Your top 10 goalkeepers of all time
      Mar 10, 2012 09:35:59 am
The most specialised position on the field but perhaps the least recognised when it comes to selecting the "best ever" so lets give them there own thread, the good oul goalkeeper.

Some are great shot stoppers, but poo on crosses. Some are great on crosses but poo on oneone ones etc so who are the 10 best you ever seen?

      Mine in no particular order

      1) Pat Jennings.

As a 7 year old sat watching the 86 world cup this fella caught my imagination. He just seemed to save everything. The north lost 3 nil to Brazil but for Jennings it could have been 10. Agile and brave. Just a brilliant keeper

      2) Ray Clemence

Liverpool or not he would have to be in the top 10. Great in the air, strong on penos, quick off the line to close down attackers in a 1 on 1 brilliant shot stopper. The complete deal. Better then Shilton he should have had another 140 caps

      3) Neville Southall

Dont care what anyone else thinks, big Nev was a boss keeper. Scruffy get but a supreme shot stopper

      4) Peter Scmichael

Like Southall played for a bitter rival but no denying his brilliance as a goal keeper. Used his size brilliantly to shut people out. Probably as much to do with utd success then anyone else without a smuch praise for it

      5) Buffon

Theres a reason Juve paid over 30 million for him. Outstanding shot stopper

      6) Iker Casillas

Around for ever this lad. Simplest thing that can be said about him is that anyone who kept Reina out of the team over the last 5 years is special. A supreme shot stopper

      7) Rinat Dasaev

The Russian was as a commanding goalkeeper in the box as Ive ever seen. Brilliant in the air caught everything none of this falpping and punching crap we see today. In the same class as Pepe at starting attacks with his throws or kick outs. Btrilliant keeper probabaly the best of the 80s

      ( 8 ) Oliver Kahn

The German had some prescence. Used his frame superbly. Dominant in the air like every good kkeeper should be

      9) Dino Zoff

To be playing at 40 is one thing, to captain your country to world cup glory is off the chart.

      10) At number 10 is a monatge of keepers I never seen but have heard so much about

Sepp Maier, Gordon Banks, Lev Yashin, Jean Marie Pfaff, Elisha Scott

Won't be a popular choice but I would have Andy Goram (Scotland & Rangers) in there. Think I saw him make 3 mistakes in 8 or 9 seasons. Earned Rangers 20 points a season and the biggest single reason they equalled Celtics 9in a row.

Known in England for his brief flirtation with the scum at end of his career but at peak was outstanding. There was a triumvirate in the mid 90's of Seamen, Schmichael and Goram and most in Scotland would have chosen Goram every time - especially Celtic fans who missed out on at least 2 titles because of him.

Horrible man playing for a horrible team - helluva goalie

I never saw him play but my old Dad reckoned Elisha Scott was one of the best and the fact that he played for L.F.C from 1912 to 1934 gives an indication of how good he was. Also Lev Yashin the Russian goalkeeper was regarded as the best in the world when he was playing.

Don't want to put them in any order, but my favourites probably are

      Iker Casillas
      Marcos
      Gianluigi Buffon
      Andoni Zubizarreta
      Taffarel
      Gianluca Pagliuca
      Bodo Illgner
Thomas Ravelli (admittedly only because of the WC 94)
      Michel Preud'homme (similar to Ravelli)
      Julio Cesar

Zubizarreta is probably the one that left the biggest impression on me as far as keepers I've seen in my lifetime.

Someone who also should be in the top 10 is Sepp Maier, legendary keeper. Managed to win German footballer of the year 3 times in the era of players like Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Rummenigge etc. Won the Europan Cup 3 years in a row with Bayern, aswell as the World Cup and European Championship with the German national team.

It's pointless me trying to make a top 10 list because I would be doing it mainly off other people's reports and/or odd matches I've seen here and there, which in the case of keepers based abroad would mean major competitions only.

All I can really tell you is the best, most consistent keeper I've seen in my life time and as much as it pains me to say it, that would be Peter Schmeichel. He didn't really have a week point, he was brilliant at shot stopping, hugely intimidating when one-on-one, good in the air and his distribution was as good as Reina's when launching a counter attack.
I hated him at the time but I haven't personally seen anyone better and ManUre have never managed to replace him.

I was also a big fan of Zubizarreta, I was heartbroken with the way his international career ended in the WC 98, but overall he was a fantastic keeper and had a brilliant career.

Does anyone remember Bodo Illgner, one of the keepers I mentioned? He won the World Cup with Germany and finished his career at Real Madrid, after the emergency of Iker Casillas. Always been a fan.

Big Rab Douglas at Dens the last few seasons is up there though he was a bit dodgy for Celtic ;)

      Its very hard to put these great goalkeepers in order;

      Here is my list.

Gordon Banks Considered by many to be the greatest English goalkeeper

      Peter Shilton

Bert Trautmann, some say he was the best ever.

Ray Clemence, the best Liverpool goalkeeper.

Pat Jennings, saw him play lots of time, he has to be in the top ten.

Peter Schmeichel, one of the best to play for Man U.

      Peter Bonetti.

Harald Schumacher, another German, but still one of the best.

Jean-Marie Pfaff, this man was a nutter, but great.

Lev Yashin, Famed for always wearing a distinctive all-black strip when playing.

Thats my top ten, but you could add Neville Southall, to that list some where.

For those who put Reina in the list, sorry he is a very good goalkeeper, but not one of the great.

      Pat Jennings ,hands like shovels
      Southhall another quality keeper
Andy Goram great shot stopper if he had been taller would have skooshed it as the best keeper  ,head full of mince  of the pitch tho, liked the gargle to much him an Gazza , how much dough have they spent on the sauce
Harald Schumacher should have been banned from football for life after his assault on Patrick Battiston 1982 World Cup ,arrogant  :jackoff:
      Oliver Khan ,another arrogant  :jackoff:
Shilton well up there ,save from Kenny  for England most keepers couldnae have got that with a ladder
Ray Clemence  was magical in goals for The Reds
Brucie Brucie Grobellar gets my vote as our best , for one reason when it really  counted crazy legs in the final Ray wouldnt have thought of that , mind games just to get an edge
Peter Schmeichel didnt have much competition in my book as the best keeper ever but
Joe Hart  I think could well  be the best on this thread and by a long distance ,guys got it  ,great hands , good kicker  , brave  ,concentration , athleticism ,organises a defence , calls the shots , great shot stopper , world class save every other week, quick of his line , gets the angles right ,moves with the ball ,very rarely see him flat footed , comes for crosses commands his area ,averages on on to ones very good, tried the mind games with Stevie G with pens and lost , yup the boys class ,wonder how long he will be at City worth his weight in gold having said that City's minted so it could be a career their

Another odd ball keeper John "Budgie" Burridge great character and a hell of a goalie ,maybe not as well known  as the guys above,
but a  dependable  hard working honest pro .

In no particular order, only those who I'm young enough to have remembered

David Seaman - great goalkeeper. Pulled out some outstanding saves. People remember him for getting lobbed by Ronaldinho but that was wicked in every sense. His quality made a mockery of every England goalkeeper after that and it seemed England had finally ended a run of having truly great goalkeepers...until Joe Hart came along?

Gianluigi Buffon - Outstanding rock. Ever present force with Juventus and Italy. Never let's anyone down as does...

Iker Casillas - what's been said about him has been said. Europe is blessed to see two truly great goalkeepers playing in our time with this man and Buffon.

Petr Cech - This man in his first couple of seasons at Chelsea was absolutely unreal. How many games did Chelsea win 2-0 or 1-0 in those first couple of years under Mourinho largely because of this man's immense understanding with an admittedly great Chelsea defence?

Pepe Reina - For so long up until this season (in which he was not great in all fairness) the best goalie in the Premier League since he arrived. Always been impressed by him from the moment I remember he was so instrumental in knocking Celtic out of the UEFA Cup in 2004. Big things were expected of Celtic after knocking Barcelona out in the previous tie but for Sonny Anderson and Jose Reina to end their journey right there and then! The moment we were in for him in 2005 I always referenced this tie as sign that he was a truly superb goalkeeper!

Edwin Van Der Sar - Fantastic player. Man Utd have filled other positions with ease but once they bought this guy from Fulham there worries were over for a good number of years. He's a big reason as to why Man Utd were so dominant.

Joe Hart - thought he'd be another English media bigged up flop. Hasn't shown to be. Unbelievable season at Man City. Probably since Cech in 2004-2005 a keeper has had as great a season for the champions. Got a big tournament coming up at Euro 2012 but confident he can come out of it even bigger. The best player in England.

Oliver Kahn - Voted best player at the World Cup 2002 with a pretty average German side. Says something about the man.

Manuel Neur - has the makings of another great long time goalkeeper probably playing at the top level for many many years. I think him and Hart have the ability to be the two new power houses in European goalkeeping.

Peter Schmeichel - He was pretty good wasn't he?
