Echo linkMICK JONES, the lead guitarist of The Clash, has thrown his weight behind the Don’t Buy The Sun event, which will take place on Saturday.
The concert is also a tribute to 18-year-old James McVey, who died after being attacked outside a party in Walton.
Mick, who went on to form the band Big Audio Dynamite and has recently played with Gorillaz, said: “When The Farm asked me to play this gig I knew I had to do it. We played the Anfield concert for the Hillsborough families, and it’s a campaign I feel very strongly about. I wont buy The Sun and I think it’s great that people in Liverpool still don’t. You have to stand up for what you believe in.
“I’ve always felt a strong affinity with Liverpool, and I feel privileged that people in the city have almost adopted me. I’ve got a lot of friends in Liverpool – particularly The Farm and Pete Wylie. So I’ll be playing some collaborations with them on the night, which I’m looking forward to.”
There is a rumour that Mick will also play some Clash songs.
He said: “I don’t want to ruin any surprises but, yes, there will be a few familiar songs in there. It should be a good night, and I hope people come down to support such a good cause.”
The concert will take place at the Olympia, on West Derby Road, on Saturday. Proceeds will go to the Fazakerley 9 charity, which aims to spruce up Hawksmoor Park where James regularly played football.

THE Don’t Buy the Sun concert will also feature Pete Wylie, The Farm, John Power, James Dean Bradfield, Ian Prowse, The Tea Street Band and The Sums. MP Tom Watson will speak at the event.
Peter Hooton, lead singer of The Farm who is one of the organisers, said: "Lots of groups and artistes have lent their support to this campaign and very worthy cause. I am really pleased the MP Tom Watson will be there on the night as he has mounted a magnificent campaign to expose the practices of certain newspapers, something the people of Merseyside have been aware of for some time."
Jamie McVey, James’s dad, added "This is two tragedies coming together with a positive outcome. We know the truth is out there and we will not stop until everybody knows it."
