International rules Ireland (GAA) V Australia (Aussie rules)
      Oct 11, 2011 05:31:10 pm
Ireland will play Australia in games in the Etihad Stadium Melbourne, on October 28 at 7.45pm (Australian time) and the Metricon Stadium in Gold Coast on November 4 at 7.45pm (Australian time. Its the 13th series between the2 nations in this hybrid of the 2 national football codes

Ireland have named a mere 18 man squad (5 more will be added after rounds of club championships are completed) Squad in full

      Captain: Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)
      Vice Captain: Ciarán McKeever (Armagh)
      Emmet Bolton (Kildare)
      Eoin Cadogan (Cork)
      Kieran Donaghy (Kerry)
      Leighton Glynn (Wicklow)
      Finian Hanley (Galway)
      Pearse Hanley (Mayo/Brisbane Lions)
      Darren Hughes (Monaghan)
      Tadgh Kennelly (Kerry/Sydney Swans)
      Steven Mc Donnell (Armagh)
      Kevin McKernan (Down)
      Joe McMahon (Tyrone)
      Neil McGee (Donegal)
      Michael Murphy (Donegal)
      Darran O’Sullivan (Kerry)
      Kevin Reilly (Meath)
      Aidan Walsh (Cork)

Some big name omissions but not a bad squad. A few lads who are or have played in Australia and some lads who will probably be more suited to this game then GAA.

I just hope its the spectacle it can be and the gayed up version

They mix the rules of both codes in to a set of hybrid rules and use the round ball. They are fairly similar games really bar a few glaring differences

Interesting.  They should both move to the international code then, may get more widespread appeal.

GAA is still amateur, probably always will be so thats a big stumbling block. Plus the 2 sets of administrators are against any proper physicality or off the ball stuff, that was perhaps the biggest appeal originally

Would like us to get stuck in on the physical side. Watched it a few times and if we don't we'll just run out of legs in a straight eight

Melbourne and Gold Coast are about 900 miles south and north respectively. So no :D

Would love to attend one though in the future. Fascinating game and very exciting.

      Australia 36 Ireland 80

Joe Mangle, Kylie, Jason Donovan, Alf from home and away, Rolf Harris, Skippy, Fosters, Crocadile Dundee, Castlemaine xxxx, Chopper, Greg Norman. your boys took one hell of a beating!!!

Very one sided, this should never happen to Australia as its practically the rules of Aussie rules using a GAA football and Australia are pro the GAA lads are 100% amateur. Very strange. Billiant result for Ireland

Having lived with county players, I can tell you that isen't true. They are re-inbursed for expences very generously. As for even club managers, getting €200 a training session for "expences". god only knows what County managers get. I have heard stories of one particular manager's salary that I would believe.

Good result for the Irish lads. Shame that this test got all the neagtive attention over the alst few years.

Im sure lads get expenses for petrol etc and why not

Professional sports men are paid a weekly wage to play the game and train every day and in a lot of cases twice a day. Most of our lads to a day job or college and train maybe 3 nights a week.

Please dont make out that theres any comparison between pro and what GAA players are

Must all so be pointed out that the cream of players were not in the Irish squad which adds to the victory

Tough call on whether they represent club or country. Disgrace that they have to choose. Surely the International Rules could have been delayed.

I love how the AFL players are the biggest pansies when they're playing in the AFL but when it's against the Irish they act like thugs.

Piss off you idiots and play the game.

      Bunch of idiots.

I mean the Irish weren't saints themselves but most of their reactions were provoked. The AFL boys looked to knock everyone down when they could.

Well done to Ireland. I like watching International Rules and this time was no different.

When I was at High School (1990 ish), there was an old Irish RE teacher there by the name of Mrs Byrne. As soon as she heard my surname, Brosnan, she said that it was a famous name in Gaelic Football. Anyone vouch for that?

Yup. Aussies see this as just an exhibition to go out and knock some heads, don't even care about the result. I like some biff of course, but they take it too far.

Well done Ireland for actually playing the game, got the result they deserved.
