      From lfchistory.net -

      The youngsters claim a trophy
1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds.

      Setting records
1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season.

      Al’s farewell
2009 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion to relegate the home side, thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Álvaro Arbeloa played his 98th and final reds game, being involved with an angry exchange with Jamie Carragher towards the end of the match.

      Other games on this day
We have only played three other first-class games on this day over the years.
1985 - We beat Watford 4-3 at Anfield with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to add to a goal from Kenny Dalglish and a John Wark penalty. Jim Beglin scored an own goal in this match, with John Barnes and Colin West also on target for the visitors.

Our other two games ended in 1-1 away draws.
1947 - Winger Bob Priday netted his first reds goal at Brentford as we survived almost the entire second half with ten men after an injury to Bob Paisley.
1969 - Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet at Newcastle United as we ended the season in second place, six points behind champions Leeds United. This game was originally postponed back in December.

      International debutants
1964 - Peter Thompson made his England debut in their 4-3 friendly defeat of Portugal in Lisbon. Clubmate Gordon Milne also played.
1928 - Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop won the first of his 26 England caps as they thumped France 5-1 in a friendly in Paris.
2007 - Stephen Darby won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmates Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield, and against Jordy Brouwer as the Netherlands won this European Championships qualifier 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

      Into the park
2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled.

      Wor Kev’s testimonial
1984 - We took part in a testimonial game for Kevin Keegan as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United. Michael Robinson and Graeme Souness bagged our goals, while Keegan and Terry McDermott were on target for the home side.

      Thommo at the wrong end
1980 - Skipper Phil Thompson scored an own goal for England as they were thumped 4-1 by Wales at the Racecourse Ground in the British International Championships. Ex-red Larry Lloyd won his fourth and final cap, and his only one as a Nottingham Forest player, eight years after his previous cap. Ray Clemence, Ray Kennedy and Phil Neal all also played, as did ex-red Joey Jones for the Welsh.

      A treble for the Saint
1964 - Ian St. John scored a hat-trick as we beat Mexican side Monterrey 3-0 in a friendly in Chicago.

      Heading east
1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium.
1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble.

      Facing the Mancs
1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund.

      Done deal
1935 - Right-back Bob Done was sold to Reading for £150. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926.

      On target for England
1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley grabbed his first full international goal as England beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles. Watford’s John Barnes also played.
1993 - Beardsley, then back with Newcastle United, also scored for England, playing alongside reds full-back Rob Jones, as England thumped Greece 5-0 in a friendly at Wembley.
2002 - Another future reds forward struck for England Under-21’s, as Peter Crouch grabbed his only goal at this level in a 2-1 defeat of host nation Switzerland in the European Championship Finals, with fellow future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also featuring.

      King Kenny for the Scots
Kenny Dalglish twice represented his country against Wales in the British International Championships on this day in the 1970’s.
1975 - He featured in a 2-2 draw alongside John Toshack and ex-red Ted MacDougall. Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan all played the same day in a goalless draw in Northern Ireland.
1978 - Kenny, Graeme Souness and Joey Jones also played in a 1-1 draw.

      A Swedish thumping
1914 - We trounced a Swedish XI 8-0 in a friendly in Stockholm. Billy Lacey bagged a brace, with William Banks, Donald Mackinlay and Tom Miller also amongst the scorers.

      Djibril the champion
1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé played as Auxerre beat Saint-Étienne at the Stade de France in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Coupe Nationale des Juniors, also known as the Challenge Emmanuel Gambardella.
2006 – Future reds centre-half Kolo Touré was on the losing side as Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris.

      Happy birthday cobber
1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012.

      On the move again
2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha.
2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent.

      Signing on

      From lfchistory.net -

      Birthdays galore
1954 - Midfielder Jimmy Case was born in Liverpool. He signed from South Liverpool for a bargain £500 in May 1973 and bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 in August 1981.

1863 - Matt McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in 1899 but later served the reds as a Director, and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923.

1958 - Howard Gayle was born in Toxteth. The first black player to represent Liverpool in modern times, he signed professional terms in November 1977 and notched once in five first-team appearances before moving on to Birmingham City in January 1983 for £75,000.

Two keepers also share a birthday today.
1971 - Brad Friedel was born in Bay Village, Ohio. He made 31 first-team appearances for us after signing from US side Columbus Crew for £1m in December 1997, moving to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in November 2000.
1973 - Pegguy Arphexad was born in Guadeloupe. Our former reserve custodian signed on a free transfer in July 2000 but only played six senior reds games, although he claimed six winners’ medals from the bench in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003 after his contract had expired.

      Euro disappointment
2016 – Daniel Sturridge gave us a half-time lead in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel, but we collapsed after the break to lose 3-1 with Jorge Moreno bagging a brace to add to a Kévin Gameiro strike. Midfielder Joe Allen, centre-forward Christian Benteke and centre-half Kolo Touré all played their last reds games. We had been denied a clear-cut penalty in the first half as the Spanish side went on to claim the trophy for the third consecutive season.

      Off goes Emile
2004 - Emile Heskey was sold to Birmingham City for a fee rising to £6.25m after sixty goals in 223 reds games. He struck sixteen times in 78 games for the Blues before moving to Wigan Athletic for £5.5m in July 2006.

      Other reds signings
1927 - Forward Tom Devlin signed from Preston North End for £250. He was unable to make the first-team, unlike his brother, centre-forward Willie, who was at Anfield at the same time. He moved on to Swindon Town in July 1928.
1985 - Reserves defender Alex Watson signed for the reds as a professional. He only made nine first-team appearances, including our 1988 FA Charity Shield win, before joining Bournemouth in January 1991 for £150,000.

The end of the road for A’Court
1963 - Alan A’Court played his 354th and final League game as we lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a game postponed from Boxing Day to finish the season in eighth place with George Graham netting the first of his four goals past us and Bobby Thomson also on target. He had played 381 games for us in total, scoring 63 goals, helping us to win the Second Division title in 1962.
1982 - Our only other first-class game on this day produced a goalless draw at Middlesbrough, the final game of a season in which we won the League by four points from Ipswich Town. Led by skipper Graeme Souness, the reds had all snuck out of the hotel to go down the pub shortly before the game!

      On target
2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted as England Under-17’s beat Portugal 2-0 in their European Championships Semi-final in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also in action.

      First and last caps
1935 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won his second and final cap as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam.
1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won the first of his six caps for Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Czechoslovakia in Prague.
1939 – O’Mahoney played again as Ireland again drew 2-2 in a friendly, this time with Hungary in Budapest.

1950 - Utility player Bill Jones made his second and final senior appearance for England as they beat Belgium 4-1 in a friendly in Brussels. His grandson Rob went on to win eight full caps for England.
1949 - Bill also played for his country in an unofficial international, when England B beat the Netherlands 4-0 in Amsterdam.

2002 - Future red Djibril Cissé made his senior international debut as a substitute in France’s 2-1 defeat by Belgium at the Stade de France. On the same day, Vladimír Šmicer scored the only goal of the game as the Czech Republic beat World Cup-bound Italy in Prague. Meanwhile, Dietmar Hamann starred in Germany’s 6-2 defeat of Austria, playing alongside ex-red Christian Ziege.
1996 - Reds centre-back Mark Wright won his 45th and final full England cap as they beat Hungary 3-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Future red Paul Ince also played.

      Into the book
2009 – The club launched its own official Facebook page, which now has over 31m followers.

      Ex-reds on the move
1999 - John Barnes was released by Charlton Athletic. He had made just two starts for the Addicks, plus a further ten appearances from the bench. His Charlton debut had been at home to the reds, as they won 1-0 following Jamie Carragher’s dubious dismissal.
2000 - Mike Marsh signed for Southport from Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer. He netted seven times in 37 games as they just missed out on promotion from the Conference.

      Walters starts out
1982 - Mark Walters signed as a professional for Aston Villa. He struck 48 times in 224 games for the Villains before moving to Rangers for £550,000 in December 1987.

      Released
2006 - It was announced that Ramon Calliste, Robbie Foy, Paul Lancaster, Paul Willis and Calum Woods were not being retained for the next season once their contracts expired later in the summer.
2007 - Ex-reds midfielder David Thompson was released by Bolton Wanderers after eight games in five months with the Trotters.
1907 – Forward John Carlin was sold to Preston North End after eight goals in 35 outings since signing from Barnsley in December 1902, helping us to the League title in 1906.

      Young champion
2009 – Christopher Buchtmann helped Germany Under-17’s to claim the European Championship as they beat their Dutch counterparts 2-1 in the Final in Magdeburg after extra time.
2010 – Andre Wisdom featured in the same tournament as England beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in Liechtenstein. On the same day, future red Gini Wijnaldum played as the Dutch Under-21’s lost 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Portugal.

      From lfchistory.net -

      UEFA Cup glory
1976 - We claimed the UEFA Cup for the second time as we drew 1-1 at Club Brugge to triumph 4-3 on aggregate. Kevin Keegan equalised just five minutes after Raoul Lambert’s penalty had put the Belgians ahead, following Tommy Smith’s handball. This result came about despite Bob Paisley being without seven first-team players for ten of the fifteen days between the preceding final League game of the season and this match, due to the British International Championships.

      In comes Sami
1999 - Sami Hyypiä signed from Willem II for £2.6m. He made 464 reds appearances, many as captain, and notched 35 times, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups before joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen in June 2009. That same day we beat Sunderland, the hundredth Football League champions, 3-2 at the Stadium of Light in the Football League 100th Championship Challenge. Robbie Fowler scored from the spot, with Jamie Redknapp and Paul Ince also on target.

      Carra’s farewell
2013 – Jamie Carragher played his 737th and last reds game as Philippe Coutinho struck the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield. Carra nearly rounded his career off with a rare goal as he struck the upright with a long-distance shot. Stewart Downing also played his final game for the club, his 91st, while winger Jordon Ibe made his reds bow.

      Ton-up
1981 - Our only other first-class game on this day saw Ray Kennedy nab the only goal to see off Manchester City at Anfield, as we ended a disappointing League campaign in fifth place. Howard Gayle had earlier headed onto a post from a Jimmy Case corner, while making his fifth and final reds appearance.
2001 - Sami Hyypiä and Sander Westerveld each played their hundredth reds game in our 4-0 win at Charlton Athletic, a result that took us into the new format of the Champions League for the first time as we ended the season third. After surviving a barrage of Addicks attacks in the first half, a brace from Robbie Fowler and goals from Danny Murphy and Michael Owen gave us the win.

      Players of the season
2008 – Fernando Torres was named as the club’s Player of the Season after a vote on the official website. Ryan Babel claimed the Young Player award, with Krisztián Németh named as the Reserves Player of the Season.

      Jocky meets Tosh in Cardiff
1979 - Alan Hansen and future red John Wark both made their Scotland debuts in a 3-0 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships. All the goals were scored by ex-red John Toshack, while Graeme Souness and ex-red Joey Jones also played, with Kenny Dalglish skippering the Scots. On the same day, Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all played in European Championships qualifiers.

      Double England debutants
1971 - Reds defensive pairing Larry Lloyd and Tommy Smith both made their England bows in a goalless draw with Wales at Wembley in the British International Championships. This was Tommy’s only full cap, while Emlyn Hughes, Chris Lawler and John Toshack all also played.

      Final caps
1978 - Joey Jones won his final cap as a reds player when Wales beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham.
1986 - He won his 72nd and final cap as they beat Canada 3-0 in a friendly in Vancouver. Future red Dean Saunders netted a brace, his first goals for his country.
1987 - John Barnes won his 31st cap for England, and his final one as a Watford player, as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in the Rous Cup at Wembley. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. On the same day, Ronnie Rosenthal won his first cap as a Club Brugge player as Israel lost 1-0 to Switzerland in a friendly in Aarhau.
2014 – Tom Ince won his last Under-21’s cap while on loan at Crystal Palace, and his final one as a Blackpool player, as England beat Wales 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea, with future red Danny Ings also in action.

      Nice one Cyril
1946 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we beat an American League Select side 5-0 in New York. Jack Balmer and Bob Priday also netted.

      Euro champions
2012 - Fernando Torres was booked after coming off the bench as Chelsea saw off Bayern München in a penalty shoot-out in their UEFA Champions League Final in Munich.
2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever became a European champion as the Dutch Under-17’s beat Italy 4-2 in the Final in Dublin.

      A right Charlie
2006 – Future red Charlie Adam was sent off while making his debut for Scotland Under-21’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Turkey in Kilmarnock.
2010 – Future red Christian Benteke made his senior international bow in Belgium’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Bulgaria in Brussels.

      King Billy on target
1945 - Billy Liddell scored as Scotland lost 4-1 to Austria in a friendly in Vienna. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger also played.

      For Keith
1982 - We took part in a testimonial match for Alan Kennedy’s brother Keith, beating a Bury Select XI 8-7 at Gigg Lane. Keith Kennedy came on as a substitute for the reds and scored two goals. David Johnson also struck twice, with Craig Johnston, Steve Ogrizovic and Bury’s Paul Hilton and Craig Madden all also netting for the reds.

      Pepe wed
2006 - Pepe Reina married Yolanda in Córdoba, just six days after helping us to claim the FA Cup against West Ham United in Cardiff.

      Murphy’s birthday
1980 - Ex-reserves defender Neil Murphy was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, and was last seen playing for West Cheshire League side Maghull as well as working as a fireman.

      Winning at sea
1935 – We beat Marino 5-3 in Gran Canaria, with Dave Wright and Tosh Johnson each netting twice and Fred Howe also on target.

      On the move again
2004 - Ex-reserves midfielder Danny Williams re-joined Wrexham from Bristol Rovers on a free transfer. He helped them avoid relegation from League Two in his first season, but they succumbed the second time around.
2007 - Former reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Perth Glory. He retired from playing in 2013, setting up his own soccer school.
2010 – Reserves centre-half Mikel San José was sold to Athletic de Bilbao, where he remains a regular for the La Liga side.
2015 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco from Rio Ave, having already spent two seasons on loan with the French side.

      Three Hungarians
2003 – Future reds winger Stewart Downing won his first cap for England Under-19’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Dublin in a European Championships qualifier. John Welsh also featured.
2008 - Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and András Simon all played for Hungary Under-19’s in their 2-2 draw with Lithuania in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár.

It was our last game without the aid of goal line technology, and sure enough within 4 minutes, the ball was in their net, well over the goalline at least. I had a clear view of it crossing the line, unfortunately the officials didn't, and let them away with it. I said "thank christ, it will be the last time it happens" . Which it was.

It may have been a routine end of season fixture, but it was my first home game in attendance since 2006. After going through the full Craigslist "ticket" experience, I finally got a real ticket at the ticket office with just minutes to spare, so I missed all the pre game entertainment. We knew it wasn't only the last game for Carra, but several others would be quietly heading off with him. Reina left as well, and Suarez looked like he was off too. The following season looked more like a transition job than a title challenge, but that's another story.

      From lfchistory.net -

      Walsh walks in
1984 - Paul Walsh signed from Luton Town for £700,000. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988.

1914 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam joined from Blackpool. He struck an astonishing thirty times in just 39 reds games, moving to Arsenal in October 1919. He later had a successful managerial career with Watford and the Turkish national side, amongst others.

1925 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson signed from Aberdeen for £1,750. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister.

      Ephraim the first
1921 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth became the first red to captain England, as he won his second cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Belgium in Brussels. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted his first England goal in the same game.

      Wembley disappointment
1977 - Our first treble dream died as we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. Jimmy Case equalised just two minutes after Stuart Pearson had given United the lead. However, only three minutes later Jimmy Greenhoff scored the winning goal, one of his five past us, to take the cup to Old Trafford for the first time in fourteen years. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history.

      Farewell Lucas
2017 – Lucas Leiva played his 346th and last reds game as we beat Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to secure UEFA Champions League football for the next season and relegate the visitors. Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana on target after the break.

      Striking first caps
1975 – Ipswich Town’s David Johnson netted a brace on his England debut as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the same competition. John Toshack bagged his final goal as a reds player in this game, while Ray Clemence also played.
1980 - Ian Rush won his first full cap for Wales, as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Joey Jones both also featured.

      Bobby the boss
1982 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Portsmouth. He stayed in charge for two years, with his signings including Neil Webb and Mark Hateley. He led them to the old Third Division title in his first season in charge, and kept them up the following season, but was then sacked and replaced by Alan Ball.

      Torben’s birthday
1963 - Danish defender Torben Piechnik was born in Copenhagen. He only played 24 times after Graeme Souness signed him from F.C. København for £500,000 in September 1992, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield.

      Another honour for Ged
2001 - Gérard Houllier was given a special Nationwide award, having bizarrely been pipped to the Manager Of The Year trophy by Ipswich Town boss George Burley despite leading the reds to a cup treble and third place in the League.

      More reds on target
1998 - Vladimír Šmicer scored in his third consecutive Czech Republic game as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in a Kirin Cup game in Kobe, Japan.
2002 - Michael Owen netted as skipper in England’s 1-1 draw with South Korea in a pre-World Cup friendly. Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy and future red Joe Cole all also played. Milan Baroš was booked as the Czech Republic Under-21’s drew 1-1 with Greece in the European Championships in Switzerland on the same day
2008 – Reserves forward Krisztián Németh grabbed a brace, including a penalty, as Hungary Under-19’s beat Cyprus 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with clubmate András Simon making an appearance from off the bench.

      European champions
2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke netted his last goal at this level as England Under-17’s beat the Netherlands on penalties after their European Championships Final finished 1-1 in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also featuring.

      Wrong and right for Wright
1991 - Future red Mark Wright skippered England for the only time, scoring an own goal as they beat the USSR 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley. John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both also played.
1988 - Barnes and Beardsley both also represented their country when England beat a Scotland side that included Steve Nicol 1-0 in the Rous Cup at Wembley.

      Poland for Wales
1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland won his second and final official cap for Wales as they lost 2-1 to France in a friendly in Paris. He played a further four times in Wartime games while on our books.

      Saint turned sinner
1961 – Ian St. John scored and was then sent off for kicking out as we drew a friendly 1-1 at Slovakian side Tatran Prešov.

      For Stan and Tony
2000 - We took part in a testimonial match for Steve Staunton and Tony Cascarino, losing 4-2 to an Irish XI at Lansdowne Road. Our goals came from Emile Heskey and Michael Owen.

      Derby joy
1944 - We beat Everton 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of the Lord Mayor’s War Fund. Don Welsh bagged a treble, with Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer also on target as all five goals came within an eight-minute spell.

      Taylor for England
Phil Taylor twice represented his country on this day in history.
1947 - He featured in a goalless B international in Switzerland.
1950 - He played alongside clubmate Jimmy Payne as England B won an unofficial international 2-1 in Luxembourg.

      On the move
1999 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish, King Kenny’s son, was sold to Norwich City from Newcastle United for £300,000, after a successful loan spell. However, he only bagged two goals in a total of 48 games for the Canaries.
2001 - Robbie Keane was sold to Leeds United from Internazionale for £12m, after nine goals in twenty outings during a loan spell at Elland Road the previous season.

2007 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Miles signed for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Macclesfield Town. He netted just seven times in 111 games for them before joining Conference National side Fleetwood Town in June 2010.
2015 - Ex-reds midfielder Danny Guthrie was released by Reading after five goals in 69 games. On the same day, Jordon Ibe signed a new contract with the reds.
2016 – Reserves forward Jerome Sinclair agreed to sign for Watford on 1st July, having become our youngest ever player in September 2012 aged sixteen years and six days. He struck once in five senior reds games in total and has so far netted once in twelve outings for the Hornets, spending much of his time out on loan.

      Robbo for the Irish
Future red Michael Robinson played for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies on this day in consecutive years.
1981 - They lost 3-0 to West Germany B in Bremen
1982 – He played in a 1-0 defeat in Chile, with future reds Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll making his debut.

      Tony starts a run
1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the first of all seven games on an FA Tour, grabbing a treble as an England side beat Tahiti 4-1 in Papeete. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the trip.

      European disappointment
2008 – Ex-red Nicolas Anelka had a penalty saved in the UEFA Champions League Final for Chelsea as they lost 6-5 in the shoot-out to Manchester United in Moscow, after the game had ended 1-1 at both full time and after extra time. Future red Joe Cole also featured for the losing side.

      Youngsters in action
2010 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. Meanwhile, ex-red Jari Litmanen won his 132nd cap for Finland as they lost 2-0 in Estonia.

He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although barely featured for their first team.
1925 - Northern Irish inside-forward Billy McDevitt was sold to Exeter City for a club record fee, having been converted to a centre-half since arriving at Anfield from Swansea Town in 1923. He has played just four reds games.

      From lfchistory.net -

      Happy birthday Vlad
1973 - Vladimír Šmicer was born in Děčín in Czechoslovakia. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.

1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991.

      Sami’s farewell
2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. Fernando Torres headed in the opener with his fiftieth reds goal, in just his 84th game. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. Yossi Benayoun rounded off the scoring before Sami made his entrance.

      Ged steps down
2004 - Gérard Houllier stepped down as reds boss. He had been in sole charge since November 1998, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. He said, “I'd rather have stayed as manager but I leave on good terms with everybody. I may have left Liverpool, but Liverpool will not leave me.”

      Appointments galore
2011 – A raft of appointments at the club were announced, including Frank McParland as Director of Academy and Player Development, Pep Segura as Technical Director, Stuart Webber as Director of Recruitment, and Steve Cooper as Under-16’s Coach and Academy Manager. Rodolfo Borrell stepped up from Under-18’s Coach to Reserve Team Head Coach, with Mike Marsh taking over the Under-18’s.

On the same day, Lucas Leiva was presented with the Standard Chartered Liverpool FC Player of the Season for 2010-11 award.

En route to title number five
1947 - Our only other first-class game on this day to date brought a 2-1 victory at Arsenal in our penultimate game of the season, taking us back to the top of the table, despite being behind with only a quarter of an hour to go. Jack Balmer headed us level before a Bob Priday cross was turned into his own net by full-back Wally Barnes. We pipped Manchester United for the title that season by one point, to claim it for the fifth time. Boss George Kay was not present at the match as he was away watching transfer targets, so captain Balmer gave the team talk and the board of directors voted on tactical changes during the match!

      Emlyn for the last time
1980 - Ex-red Emlyn Hughes won his 62nd and final cap for England, coming off the bench as they beat Scotland 2-0 in a British International Championships match at Hampden Park. Nice one Cyril

      Friendlies in Scandinavia
We have played three matches in Scandinavia on this day in history, scoring a total of twelve goals, but conceding eleven.

Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red James Milner all also featured. On the same day, Maxi Rodríguez won his first cap as a reds player, netting twice as Argentina thumped Canada 5-0 in a friendly in Buenos Aires, with Javier Mascherano skippering the side. Meanwhile Brad Jones won his last cap while with Middlesbrough as Australia beat New Zealand 2-1 in a friendly in Melbourne.

1975 - Future red David Johnson scored as England trounced Scotland 5-1 in the British International Championships. Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, future red Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall all also played.

      Double Dutch
2008 – Ryan Babel bagged his final international goal as a reds player with Dirk Kuyt also on target as the Netherlands beat Andriy Voronin’s Ukraine 3-0 in a friendly in Feyenoord. 1948 – Right-half Roy Saunders signed on a free transfer from Hull City. He netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959, as well as fathering future reds striker Dean. He died in January 2009.

The same reason why Klopp survived the scoreline of the same margin when we had to face City, and the same reason why Critchley survived the similiar scoreline in the League Cup game. Mitigating circumstances.

If every coach was fired because they lost the odd game by a freak scoreline, there would be a lot more out of work. If Klopp was sacked after the City result, who knows where we would be now. Not World Champions and 25 points clear anyway.

      There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
      Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead, and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all
