talkSPORT Transfer Spotlight: Liverpool and Arsenal target Welliton - facts, stats and video of the Spartak striker

Liverpool and Arsenal will reportedly battle Fiorentina and Borussia Dortmund for Welliton's signature

Luis Suarez will be missing for  games and Andy Carroll can't buy a goal, while Arsenal seem to have just Robin Van Persie scoring at the  moment, so it's no surprise reports are linking the two with a transfer for Spartak Moscow hotshot Welliton.

      Name: Welliton
      Date of Birth: 22/10/86
      Born: Para, Brazil
      Position: Striker
      Club: Spartak Moscow
      International: No caps

      WHAT'S THE LATEST NEWS?
Liverpool and Arsenal are set to fight Serie A and Bundesliga clubs Fiorentina and Borussia Dortmund to sign Spartak Moscow ace Welliton, the striker that has been booting the ball into the back of the net for fun.

      DID YOU KNOW?
      1) Born in the northern state of Para in the town of Conceição do Araguaia, Morais Soares Welliton moved to Russia in 2007 to join Spartak Moscow after a spell at Brazilian club Goiás.

      2) Upon his arrival in Russia, fans of his new club subjected him to racist taunts when they displayed a banner reading: “The number 11 belongs to Tikhonov. Monkey go home,” referring to former player Andrei Tikhonov.

      3) In 2010, Welliton bagged consecutive hat-tricks in the Russian Premier League. Against Lokomotiv Moscow he walked home with the match ball, then repeated the feat the following week against FC Tom Tomsk, which he scored in just six minutes.

      4) He topped the Russian Premier League's scoring charts in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons and currently has seven in 15 starts in the 2011/12 campaign.

      5) In August's Moscow derby between Spartak and rivals CSKA, opposition goalkeeper and Russia no.1 Igor Akinfeyev was stretchered off after an aerial collision with Welliton. Authorities then banned the striker for six games in September.

      THEY SAY
“He has overcome all problems with passage into a new country. He is young, fast, technical, an ideal artist who acts along the entire front line of attack, not just along the flanks as this past season.” Former Russia and Spartak Moscow ace Aleksandr Mostovoi

      HE SAYS
“I won’t wait for a long time for an invitation to Brazil's national team in case I have an opportunity to play for the Russian side. If all necessary documents are ready and I get a concrete invitation, I would say 'yes' immediately and start playing for Russia.”

Nothing amazing in that video but I noticed 30 seconds in he drags the ball from behind him and absolutely tw*ts it with almost no backlift. Always impressed me that does, Anelka had always done it.
Know nothing about the player though.

It keeps happening to every Brazilian (or any Black foreigner) that plays in Russia... and nothing is done to stop that. Instead, FIFA gives them a World Cup...

As for the player, he's one of those guys who left the country too early, before making a name for himself here. I've seen him play very few times, but always heard great things about him in Russia. Too bad for him that this kind of player rarely get a chance in the national team - and when they do, the press usually go berserk asking "who's that guy?", or saying how poor we must be for having "an unknown" playing for Brazil, etc.

What do you mean by 'this kind of player', mate. Do you mean those that go abroad at an early age?

Yep... lots of good Brazilian players leave the country before making a name for themselves here and really suffer to get into the national team because of that.

Deco, for example, was barely an unknown for the Brazilian press. He had the quality to play for us but had to play for Portugal instead, as he wasn't given any chances for Brazil. Hulk could've gone the same route, but fortunately for him the Brazilian press and football people in general are a lot more aware of what's going on in Europe than before... it's still harder for him though - a bad performance and lots of questions will be asked (much more than if it's a "big name", for sure). It's even worse for Welliton as very few people bother to watch the Russian league here. The likes of Afonso Alves (also an unknown then) being given a chance didn't help these players cause either, cause as we now know, he's pure rubbish.

Fred was called to the national team last year when he was having a sh*t season (eventually he picked up his form and ended the year brilliantly, but he was far from it during the Copa America), but his place in the team was hardly questioned because he plays in Brazil, for Fluminense. Hulk was being immense for Porto but wasn't even considered then...

There's also Eduardo (before the injury, he was a top class finisher) playing for Croatia, and a few other examples.
