      Wonder Goals
      Mar 31, 2012 12:10:47 pm
Just saw the Peter Crouch goal vs Man City again on Soccer AM. Got me thinking about some of the best I've ever seen.

Off the top of my head, and in order from worst (not exactly the correct terminology) to the best:

      5.
      Ronny Radford
Because the ball was stuck in the mud, a heavy ball mind you, not the balloons they use today.

      4. Wayne Rooney
I know, but still, what a strike (hey, I could have included the volley against Citeh!)

      3. Peter Crouch
Just the technique, and for such a gangly guy as well.

      2. Lionel Messi
      Class

      1. Diego Maradonna
The best, because apart from the obvious skill, it's on the biggest stage in world football.

      Honorary mention

      Steven Gerrard

The occasion, the player, the team.

Obviously there are a lot more, but those stuck out for me.

Given more time, I'm sure there are loads more.

      What's your pick?

      Definitely.

Those two are unbelievable, such technique.

Every time I look at MVB's goal, I think he meant to cross it, but when you see how hard he hits it, it's a shot. And from that angle, it was incredible.

Xabi Alonso 70 Yard amazing goal

To spot the opportunity is one thing, to execute it is another and to get it on target is something else. I know Harper slipped but still .. you need to get it on target from 70 yards.

This is a bit special, scored today by Karim Benzema. It's very similar to Van Basten's goal.

Riise free kick v Man United

If we are on the topic of him then this is THE best driven free kick I have ever seen, besides maybe Robeto Carlos' outside of the foot screamer. I remember Stevie hitting one vs Potsmouth which was amazing but this is out of this world.

      Belter that.

Didn't Brucie come from the Vancouver Whitecaps?

Iceland and Scotland couple of year back.

Sigurdsson who scores the two Iceland goals is playing for Swansea now on loan from Hoffenheim.

His first is a good goal but not in the 'Wonder Goal' league but the Scotland reply straight from the re-start and Sigurdsson's second most certainly are.

      Iceland - Scoland football - 11. october 2010 - goals

      Rob de Wit scores

Most probably won't think that's a wonder goal, but it's such a special one, by such a special player. The player that you all should have known, but probably don't. Rob de Wit. A Dutch Ajax player, a left winger,  who should've become one of the best the Dutch ever had.

Rob de Wit had just turned 21 when he joined Ajax from Utrecht in 1984. He was brilliant in a team with players like Van Basten, Rijkaard and Koeman, managed by Cruijff. That first year at Ajax he got his first call up for the Dutch national team. And he really started to show his quality, becoming important for the national team too, of which that goal is proof. It was a very important goal against Hungary in the qualification run for the World Cup in 1986. They didn't qualify however, but Rob de Wit had it all as a player. Then that summer of 1986 during a vacation Rob de Wit experienced a haemorrhage at the age of 22, and would never play again.

2 years later the Dutch national team won the European Championships in 1988, a team he should and would have been part of. It's so sad to think what could have been.
