2016:
Liverpool v Sunderland
In 2016, we had 4 home games at 3pm on a Saturday. I was at 2 of them, and this one against bottom of the table Sunderland was a home banker to go top with a win.
With a ticket for U5 in the new Main Stand, I got the opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. There was a fair bit of climbing to do, but gone were the days of climbing steps, and escalators between tiers was definitely a wow factor. The view of the game itself was similiar to the tv angle at the time.
As for the game itself, it was the usual attack v defence fare against Moyes. Coutinho went off injured after half an hour, Hendo had his usual game when playing against his former club, and Karius showed us how to turn a goal kick into a corner to defend. As the frustration grew after the break, as chance after chance peppered the visitors goal, Jürgen let everyone know that he wanted us to turn the volume up. Eventually, Divock broke the deadlock with 15 minutes to go, Milner wrapped it up with a penalty in injury time, we won 2-0 and we went top of the league. However, it didn't even last 3 hours as Chelsea beat Spurs in the late game to go back on top.
Never mind, Bournemouth and West Ham were the next 2 opponents for us to go back top. With just 1 point taken from the two games, our title challenge soon faded and we were 10 points behind within a few weeks. It would be August 2018 before we saw Position 1 by our name in the table again.
