L.F.C Centre Halves Who Played For England
      Sep 12, 2011 09:50:33 am
I need help here ,in my memory I have a notion that we had 3 players on our books at the same time  who had played for England as Centre Half. Now I know with certainty that 2 of them were Bill Jones and Laurie Hughes, now the problem is with the 3rd one I have got 2 names in my mind one is Phil Taylor or could it have been  Bob Paisley. This has been puzzling me for a while so I hope someone can come up with the answer.

Can't really help mate, but Paisley was a tiny bloke (hard tackler so I have been told) but probably a bit too small for Centre Half.

      Phil Taylor

      Wartime games/goals: 96 / 24
      LFC league games/goals: 312 / 32

      Bob Paisley

No help at all really I know, but from those stats maybe Paisley never played for England?

Thanks for the info s@int but I actually saw Bob Paisley and Phil Taylor play for the reds many many times. You could be right regarding Bob not playing for England but Phil played for England Schoolboys,England B and the full England team.I am beginning to think it could of been Phil Taylor who was the third man to play at centre half for England.

Hiya Billy hows things down under ?
I've been doing some research on your behalf mate and Along with what the Saint says Paisley apparently never played for England.
Taylor played 3 England games in 1947 and was still on the books with the Reds when Hughes and Jones made their debuts for England in 1950.

I never saw Bob play, but I stood beside him for about 5 mins. My friends and I needed tickets for a match (think it was the UEFA cup final.) We had been going regularly for a while but had never needed tickets before, so before one game we searched for the ticket office.

Seeing a glass building we walked towards the door to see if it was the right one. Infront of me was a little bloke with curly hair (Elton Welsby off Kick off) and as he walked through the door.... so did I. My b***ard mates just stopped outside laughing.

On entering I was met by all the Liverpool team and their families, fully dressed in smart suites etc. So I can't claim I still thought it was the ticket office, but to the left there was a cubicle with a queue of people infront of it. Thinking it would give me extra time to look at our players I went to the back of the queue and tried to look as if I belonged there.(with my scarf, jeans and scruffy coat)

Thats when Bob came over and stood leaning against the wall about two feet from me waiting patiently for his turn. I never plucked up the courage to speak to him (something I have always regretted) but when my turn came at the window, the girl just shouted for the security and I was roughly escorted from Bob's presence and the players lounge(?)

I could have reached out and touched him..... my moment of glory.

Hello Steve, thanks for your input,I am now aware that Bob never played for England but for some reason I have got this thing in my mind that we had 3 centre halves on our books who were capped by England. If I come up with the answer I will let you know.Extra bit of trivia I do know that we supplied 3 international goalkeepers on the one day, this was passed down to me by my old man many many years ago.
