strange sh*te whichever way it's happening.

Its got me perplexed mate, I'm not tech savvy with computers other than turning them on and typing, but surely its not just coincidence that all this has started since the Devil Hunter debacle.

Now to be honest I thought it was just firefox playing up or the summer heat making the laptop run hot until JD showed me Devil Hunter logged in on my IP and ever since then with knowing I wasn't Devil Hunter its got me thinking its all to do with that.

      Good luck though.

So if I have a brother/relative/friend on the same laptop signed in to his account sharing the same IP address of course they'll presume it's the same person?

Yes mate, but if you inform JD that is the case beforehand and that your relative/friend has an account on here, then that would be taken into consideration I'd imagine.

That is awkward. I'm no expert on these IP addresses but do they change in different locations/when using different broadband hubs or is it just different devices?

You're given an IP address when you sign up to a broadband account. It can change but often doesn't. If the same IP address is used by different usernames then it gets suspicious but there can be a good reason such as a workplace full of reds or a house full of reds. I don't suspect the mods would be that bothered about IP addresses unless there is a banning issue and a new account created.

There's another case that I've just thought of which is 'sock puppets' on the internet. You could for example have 2 accounts/usernames on 2 separate browsers and one username could argue with the other with a 'straw man' argument so that the original username is proven correct-the other username could admit defeat to strengthen the winning argument.

Alternatively, a user could keep giving positives to the other user, or keep praising the other user's posts.

So this is another reason why IP addresses need monitoring within a forum.

Those errors happen with me all the time.

The first one means that someone else is on your connection and Windows has detected that they have the same IP as you - it then fixes it in a split second usually.

The second one isn't actually your connection resetting, it's just a generic Firefox error. Means you need to refresh the page as the data you were trying to send to the server was interrupted.

Third, not sure. Don't use Chrome.

For the record, an IP is pretty much impossible to duplicate. I haven't known any instances of it - ever.

RLB, have you tried a virus scan?

Apparently from what i've read its pretty easy to spoof an IP and even easier to trace it, plus where as you & others may have doubts, I know for certain its been spoofed as I never was Devil Hunter so for that user name to show my IP adress in just one log in, is a little bit fishy don't you think ?

I've done a virus check & ran spybot mate, but alls come back clear, I've updated everything too, but keep getting the same faults.

You can't "spoof" an IP unless you have taken over that computer.

That's why firewalls and ID packets were invented.

      Well I've read differently.
