Liverpool's Anfield cat is looking for a new home

The Anfield cat, renamed Shankly, is currently with a foster family

The grey and white tabby renamed Shankly, which interrupted a game against Tottenham Hotspur last week, is now under the care of an animal centre.

Spoof Twitter accounts were set up claiming to be "The Anfield Cat" following the match.

Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre in Formby, Merseyside, said the cat was currently with a foster family.

A spokesperson for the centre said: "Shankly will remain in our care for a number of weeks as he recuperates after his life on the streets.

"He will be vaccinated and neutered as this is something any responsible pet owner should do and he will be micro chipped to Freshfields.

"Shankly will be up for rehoming and any potential adoptee will be asked to go through the same adoption process as with any of our other cats."

The cat walked on to the pitch 11 minutes into the game on 6 February before quickly being scooped up by a steward.

Anyone interested in adopting Shankly should call the centre in three weeks.

The spokesperson said the centre is unable to take reservations for Shankly but donations towards his care and those of the other animals at the rescue are welcomed.

It's a spoofed Twitter account and not actually Anfieldcat that I am receiving tweets from? I feel personally let down by Anfieldcat and expect a paw shake in the near future.

Anfield cat who invaded pitch during Liverpool FC game escapes back on to street from Crosby foster home

      Quote
THE crafty cat that made headlines after halting a match at Anfield has escaped from his new foster home.

The feline pitch invader – nicknamed Shankly after the Reds’ legendary former manager – burst through a sealed cat flap at the home in Crosby, where he was being temporarily looked after on behalf of Freshfields animal rescue centre.

Helen Stanbury, the centre manager, said Shankly made a bid for freedom on Saturday night.
She said: “Shanks had clearly had enough of the limelight and was overcome by the need to feel pavement beneath his paws once again.
“We believe it likely that Shanks’ homing instincts will lead him in the direction of Anfield and we would urge residents in the area to keep an eye out for him around his old stomping ground.”

Shankly still needs to be neutered and because of the sores and bites on his neck he hasn’t been microchipped.
The moggy found instant fame after sauntering on to the pitch 11 minutes into Liverpool’s clash with Spurs on February 6.
