Did Bellers care more about Cardiff than Liverpool
      Feb 27, 2012 01:01:52 pm
Fantastic time yesterday winning Carling cup, one thing that started to really irk me a few days ago is how Craig Bellemy seemed more concerned about not beating Cardiff than Winning The Cup for Liverpool.

Ever single time he said he wont celebrate if he scores or wins out of respect, fair enough but what about respecting those fans who are cheering your name week in week out, just seemed to me he was more concerned about Cardiff yesterday than Liverpool and I think Kenny was spot on leaving him on the bench.

I don't think he would have tried any less than normal just that his heart wasn't in it to win it for Liverpool and even now after winning the cup he still is going on about how he didn't care if we won or not, well we as the fans did care!!

Seriously Craig show some consideration to the fans who are supporting you now.

Ashley Williams admits Wales stars are set for difficult week as they aim to honour Gary Speed
      By Chris WathanFeb 26 2012

SHOCK. Sadness. A sense of the surreal.

Ashley Williams knows all the emotions that took such a terrible grip on Sunday, November 27 are about to come flooding back.

Because, four months on from the devastating loss of Gary Speed, the awful reality will really hammer home for Williams and the rest of the Wales camp when they meet for the game set to honour him.

“We knew it was coming, that it would all be fresh in our minds again,” says the Swansea City centre-back ahead of Wednesday’s friendly match with Costa Rica, a game dedicated as a tribute to the late national boss.

“We’re a close group as a squad. A lot of us have come across each other once or twice and I’ve spoken to a few of the lads like Craig (Bellamy) on the phone since.

“But to be all there together and not with Gary will bring it all back. It will make things very real.”

The last time Williams, Bellamy, Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale and the rest of Speed’s squad shared a dressing room as a team all was right with the world.

Norway had been comprehensively beaten. Rows over Team GB had subsided simply because of an excitement about the future of Team Wales. And Speed was very much part of it.

At the same venue Wales must keep looking forward in one of their final three fixtures before the qualifying road to Brazil begins, but not without minds turning back.

“We know we’ve got a game to play but it’s going to be strange,” says Williams, a contender to lead out the side given doubts over Ramsey’s fitness.

“It’s an important game because we’re still working towards the campaign and keeping this progress going.

“But it’s impossible to ignore the circumstances. It’s going to be a bit like when we played Villa. We’ll want to win it for Gary but it is going to be a strange experience.”

Just one hour after Speed’s death was confirmed by the Football Association of Wales, Swansea kicked off their Premier League fixture with Aston Villa.

The tears shed by Villa goalkeeper Shay Given in the pre-match tribute suggested the game should never have gone ahead.

“Looking back we shouldn’t have,” says the 27-year-old, who played seven times under Speed having established himself as Wales’ No.1 defender.

“I remember being in the dressing room getting ready as normal when I had a message that James Collins wanted to speak to me.

“When I got outside the door he told me about Alan Shearer having phoned Shay Given earlier. I knew from his face it was real and the shock just hit me.

“I went back into the dressing room ready to tell the rest of the lads but by the time I’d been outside the news had already started filtering through on texts and Twitter.

“As soon as we were told the game was going ahead we got ourselves ready, focused and I had it in my mind to try and look after Joe (Allen) and Tayls (Neil Taylor).

“But it affected all the side, everyone in the stadium. The atmosphere was so weird. It felt as thought people just wanted to get it over with.

“We’d wanted to play it to dedicate it to Gary. He was a football man and the feeling, certainly from our camp, was that what better way to celebrate his life than by playing the game he loved.

“But having gone through it, it felt like a wasted exercise. I’ve never played in a match like that before where you almost don’t care about the result.

“I tried my best to get going but it didn’t happen. It was always going to finish 0-0.”

Williams, no doubt like many in that Wales side, like many across the nation and across the game, says the next few days were a haze of not being able to fully take in what had happened. Why it had happened.

“How could anyone have seen it coming?” he asks. “Perhaps with someone else, but not him. I guess it shows no-one knows someone like the person themselves.”

The Speed Welsh football knew will be celebrated in Cardiff in three days, more than 50 former international colleagues attending while the likes of Super Furry Animals will play for the man who captained Wales more than any other.

The squad, though, come together tonight with a new manager to welcome them. But the will-he’s and won’t-he’s about who is coming and going along with Chris Coleman has led to plenty of uncertainty about the immediate future.

“I don’t know what’s planned or what will happen to be honest,” Williams says.

“We know Chris is the manager but we won’t know how things will move on until those first meetings.

“You almost want to get this game out of the way and the Mexico game in New York will be a good chance for us all to come together fresh and bond again.

“But I don’t think it’s about putting a full-stop on things. No-one wants that. We want to move forward and this game will do that, but we don’t want to forget Gary – we want to qualify for him. As long as we stay focused and together we can do that.”

It will take the likes of Williams to stay in the form he showed under Speed for that to happen, for country and club with the three Swans in the Welsh set-up blossoming in the top flight.

“I think we’ve more than dealt with the step-up so far,” says Williams of his first taste of top-level football.

“But no-one wants to stand still, we want to keep pushing and progressing and developing as players and as a team.”

The next challenge for the trio and the rest of Brendan Rodgers’ side is today’s trip to Stoke, a real return of intent after a 15-day break between fixtures allowed the Swansea squad to getaway to warmer climes for a training camp.

“I think my body needed the break and it was good to get out in the sun,” Williams says having played in every Premier League minute this season.

“We were able to recharge with a change of scenery and refocus but we have a real test straight away.

“But the difference between us as a side this season to last is that I think we’ve shown we can stand up physically.

“We might lose but we won’t get rolled over in that sense.

“ We’ve got to show that again today but also impose our game on the ball.”

But if the physical challenge is overcome today, the emotional one awaits for Williams and Wales on Wednesday.

Come on... Bellers never gives any less than 100%.. He would have wanted to win that as much as anyone.

He was a Red growing up in Cardiff.. Cardiff are his Dads team, he respects them and is a proud Welsh man, Cardiff are his home town club but is a Red.

He has a game for Wales coming up in the week for his friends memory and I'm sure that came to him yesterday as well.

Craig Bellamy admitted he had sympathy for his former club Cardiff City after Liverpool's dramatic Carling Cup final victory.

Liverpool prevailed 3-2 on penalties against the Championship side after the game finished 2-2 at the end of extra-time at Wembley.

Reds forward Bellamy, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff, admitted the Bluebirds pushed Liverpool all the way and he was just happy to bring the trophy back to Anfield.

"We knew it was going to be a difficult game, which obviously it proved and it sort of reminded me of the Birmingham game [last season's final win over Arsenal] last year," Bellamy told Sky Sports News.

"Finals are very, very difficult and that just proved it.

"We thought we were going to win towards the end and they fought back and credit to them, they were outstanding.

"We have won a trophy, but the simple fact is there is pressure on this club and pressure on the players day in and day out to perform at the highest level and that's really what we have to continue and try and do."

"But unfortunately for them, and fortunately for us, no one is going to remember what happened really, it is just basically going to be another trophy to Liverpool's great history.

"I do feel a little bit sorry for them, but it is a trophy for us."

      New dawn

Bellamy is refusing to speculate whether the success could herald the dawning of a new era at Anfield and insists there is still a lot to play for this season.

Asked if the cup victory could be the platform for more success, Bellamy said: "We will have to wait and see.

"Birmingham last year was it a platform for them? It certainly wasn't, so it's not the end of the season for us now.

"We have won a trophy, but the simple fact is there is pressure on this club and pressure on the players day in and day out to perform at the highest level and that's really what we have to continue and try and do."

I can hear what your sayin woodsie but I suppose you have to try and understand the man himself and how he conducts himself both on and off the pitch..
To me he comes across as a really nice guy both in interviews(watch 60 mins with CB on LFCtv) and on the pitch with his passion..He's obviously a big softy at heart and you have to wonder what went through his head after scoring the winning goal against Man City in the semi final that he'd be involved against his beloved boyhood team Cardiff City...That coupled with Gary Speeds death must've been a real head f**k..
I agree with you in that Kenny did the right thing leaving him on the bench and when he did come on he had to slot into that deeper role which  Henderson covered so we never saw him as we have done so much in recent games..
When Enrique put him clear in the box I honestly thought he'd produce the winning cross and there was a few other moments when he did go close..His corners were good but their 2 big centre halves outshone our attackers..
When you think of how the likes of Tevez celebrated for City against Man Utd and how Adabyour ran the whole length of the pitch when he scored against Arsenal to goad their fans I don't think Craig is wrong in saying what he said..
He's a real character to have in your squad and i'm so glad he's in ours, he wears his heart on his sleeve and there are few individuals like that left in football these days...Its not his fault he was wearing a red shirt when he scored against Norwich , Newcastle and Man City this season , he could've put the ball in row Z like Charlie did. ;D
We are gonna need his attacking flare and passion as we enter the final run in this season..

Not the best of threads. Bellers gives 100% everytime he puts a Liverpool shirt on. You can't stop the lad for having feelings. He's the best player you have brought into the club for a while. Having a thread like this doesn't do the lad justice.

      Thread should be locked.

      I can't believe this thread.

I knowBellers plays for Liverpool and is a Liverpool fan ... but I don't think you can blame him because he was born in Cardiff and he loves the club and city as well.

Don't think it's fair to say he doesn't give 100% for or respect Liverpool fans.

      Yeah, what a F***ing bellend.

Showing no emotion after dumping his former and boyhood/local club out of the only major competition they have stood a chance of winning in the past few years and probably for a few years to come. Give over.

What did you want him to do? Run over to the Cardiff end laughing his bollocks off at them?

Horrible situation for him and I didn't expect anything less. Showed his class once again.

To that end did you see him arguing on the pitch with the wembley fella in the suit just before kick off?
