      Cartoons / Animes
      May 01, 2012 10:35:02 pm
Apologies if there's a thread about this already, but...

What are / were your favorite cartoons / animes?

I'm not sure about the popularity of animes - Japanese animated series, usually based on mangas - in the UK, but here in Brazil they're really big.

My favorite one growing up was Saint Seiya. They were a big hit here when I was a child, and then it was shown again when I was around 15 or 16 years old - I watched it all over again and realized I loved it irrespective of age. Still today I watch some random episodes from time to time, especially the Hades Saga which is more mature and has less childish elements in the story.

That was the only Japanese cartoon I ever liked, until recently when, due to the influence of a friend, I decided to give a chance to a few others. Right now I'm watching one called Death Note, which is a bit sick and isn't by any means something for young children (which used to be one of my prejudices regarding animes).

Other than that, thinking of my childhood, there were so many great cartoons... I always loved the classics, such as Mickey Mouse (especially Mickey, I should say), Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo... etc ;D

      Now we're talking!  ;D

I'm a big fan of Studio Ghibli films, particularly the ones by Hayao Miyazaki.
My top 5 in order of preference are:

      Spirited Away
      Princess Mononoke
      Howl's Moving Castle
      Grave of the Fireflies
(Dir: Isao Takahata Writ: Akiyuki Nosaka)
      Porco Rosso

My kids also love My Neighbour Totoro.

Studio Ghibli is, in a way, Japan's version of Disney and the films are very very well made. I usually watch them in Japanese with subtitles but most of them are actually dubbed extremely well with characters voiced by some familiar names such as Liam Neesam, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Billy Crystal, and Christan Bale (calm down, racer :p ) so you can watch them with kids too. The themes vary but most Miyazaki stuff is heavily influenced by Japanese culture and mythology so magic and curses are central to most stories. Some, such as Grave of the Fireflies are more serious films and are stories of wartime hardship.

In terms of the more Manga/Sci-Fi stlye animations, I like Ghost in the Shell and 3x3 Eyes (aka Sazan aizu)

I wouldn't say Japanese anime is huge over here, Diego but there's certainly a healthy, cult following.

Finally, if you search Youporn for 'Princess Comes of Age', there's a great film on there with a cracking ending. Best not to watch that particular one with kids though!

      Spirited Away was epic.
      Yet to see Howl's Castle.
Saw Spirited Away in The IFI Cinema.
Glad I did. It was fantastic.

Akira was pretty good. First Sci Fi cartoon I enjoyed.

Thanks for the tips! I think I never watched any of them.

You were talking just about films though, right? What about anime series? There are some who were really famous here during my childhood but I only watched Saint Seiya. I was never too keen on this Japanese stuff and Saint Seiya was the exception. I'm always trying to fight against my prejudices though, as I think a person can lose so much by closing himself to certain things without actually tasting it, and decided to give it a go lately and I'm really enjoying the series I mentioned, Death Note. I always hear great things about Evangelion, too.

Never seen the actual anime, although I knew of them when I saw the live action remakes. Think I've seen a mini series and a movie, but could've been 2 movies. Also seen a spin off movie about L. Loved them all.

Sounds good mate, Death Note doesn't have much action but it's concept is really intriguing and the conflict between the two main characters is amazing, just makes you want to watch one episode after the other

Forgot, first real anime I ever saw was Akira, a classic!

It's so old, but still looks epic!

Very true. A few of my friends (my girlfriend included) now watch Japanese cartoons because I got them into them. Those Studio Ghibli one are kind of 'gateway' films, ones that are easy to appreciate but will raise your interest in watching other anime.

I was talking purely about films, yeah. The main reason is that I was never into cartoon series' all that much except for when I was very young so my memory of them is sketchy. It sounds clichéd now but my favourites as a kid were Transformers, He-Man and Thundercats. I also like Dungeons & Dragons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pole Position, Ren & Stimpy and one about a city of gold that I can't remember the name of.

You mean The Mysterious Cities of Gold?

Used to enjoy Ulysses 31 and watched a fair bit of my mates Manga collection, Urotsukidoji, Ultimate Teacher, Dominion Tank Police, Vampire Hunter D and many others I can't recall.

Really enjoyed the Spiderman & X-Men cartoons as well and as a kid my guilty pleasure was Dogtanian.

DBZ is huge here in Brazil too. DBZ and Saint Seiya were the biggest animes during my childhood, and even today I still get myself into arguments about which one was the best :D I never watched DBZ but I keep saying Saint Seiya was so much better. ;D

One cartoon I absolutely LOVED when I was younger was The Moomins. This was made by Japan but the Moomins is essentially Finnish so it didn't feel like those other Japanese cartoons which I hated ie Pokemon!

      Moomin Opening Theme Song (English)

But few cartoons can beat this one. Always remember watching this and so many other Hannah Barbera cartoons before going to primary school. I always think these days that the late great two time formula one world champion Graham Hill looks like Dick Dastardly!

Looks very well made indeed! But pretty violent too, doesn't look like something for little kids.

These days I've watched the first episode of two animes, one called Serial Experiments Lain and the other is Paranoid Agent. Both look interesting but the first one was very strange - I read on wikipedia that the words "weird" and "bizarre" are used to describe it quite often. Understood very little but I hear it's a great series so I'll try to give it a shot.

True, my girlfriend's little brother isn't that young though, he's 13. But guess that's my age showing. But besides some of the violent action the series isn't as twisted and mature as some other anime is. Think I would've appreciated it at that age, around 12 or so.

Not really a fan of Anime, but.. have to admit, Berserk is one of the greatest things I have ever seen! This is for me, 2nd only to Star Wars 4, 5 & 6.

For anyone who's not into Anime/Cartoon, take a gamble like I did and prepared to be amazed. Don't do any research, just watch it now and be amazed!!

Part 1 - 4 is fan edited, they used the TV series (1990) and movies (2013) to make a more fluid story, much better than watching the film or tv series!

I’m 9 years late to the party but just caught up with clone wars! Awesome show. One of George Lucas best works.
Bit kidified but the character development was interesting.
