Schalke chief 'optimisic' forward will pen new deal

Schalke forward Jefferson Farfan is considering the offer of a new deal which would keep him at the Veltins-Arena until June 2015, says chairman Clemens Tonnies.

The Peru international, who joined the Bundesliga club for around £8million from PSV Eindhoven in 2008, is out of contract next summer.

Schalke have offered Farfan a new three-year contract and are reportedly expecting a decision from the 26-year-old by the end of October.

Tonnies told BILD: "We have offered Jefferson Farfan the opportunity to remain a player at our club.

"We have handed him a proposal of a new contract. That would last until June 2015.

"Thus far he has not made a decision. I am, however, very very optimistic that Jefferson Farfan will stay on as a player of Schalke 04 and sign a new deal with our club."

Farfan, who has established himself as a first-team regular at Schalke, was linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus during the summer transfer window.

However, if we are talking about realistic and affordable targets, Jefferson Farfan could be our best option ... He is turning 27 next month, and has an outstanding goalscoring and assists record both in the Eredivisie and the Bundesliga ... His playing characteristics are exactly what we need at the right side of our attack at the moment: Excellent pace, great technique and ability to beat defenders, and above average tactical awareness, proved by the big number of assists at Schalke (44 in 129 matches) ... Back on topic, Farfan is lightweight and way too inconsistent and a bit of a troublemaker as well, hence the fact his international career is probably over.

Ditto, though I thought 'Dumb & Dumber' was brilliant. I suppose sharing the limelight with Jeff Daniels helped there though.

Not by the teams he plays for, maybe by the opposition. Suarez sometimes crosses the line because he's passionate and wants to win. While there's other trouble makers who just have a big ego and put themselfs above the team they're playing for. The reason why Farfan could be seen as a trouble maker is because inbetween 2 World Cup qualification games for the national team of Peru Farfan and Pizarro took part in smuggling alcohol and women into the player hotel and having a party. For many countries that would mean the end of his career on that level, but since he's the best player for Peru they let him and Pizarro back eventually.

A good option to have, especially at the price that he will be available in January ... A pacey wide forward, with above average technique and ability to beat defenders ...

I have a soft spot for Schalke so I've seen him play quite a lot, and while I do agree he's talented and could be a useful option in the squad, I believe he blows hot and cold too much, not the most consistent player. I do think we should have signed another winger, so come January if he's available for a decent price maybe I'd agree he could be a decent option. I'd be happier if we could target better players though.
