AC Milan/Real Madrid Tribute to Hillsborough Disaster
      Jan 23, 2012 07:47:35 pm
I don't know whether this has been posted before or even if I have posted it in the right place but I saw this today and had to share it.

On 19 April 1989, the Wednesday after the disaster, a European Cup semi final between AC Milan and Real Madrid was played. The referee blew his whistle 3:06 minutes into the game to stop play and hold a minute's silence for those who lost their lives at Hillsborough. Half way through the minute's silence, the A.C. Milan fans sang Liverpool's "You'll Never Walk Alone" as a sign of respect.

Seen it before but it sends a shiver down my spine whenever I watch it (in a good way, sort of). Both sad and heartwarming at the same time.

I didn't know of this before this evening either. I just randomly found it on YouTube.

Apparently a number of AC Milan fans, in the days following the disaster, printed off song sheets with the words to You'll Never Walk Alone and handed them out amongst their support with a plea to learn them for the next home game, only 4 days after the disaster. A gesture was planned to stop the game at 3.06pm (the time of the game being stopped at Hillsborough) and hold a minutes silence.

It goes to show that despite our differences on the pitch we all share a common human bond.

Great gesture from both of the clubs. Totally got my respect and admiration especially the Milan fans who made the effort to print and distribute the anthem.

Have seen this before and it's definitely one of the most moving tributes. Two great clubs who for me command respect and give it out in equal fashion.

I've posted my respect and gratitude earlier to the respective teams for their totally amazing gesture and I am left to consider how a tragedy in 1989 can still evoke such depths of loss and grief, feelings I experience everytime I see a tribute with such sincerity as that.

Remember watching it the night it happened, pure lump in the throat emotion, also pleased that some Reds managed to pass on a Grazie Milan banner to their fans in Istanbul.

Weren't a bad team either that Milan side and won the game 5-1 if I remember rightly.

      Never knew this either.
      Funny.
Other than the Reds as a kid I always looked out for AC and Madrid.

The Masters at Prescot Grammar all sat us in the assembly hall one afternoon in 1968 as if to teach us how to play footy properly.
It was to watch the Real - Eintracht final of 1960 which Real won 7 - 3 at Hampden.

Great football clubs and respect at the top of the game.
