From what I've read over here, he's a bit like Coady. Not the flashiest, but moves the ball around and works hard. Can't wait to see him play more than the brief times I've seen him for the U-17s.

Played a belter of a pass for the winner in the u-18s against United today. First time, picked out Quirk who played a clever ball through for Dunn who finished it off. Pelosi was probably the best player on the pitch today.

Yanks Abroad: For Pelosi, Progress at Liverpool Takes a Knock in the Knee
      By BRIAN SCIARETTA

After signing with Liverpool last fall and enjoying strong performances within the club’s youth levels, Marc Pelosi is on the road to recovery after sustaining a knee injury last weekend(EDIT - THIS STORY WAS WRITTEN IN FEBRUARY).

Pelosi, 17, is widely regarded as one of the top teenage American prospects after he was the captain of the United States U-17 World Cup team last year. In November, Pelosi followed his fellow American prospect Villyan Bijev and signed with Liverpool and began playing with the club’s under-18 and reserve teams.

Last weekend, however, Pelosi’s rise with the Reds suffered a setback in training when his foot was planted during a scrimmage and a defender slid and hit his knee from the side. Pelosi’s knee buckled and at first a serious injury was suspected.

Scans would later reveal a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament, which does not require surgery but will keep Pelosi out for two months. Despite the injury, Pelosi remains upbeat and thankful that the injury was not worse.

“It’s probably the worst injury of my career but it could have been worse,” he said in a telephone interview. “Obviously it’s horrible to get injured but that’s just part of football. There’s no player that never gets injured. I just look forward from here. Obviously I’m down but I just have to stay positive and work hard in therapy and in the gym to get stronger.”

Before the injury, however, the left-footed Pelosi had been playing well at both left back and in the midfield — two positions he says he likes equally. He was a regular in training with Liverpool’s reserve team but had also played with the U-18 team to get games before his work permit was secured. Next year he is expecting to be with the reserve team full-time.

While he is off to a strong start at Liverpool, the decision to sign with the five-time European champions as a teenager was not an easy one. As one of the top young American players, he had options ranging from college to Major League Soccer to a wide range of European clubs.

A club like Liverpool also presented the challenge of having a world-class first team that is difficult to break into for young players. In the end, however, Liverpool was able to sign Pelosi in large part because of its storied history and its willingness to sign him without a trial.

“I was going to go to U.C.L.A.,” Pelosi said. “I had offers from M.L.S and a few other teams in Europe. It was a tough decision but with Liverpool being one of the top teams in the world with an incredible history, I heard a lot of good things about their youth teams so I thought it’d be a good place to develop.

“Obviously their first team is really good and everyone wants to break through to that level. I’m going to try my best for that but it’s always good to start at a team at the top because there is always somewhere else to go after that.”

Once Pelosi recovers from his injury, Liverpool will not be the only team happy to have him back. He is also expected to be a big part of the United States U-20 team as it moves toward next year’s World Cup in Turkey.

Pelosi was invited by U-20 Coach Tab Ramos for the first camp of 2012 last month but Liverpool did not want to release him because he was still adjusting to the club.

“The next step for me is probably the U-20s with Tab Ramos as the new coach,” Pelosi said. “I’ve met him once before. I think he’s going to be a really good coach. Hopefully in the summer I’ll be with them for a camp soon.“

Pelosi was born in Germany in 1994 but moved to California when he was 3 years old. He also is a distant relative of the former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, though he has never met her.

Growing up, Pelosi returned to Germany every summer to visit family. While he has an affinity for both countries, he acknowledged that he feels more American and is proud to play for the United States.

Before he moved overseas, Pelosi developed his game primarily at U.S. Soccer’s Bradenton Academy, where he played with many of the other top American players his age. While the program is in the process of undergoing changes, Pelosi has fond memories of the program and his former U-17 coach, Wilmer Cabrera.

“I really miss Bradenton now that I look back on it,” he said. “I saw that as a really good opportunity to grow as a player. If I had just stayed home in California, I would have just trained three or four times a week. At Bradenton I got to train with some of the best players in the U.S. and trained six times a week. That really helped with my development along with living with top soccer players.”

If all goes according to plan with his recovery, Pelosi should be back on the field in April. He will then try to continue his goal of breaking through at Liverpool. The first year has seen its ups and downs, but Pelosi said he was confident that the decision to move to Liverpool has been worth it, and that it will allow him to realize his potential.

“It’s hard in the beginning being on a new team,” he said. “I’ve never been on a new team like this because for my whole life I’ve always been part of U.S. youth teams with the same people. Now I come to Liverpool and everyone is new. But once I got used to it, I thought I was doing well. I was getting better as a player — my passes were quicker. You just learn a lot quicker here and become a better a player.”

Two decades after California teenager Jovan Kirovski became the first American to sign with Manchester United, it's still big news whenever a promising U.S. product lands with one of Europe's iconic clubs.

Marc Pelosi became the latest member of this still-exclusive group last November when he inked a pro deal with English Premier League giant Liverpool.

Pelosi, who turned 18 in June, left his home just outside San Jose last week and headed back to England, where he's participating in his first preseason training camp with the Reds.

"I really like it over there," Pelosi, now fully recovered from a knee injury that sidelined him for the last three months of the 2011-12 season, told us hours before heading to the airport. "I adjusted well, and the fans are crazy -- they're so into the game."

U.S. starlet Marc Pelosi raising expectations at Liverpool FC
talkaloadofbull.com spoke with Pelosi and his coaches at Liverpool and the U.S. national team. Both sets of coaches believe that the midfielder has a bright future.

A few eyebrows were raised when Californian teenager Marc Pelosi joined Liverpool's youth academy last November.

Pelosi declined offers from UCLA and Major League Soccer, the traditional routes for young American prospects, to join the English soccer giant. Many wondered if the then 17-year-old midfielder would make an impact during his stay at Merseyside or fall wayside like the way Anton Perterlin did at for Everton in 2008.

So far, it has been a wise decision by Pelosi. In his first year with the Reds, Pelosi has made quite an impression on the team's coaching staff. Liverpool's Academy Director Frank McParland believes that once Pelosi develops his talent, he can be one of the best central midfielders in the English Premier League.

"He reminds me of Gareth Barry of Man City," McParland told talkaloadofbull.com. "We think he has really high potential."

According to McParland, there aren't many young midfielders who come into English youth academies with the rare combination of size (Pelosi is 6 feet tall), speed and passing ability as the American does. Though the expectations are high for Pelosi at Liverpool, McParland and the team's coaching staff have been careful about bringing him along slowly.

Liverpool ensures that its youth academy players are a close-knit unit despite the fact that all of the players are competing for first team opportunities.

Outside of training and working out together, the players live nearby each other in an apartment building in the city's center. If necessary, they attend high school and continuing education classes together in private classes separate from normal students. They eat at least two meals together every day. It's an insulated environment but it allows the club to protect its young players from the obvious social pressures of playing soccer in England especially in the Merseyside.

Pelosi admits that the adjustment from being a young man in California to a full-time soccer player was tough at first but was thankful for the team's approach.

"When I first moved, it was hard." Pelosi told talkaloadofbull.com. "I didn't have too many friends, but the people at the club really helped in fitting in."

Now, Pelosi sees Liverpool as his second home. His friends, fellow youth teammates, are close-knit but isolated from distractions. It is the trade off for having an opportunity to learn from some of the world's best. Dealing with high expectations is exactly why Pelosi decided to pick Liverpool over MLS and college in the first place.

"I choose Liverpool because it is such a big team and it is well known. I thought it would be a good fit for me," Pelosi explained.

When Pelosi first learned of Liverpool's interest, he admits it was "pretty overwhelming," though he remained focused on impressing in various U.S. youth competitions. While it all happened pretty quickly for him, McParland reveals that the club had scouted Pelosi for almost two years before deciding to sign him. Since he was born in Germany (he lived in the country until he was three years old) and his mother is also German, it was easy to bring Pelosi abroad.

McParland is a big admirer of American talent. He characterizes the typical player from the U.S. as having "exceptional attitudes" and being "physically fit." He believes that there will continue to be an influx of American talent in Premier League though he explains that it is continually difficult to import players due to the United Kingdom's work permit system.

"I think there are lots of players in America who can play here, the problem is the work permits situation," McParland said.

McParland explains that one way that teams are beginning to counteract the UK's strict immigration policies is by affiliating themselves with feeder clubs where the player can stay until he qualifies for a permit or attempt to gain a second nationality. Liverpool is currently doing that with Pelosi's youth compatriot Villyan Bijev, who was unable to secure a work permit upon arriving at the club.

"That's [the work permit system] not going to change so it's progressive clubs who will put players into feeder clubs and that's going to be the best market for the American player," Parland said.

Fortunately for Pelosi, all he has to focus on is his development. One of the perks of joining a club with such a lengthy tradition is being able to learn from some of the best. Before he joined Liverpool in 2011, he long admired the team's icon Steven Gerrard, watching the midfielder from thousands of miles afar on his television back home in the U.S.. Within Pelosi's first few months of being at the club, he immediately had a chance to learn under the legendary midfielder.

Gerrard was recovering from lengthy injury spell and played with Pelosi in the reserves. During certain training sessions, the England captain would speak with the team's young talent, including Pelosi. Adding to Pelosi's surreal experiences, he also had an opportunity to train directly with the first team squad and have brief chats with head coach Brendan Rodgers.

It is that education that Pelosi's U.S. U20 manager Tab Ramos believes will bode well. Ramos hinted that he doesn't expect Pelosi to feature for the U.S. anytime soon as he needs to play in first team games first but likes what he has seen so far.

"We think he's someone who could [eventually] feature for the national team for the next decade," Ramos told talkaloadofbull.com.

Luckily for both the United States and Liverpool, Pelosi makes it pretty clear that he wants to be a part of the first team sooner than later. He isn't interested in searching for a loan move to get extra playing time. He looks at the recent progress of Liverpool starlets Raheem Sterling and Suso and believes he can follow suit into Rodgers' plans.

"Those players were training and playing with us on the reserves and it was just to great to see that you are on their level, you just have keep working hard every day," Pelosi said. "It's everyone's dream to play for the first team."

      Free Kicks

      - One player that left quite an impression at Liverpool is Chivas USA's Juan Agudelo, who is linked with a possible move to Celtic in January. Agudelo spent a two-week training stint with the Reds during the MLS offseason late last year.

McParland didn't get to see much of Agudelo as the striker worked almost exclusively with the first team but got rave reviews from a former first team coach who is now the manager of high-flying West Brom.

"Apparently, I know the first team staff were really impressed with him," McParland said. "They said he was a very good player. I remember [West Brom's head coach] Steve Clarke saying to me that he did really well when he was with the first team."

-McParland envisions Pelosi as an attacking central midfielder. He admits that Pelosi isn't good enough defensively yet to play in a two central midfield system but in a 4-3-3 flanked by a strong holding midfield, he can be very effective.

"I think he's more of an attacking player. He has an intelligence when he has the ball, he sees the pass very well," McParland said.

      http://www.talkaloadofbull.com/en-us/news/1614/americans-abroad/2012/11/28/3560523/us-starlet-marc-pelosi-raising-expectations-at-liverpool-fc

Sh*t source, but a decent article about Pelosi. The Barry comparison is odd, but I found the bit about him being an attacking mid interesting. I've not been able to see to much of the youth team this season, so I have no idea how he's doing. Interesting bit about getting work permits as well.

Any thing on the official  on this?

Liverpool FC promotes Sunnyvale teen Marc Pelosi for Europa League

Liverpool FC has promoted Sunnyvale teenager Marc Pelosi to its A team for Europa League competition.

The promising Bay Area midfielder will join the Reds' main squad when Liverpool travels to Russia's Zenit St. Petersburg in the round of 32 next week. Pelosi, 18, was one of three players Liverpool picked from its under-21 team.

Pelosi has enjoyed a successful season in his second year with the famed English Premier League club. The former De Anza Force player shined in the under-19 Next Generation Series, a youth tournament for top European teams.

Because of the timing Pelosi won't join the U.S. under-20 team in Mexico next week for CONCACAF qualifying for the World Cup. Liverpool didn't release the player for a national team assignment.

U.S. coach Tab Ramos, however, suggested Friday there still is a chance to get Pelosi.

"At this point, I wouldn't want to say that that's a closed door, but it's something that we may work on that at the end of the day, may not make any sense for Marc," Ramos said on a conference call with reporters. "We'll keep working on it for the next couple of days, and we're happy with his development. We feel that Marc is going to be an important player for the national team."

Saw this reported last night. Yep, it is official. He's listed on the squad list on UEFA.com and has been given No. 44 to wear in the competition: http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2013/clubs/club=7889/index.html

I was under the impression that u21's didn't have to be registered for the competition, hence why the likes of Raheem, Morgan, Suso, Wisdom etc all have stars next to their names on the UEFA website.

Broken leg in the 90th minute.
Just when the lad was nailing down a spot as one of the attacking mids.

      Stay strong.

That's gotta be the most soul destroying injury to get when he's just starting to come into his own mate.  Poor lad, I hope he comes through this without any problems.

      Get well soon Marc.

Has been performing leaps and bounds better than I ever thought he would. Hope this doesn't stunt that growth.

Didn't he break his leg last year too?

Speedy recovery for Marc. Going to be a player for the US one day. Not positive he'll be here, though he's shown some great stuff the past few months.

Pelosi was doing very well and progressing nicely. Earned his way into a starting role. Unfortunately, he got his leg broken by a very reckless tackle very late in a match in February.

Marc may, I stress may, get a run out on Friday night with the u21's  ;D

It's great to know he's not far off playing again after such an horrendous injury last February and although it'll take him a while to get back to the level he was, he's at least got the rest of this season and pre season to get himself back in contention for the 1st team.

Positive news. Even if he doesn't get some minutes then at least we know he's not too far off being in contention for a few appearances.

Came on as sub last night, so good to see him back after his injury.

Was a bit rusty but that's to be expected after such a long lay off.  He's got some catching up to do now though as quite a few players younger than him have overtaken him whilst he's been out.  Just needs to keep working hard but not get disheartened if it's not happening for him.

Good luck to the lad.  It was horrible bad luck to have a double leg break so early in his career.  Hopefully now he can focus on his future.

It was shocking mate, more so when they'd already lost the game and that the ref didn't even book him.

Good for Marc. Back in his home state of California. (This should also be moved to the ex player thread)
